New Car or Used Car?

When you are in need or a new (to you) vehicle, do you purchase new or used???

We usually purchase new. We don't want to get someone else's headache. We did buy DH a used Toyota, tho, since we feel very confident in their quality. Two years so far, and no problems

Some people refuse to buy new, stating cars depreciate so much. How 'bout you??? New or Used?

I used to be a new car only girl. But once I actually bought used and had no car payments and few problems, then I'm for used. I do love new cars though, especially the smell, LOL. But I hate the payments more. I guess if I had cash to pay for a car and had no payments, then I may go with a new car. The depreciation is terrible with a new car.
My soon to be ex bought a new Ford Excursion for almost $40,000 in 2001 and now it's worth about $14,000. Disgusting! On the other hand, I had a new Honda Accord EX, totalled in a wreck after having it for 1 year and I made $5,000 on the car. So I guess they all depreciate but some cars hold value better than others. I think it also depends on how good of a deal you got on the car in the beginning. JMO though!

I always purchase used with high miles & usually have no problems I am 30yrs old & never had a car loan I love it just like that. I believe cars are no investment they depreciate to fast in value.

I will buy certain brands used (Toyota, Honda) but both are extremely hard to find as they generally last forever... which I know is a generalization. LOL

Edited to say that we bought a new Toyota Rav4 in 2006. It was totaled (not our fault) 6 months/6,000 miles later and insurance paid for a new 2007 model. The value of the 2006 had actually gone UP!!!! Lesson learned.

We have never bought a new car. We buy our cars when they are about 2 years old and coming off a lease. We have never (knock on wood) had a problem. I just hate the thought of buying that car and the second you drive it off the lot you owe more than it is worth.

We had the best shopping experience the last time that we bought a car. We bought it at car max. They have every brand and type of car so you can drive a bunch without leaving. They are not pushy at all and they gave us a really good price.

HTH,
Darlene

We only bought new for years and our last 2 have been used. We've had no problems with either and probably will stick to used from now on. BTW, one's an Acura and one's a Chevy Tahoe.

I always buy a used Subaru station wagon with low mileage and then drive it until I'm ready for a new used Subaru station wagon. I love these cars! I've had no problems with my Subaru system so far. When I'm finished with a car, I donate it to a charity.

I bought a used 2003 Honda Pilot in 2004 and LOVE it. I wanted a Pilot and it was a price I couldn't pass up the deal I got. I will have it until it dies and then I will cry.

We usually buy a very good brand that is a past lease or has very low miles. I agree with the deprecation and if you total it it would be hard.

Well Dh has a '67 mustang that we bought used........Our family cars were always new, till our last one, I had always loved the Armada, but the original.....so I didn't know it buy DH had put us a waiting list at our local Nissan dealer to get one.....got it about a year ago...love it, and right now booking at exactly what we paid a year ago......I think we'll probably stick to newer used cars, I think they are a better value.

I bought quite a few different cars over the almost 20 years that I had a flower shop. I put lots of miles on all of them and drove them until they could no longer be repaired. I calculated that I got more miles for less money with the new cars. They were value priced cars, though, not luxury models. DH buys very cheap old cars and has had good luck with that. IMHO, the only really bad deal is a higher mileage, used car that you need to take out a loan to buy.

For the most part, we always buy new, mostly because we can. But we keep our cars for at least 5 years. We are a Honda / Acrua family now and it is amazing how those brands (and Toyota / Lexus too) hold their value. We are getting ready to sell my 5 1/2 year old Odyssey mini van and will probably get around $12,000 for it, which I find amazing. I'm used to getting $1000 - $2000 for a 5 year old used car.
