The other day I watched a rerun of " I Love Lucy". You all have maybe seen this episode. Ricky got a part in a movie inCA..so they are leaving NYC to spend a month in Hollywood. The Ricardos decide to buy a car and drive out. By & by the Mertz decide to tag a long.

Ricky asks Fred to pay half the expenses..gasoline especially..Fred balks. He feels he should not have to pay since the Ricardos had planned on going anyway and it wasn't as if they needed the extra gas money.

Ricky said it wasn't fair..Fred said he would not go if he had to pay half.

I feel Fred should pay half. It would lift the burden off Ricky and give them more spending money. It is the right thing to do.

what are your thoughts ?

Okay, to answer the question.....

Fred should have paid half the expense. Afterall, he was only going as a tag along, NOT that he "HAD" to go, nor was it an emergency. If he didn't want to pay, he should've stayed home.

This reminds me of the old sayin.....Your friends are the 1st to take advantage of you financially! THus, keep money/business seperate from your personal life!

Wow, things certainly have changed, haven't they? Now if someone was making a movie, the movie company would have flown them out to CA and paid all expenses!!

Since Ricky already knows that Fred is a cheapskate, for the sake of their friendship he should not insist on Fred paying half for gas. At that time a whole tank of gas was probably under $5 so that makes the story even funnier. I really love I Love Lucy. Its a comedy that stands up to the test of time.

I say Fred should pay half. The gas mileage will be significantly lower with the 2 extra bodies and luggage.

Well, Ricky was already going to go even if Fred didn't so Ricky was going to spend that amount on gas already. What was the difference other than 2 more people were in the car. I think to keep the peace Ricky shouldn't have asked. Maybe Fred should have offered.

Is this going to turn into another debate? LOL LOL

I think that Fred should OFFER to pay part of the time; but the Ricardos would have been going anyway. This way Lucy and Fred have company and someone to help with the driving. Of course, Fred and Ethel should buy some of the meals along the way. BUT, this was I Love Lucy....and the plot lines made Fred be the cheapskate.

Actually, I have heard that the contents of car does affect the gas mileage.

I can't remember the episode but if Ricky asked Fred and Ethyl to come along then Fred should not be under obligigation to pay half the expenses since they were guests of the Ricardos.

Now if Fred and Ethyl asked to go then I think they should pay half. Or at the very least pay their portion of food and lodging.
