This is GROSS I know..but whatever! (Help!!)

OK so apparently have some "scalp issues". My scalp gets a very thick layer of "dandruff" or whatever it is, in certain spots. Since I pick at it, it gets little "scabs" sometimes, so whenever I touch my head I notice it, and start picking at it. I can 'dig' (I wouldn't really call it digging though) into it, and pick a chunk of it off, which also comes with a lot of hair. It's not really oily, or greasy though. I don't get a lot of actualy dandruff, like it has moisture to it enough not to be drying up and flaking off all over the place. Like I said it's only in a few select places, and gets worse with moisture..like if I take a shower and go to bed with wet hair, it will get even thicker and itchy. I confided in a friend at work, and she thought it might be some sort of medical condition. Anyone know Is it just a case of dandruff, or something else?? I know this is so gross, sorry!!

My son has this also and I have asked every doctor about it and they just don't know, they always say dandruff, but my other two kids don't get it.

I know exactly what you are talking about and it is hard to describe and I have never found a way to get rid of it, except picking it off his head and he hates that. My son is 9 now and he has had it from birth.

Maybe someone can help us with this problem . . . .

I have looked into this so many times. and I want to warn you because my MIL drives me nuts with picking her head. This can become a habit and she cannot stop. She has scratch till she has a silver dollar sized bald spot. And she keeps picking at it. As soon as it scabs over she picks it off again. I know it's just a habit.

If I were you I would go see a dermatolgiist and just find out. KWIM

I looked on WEBMD and it sounds like it may be seborrheic dermatitis...I think that you should see a doctor and maybe they can give you some type of cream or special shampoo to help clear it up...I've never had it, but I can feel for you. I'd probably be doing the same thing...picking at it. Stuff like that drives me crazy and I wouldn't be able to stop. Good luck and I hope it clears up for you. ~Lisa

In addition you can have a deep build up caused by conditioners. Sally's has tons of stuff that can help vs. doctor's office. best of Luck

I have psoriasis on my scalp (and other areas on my body) and you described my scalp to a T. It is possible to have psoriasis contained to the scalp only but you should get a diagnosis from your Dr. I have never had any luck with the prescriptions I have been given and have learnt to live (and dress) accordingly. There are times when my psoriasis is much worse and times when it is almost difficult to find.

See a Dr and maybe some of the treatment options will work for you. Good luck!!

I use that blue medicated shampoo - Selsun Blue - I think the menthol is very soothing on those spots on my head. But I have to warn you - you need to use a SERIOUS conditioner afterwards, because the shampoo does a number on stripping your hair of oils.

My condition has been ongoing for years - I have spoken to my doctor, and they just recommend tar based shampoos like T-Gel. I prefer mentholated shampoos, I just think it's more soothing on the sore spots, and it works about the same as the T-Gel (neutrogena).

Good luck!

hi
mix equal parts of olive oil and white vinegar, apply to the areas affected with cotton ball 30 minutes befor bathing.
when my sister was 4-5 years old, she had this rash and redness with skin peeling behind her ears, and the doctor told my mom to try that. i love that doctor, he always gave these remedies (for non serious conditions)before writting a prescription. that was overseas in Jordan, and no he is not a witch doctor
by the way that helped my sister's condition.

Thank you all for your help! I've also looked at Psoriasis but most places I read that explained it listed it also as being a skin condition on other parts of the body which i don't have. I really hate to go to the drs, but it sounds like that is what I should do before I start doing otherwise. Also I never use conditioners, becuase I know it seems to make this even worse. I've been using head & shoulders but that doesn't help at all and leaves me hair really tough.

hey

I am a licensed cosmetologist and there is actually a couple diagnosis's you could have, but without actually seeing it, it is hard to tell. There is a variety of types of dermatitis, dandruff, etc. BUT from what you have described, it does not sound like typical dandruff.

HOWEVER, I do second this suggestion. Do it for about 4 days, and if after 4 days you do not see a difference, then post back and I will suggest another option. I also suggest rinsing in COOL water. FYI: The vinegar will replenish the NATURAL pH in the scalp and the olive oil helps the vinegar penetrate more effectively. .

Shampoo's may be an option, but the 'hair' doesn't seem to be the problem. Your problem is more of a scalp condition. Again, try the above for 4 days and let me / us know how it is going. If needed, I will give you some other options that should work.

HTH!

To me the best thing you can do is go to the Dr. and have them look at it.....if you try a lot of things when you don't know exactly what it is you run the risk of making it worse and not better.......JMO
