Return phone calls... What is the expectation??

If you are calling someone at a business, or say your childs teacher or your doctors office, how soon do you expect a return call?
If I call someone and leave them a message, I expect a call within at least 24 hours UNLESS the person is out of town or on vacation. At least a call to say, "Hey I got the message, I am a little tied up but will call you back at such and such time".
Just acknowledge the call I guess.. Nothing irks me more then having to call someone over and over and over...
I have been calling my sons probation officer since June 8th. DAILY... called from my cell phone so there is a log.. FINALLY got a supervisor yesterday who went to his office and got him on the phone. WHen I asked WHY he had not returned oen phone call he said, AND I QUOTE, "I can return a call when I want to. Nothing says it has to be within a certain time frame." ( I was calling because son is being released from detention home this week and there was a discrpency on the release day and they were billing to wrong school district for the classes he took there. I wanted to get it settled so he would get credit for the work he did.)
I was shocked.

Sounds like you got a rude jerk.

I guess there is no hard and fast rule, I expect a call within a 24 hour period.

I expect within 24 hours also. If not, I make a second call, not as nice as the first. The school district I work in has a written policy stating that any communication from a parent must be responded to within 24 hours. Even if the response is just to say that you are researching the problem/request and will get back to them. Of course, this is not possible if it is an email on the weekend. I would expect the same professional responding time from any PROFESSIONAL I am dealing with. If this is not followed through then my estimation of their professionalism begins to waver....

I expect a return call within 24 hours most of the time, but if I'm dealing with an emergency issue that requires quick action, then I expect the phone call withing 12 hours. I have a list of phone calls that I have a to make everyday, and I keep a log, marking date and time, and I do the same thing with phone calls received (not personal), and when I can't back to someday with needed info I still place a call letting them know just that so they know that I am working their issue.....

I think he was extremely rude to you, and you might want to think about reporting that behavior.

Now just a thought here...and with the cavaet that I've never had any interaction with law enforcement in my 48 years whatsoever save for a few speed stops....but any possibility that the probation offficer might be setting his image of who's in charge here? Like I said...just a thought....
