The iPhone thread....UPDATED!

Since I didn't want to totally hijack the other thread. I thought I would start its own.

I'm buying one, but I'll probably wait until September. I still have a contract with my Sidekick until the end of September and I can't stand the fact that I would have to pay T-Moblie $30 a month while I would also have to pay AT& T for the data plan for the iPhone. But I am hella excited about getting one!

I just have a cheapo LG right now. I've never had the "cool" phone...ever. I bet it takes me a year to figure it out LOL I really like the internet feature but am unsure how much more that will cost me. We are with AT&T currently and our contract is up in Oct so the rep said we should be able to "get a deal" to stay. Wouldn't take much since we get 25% discount and our whole family uses AT&T so free calls to almost every so we can have the least amount of minutes plan I am afraid of the cost....do you know? I figure upwards of $500????

Well the phone itself is either $499 for 4gb of storage or $599 for 8gb. Obviously if you are an iTunes junkie, there is no decision. You need the 8gb...and what the hell, its only $100 more....lol

I'm guessing the data plans will be between $29-39 a month more.

DH is a cellular technician and works for one of the bigger wireless companies, maybe afore mentioned, maybe not . He said that there is a waiting list for the Iphones, but I have not yet checked it out. I think we get a 30% discount, but I don't know if it applies to the I phones. My DD wants a cell phone really badly and that would kill two birds (mp3 and phone), but it sure is expensive. I don't really like talking on the blackberry so I am not sure I would like the I phone. Someone post when they get theirs to give us the 411 on the thing. Thanks!

after dealing with nightmarish T-mobile for 3 years, I now have a prepaid phone...it keeps me in check (lol)... no overspending or racking out the minutes.

I would love to get a neat phone like the iPhone, but I really don't want to "commit" to another contract (it gives me nightmares) lol.

uh, the data plans are pricey! I've never had one so had no idea. I don't even use my ipod LOL I think it's a 4gb and it's not nearly full but I would probably get the 8 gb just because

the reason I DON'T want one is that you can't just use the ipod part of it. If you don't have a phone plan, or your contract is up, the iphone doesn't work.

Well, knowing Apple products, I personally doubt that there will be anything better in the near future. I don't know an better, easier to use MP3 player than the iPod. But, again....just my opinion.

For me, the iPhone will replace two other devices that I carry now. The Sidekick that I use for texting, AIM and Internet on the go, and my iPod. Not having to carry three things will sell it for me.

I don't think Iphone will have "real" competition....they kind of have the market on this type of product. That said, I was chatting with hubby and he said "only 8gb"? His ipod is 40gb and I found out (dumb me) that my ipod is 20gb so I don't know really how much it will hold. It still sounds fun. I asked a AT&T guy about it today and he said you can't preorder it...you have to order in on the 29th when it comes out. He said HE couldn't even order it before. Suz, you'll have to let us know how fun it is because I have a feeling I'll be on a waiting list come Winter when I'm up for upgrades

This might be a really stupid question.....so excuse me if it is!

When they talk about the data plans, what does that actually allow you to do? surf, email, can you watch tv programs, what?

The $59.99 monthly plan includes 450 minutes of voice time; a $79.99 plan includes 900 minutes; and a $99.99 plan includes 1,350 minutes. All three offer 200 text messages, unlimited data services, minutes that roll over month-to-month and mobile-to-mobile calls. There also is a $36 activation fee.

Data is internet, TV....everything but phone minutes I am assuming

Thanks sexysmurf.....all this talk of these phones is tempting me to start saving for one....Don't tend to spend this kind of money on myself though....so I'm torn.

The data plan and 450 minutes is really only like $20 more than I pay right now and I don't even use all my minutes because most of my family is within network so they don't count Plus, we get 25% off that price so it's not too bad. I am wondering what the insurance is for the phone in case you break it, etc. I normally don't buy the insurance but I would for something that pricey.

Remember when the Motorola Razr first came out a couple years ago? They would not insure them....I bet these will be the same way.

I just read in Newsweek or Time (can't remember which) that the iphone isn't yet internet capable.

I hope that's wrong....lol One of the big draws of the iPhone is that it has Safari built in, like a Mac

I wont be buying one. I have a verizon pocket pc. I get all my emails, can search the web for anything. Its a phonec camera and an MP3 player. So no need to spend 500.00 or more.

• Instant Messaging
• Picture messages (MMS)
• Video recording
• Voice recognition or voice dialing
• Wireless Bluetooth Stereo Streaming (A2DP)
• One-size-fits-all headset jack (May have to buy an adapter for certain headphones)

Stuff we already knew it didn't have

Here's some more info...

Apple - iPhone - Questions and Answers

Apple - iPhone - Tech Specs

Apple - iPhone - Rate Plans for iPhone

I found this interesting from the site: (click on the tab that says "Existing Customers")

If you’re already an AT&T customer and want to keep your current voice plan, you can just add an iPhone Data Plan with unlimited data (email and web) and Visual Voicemail for just $20 per month

That would work for me!
