my poor kitty cat...

oh gosh, where to start-we fell in love w/ Petey 13 years ago. and he has beem such a wonderful addition to our family-lots of snuggling and purring. Petey was kind enough to allow two more babies to the family, and love them as well. Petey's health has definitely gone downhill over the last few mos. , and over the last few days, he went from not being able to walk on his back legs, to not being able to walk on his front legs either. I called DH this afternoon, and told him he needed to come home to take Petey for a one-way trip to the vet. It was so sad. Two of our boys attended the vet visit and got to say goodbye. Unfortunately, one of the boys mentioned that Petey bit him last night-didn't break skin, didn't leave a mark. Unfortunately, they said it was a state mandated thing, that if an animal bit someone w/i 15 days of being euthanized, then it would have to be turned into animal control. So, we were planning on bringing Petey to be buried beneath the rose bushes-not going to happen. We are told that his body would be "disposed of". Ok, but here's where it hurts-we get a call later on in the eve from our vet-animal control only wants Petey's HEAD. what should they do w/ the rest of his body. WTF????? It's been a bad enough day, then you call us to say that our baby has been decapitated??? DH will be picking up Petey's remains tomorrow, and we will bury him in my parent's yard, next to my childhood dog. I was pretty much ok all day, til we got the call but I can't stop crying now thinking of burying my poor cat w/o his head. I thought we were doing the right thing here, but not so sure anymore....

I can only imagine how hard it would be. I'm assuming that they wanted the head to test for rabies?? But, if you had a regular vet, the vet should have been able to vouch for Petey's vaccination records....

I guess the only bright light in this dark tunnel is that your son will not have to go through the rabies shots.

I don't know, but maybe you could have Petey cremated and then spread his ashes around the rose bush??? I know my best friend had her fur baby cremated when he died of cancer. She keeps his ashes in a place of honor in a nice urn.

I am so sorry for your loss of Petey, we almost had to put one of our cats to sleep this past week thankfully it was only High Blood Pressure and not aHBP and kidney disease.

I have to agree get Petey Cremated, and spread his ashes around the rose bush. My foster mom has cremated all her cats that passed on and put them all in place of honor together in a very nice urn that has a frame on it witha photgraph of all three of the cats that grew up together and are now together in their new lives.

I dont understand if Petey had his vaccines up to date why they would test him? Cats heck most animals when they are sick are gonna nip and bite, my PeTu did last week when I noticed he had blood in his eye and I wanted to be sure it wasnt injured. Sometimes these animal control people make no sense to me and other times they are the most compassionate people on earth.

OH how tramatic. I am so sorry for what you have had to go through. Animal control should have just left it alone and not informed you after the cat had been put down what they had to do. I am so sorry you have to go through this and had to hear such awful news after losing your kitty.

I can understand how awful this is being for you.
My cat of 13 years passed away at home last year.
It was tramatic for me even though it was all natural.
I would hate to have to go through what youare going through!

Wow, I am so sorry you are going through this. I agree with cremation. Losing a loved pet is sometimes harder then losing a loved human. Your family is in my prayers.

I'd totally go the cremation route as otherwise, I would think of the body condition everytime I saw the grave. It would give me nightmares; some people have less sensitivity than a turd and that's not a lot!

Sorry for your loss and maybe you can all do something fun as a family to take your mind off it!

I'm so sorry. I cannot imagine why they would HAVE to decapitate the poor cat. And why would they HAVE to call you and tell you that? That's just awful.
I do know how it feels to have to put down an animal that's become a member of the family.
Hugs!

I lost my cat of 11 years 2 weeks ago. We had him cremated but it is expensive because you have to have him done alone if you want the ashes We did have it done and he is in a nice wooden box that has a plaque on it with his name. It was 180.00. He is sitting on my mantel. I am so sorry for what you went through. by the way my cat weighed 27 pounds. Thats alot of ashes.

I'm so sorry for your loss. We lost one of our cats to a dog 2 weeks ago so we buried her in our flower bed and I got this memorial stone for her and put it on her grave. I cried for days and I still tear up every time I look at her grave.
Collections Etc.: Angelic Memorial and gifts - almost everything $14.99 or less! Nothin' over $20!

Thanks guys for your kind words. It was tough saying goodbye, but the call from the vet was probably the most disturbing phone call I have ever gotten and I could not get that picture out of my mind all night. DH did go pick up Petey yesterday and we buried him in my parents' backyard, next to Stitches the dog. We bought a really pretty yellow rose bush and put it on his grave. The boys were happy to do that for him-we of course did not mention what happened to them. There is comfort in that they can visit him and remember him.

I, too, am so sorry that this has happened! I was married for 23 years, and my ex-husband didn't like cats...so we didn't have any. As soon as I divorced, I bought a Ford Mustang and got a cat!!!! I love Bell (who is really a boy. The lady said he was a female...not long afterwards, as he matured, David was rubbing his stomach and said, "Uh, oh. Bell has balls!" Now, we call him the Bell Boy! ) It's so nice having a cat around and I can't imagine losing him. I am so very, very sorry. Yes, have him cremated, and put the ashes in one of his favorite spots.

That's such a horrible thing to have to hear about. A cat who lives at a hobby store was gently nibbling my hand yesterday, and I'd never guess it could be considered such a big deal. I wish you comfort, because I know losing a kitty you loved is really tough.
