Have you ever washed your hubby's ties?

My husband just started an administrative job with Sheriff's Dept and has to dress with shirt and ties everyday. Well I went out and bought him a bunch of dress clothes at Kohls. I found some ties on clearance for $5 and the others were $25. Today I went to the 50% off sale at Goodwill and bought him 13 ties(99˘ each). They all look nice but it just sort of grosses me out to wear used things before washing them so I started reading labels--DRY CLEAN ONLY. Does this really mean "only"? Has anybody tried washing ties in Woolite or Dryell? Any advice would be so appreciated....

I've washed a couple, they really don't come out that great, maybe they were just cheap ties. He has a couple fairly expensive ones that he did take to a dry cleaner but it was pretty cheap! I think $1?? Might want to call and ask, that's cheaper than the hassle of washing and making them look nice after, to me

My son has to wear a tie to high school everyday for the past three years (one more year!!) and to work for the last year. Needless to say, we go through a lot of ties. I have never washed them, it just doesn't seem like they would maintain their shape. So that doesn't answer your question....but I would recommend that you try TJMaxx and Marshalls for lower prices on nice ties. I get all of J's there for no more than $10 each and usually $3-7. when marked down . They have all the big names. At $3, they get thrown away when they wear out or get dirty.

DH wears a shirt and tie to work everyday. Once one of his ties snuck into the wash and it completely ruined it--this was a $50 tie! so I was a little upset but I was consoled in the fact that I had gotten it on clearance at JC Penney's for $11. It was a nice tie though and he had only worn it a few times and the cheapskate in me tried everything to try and fix it but in the end we just had to throw it away. I would vote for the drycleaners or maybe just iron them on the hottest setting you can without scorching them to kill whatever germs may be in there.

Yes, I have, and yes, they mean it when they say "Dry clean only"! After washing it you can do nothing but throw it away!

Talking Here's what I do

**1st remember that warm or hot water WILL cause them to lose their shape.

Here's what I do:
I fill the sink with cool water and woolite. Let them soak for a few minutes and use my hand to swirl them around. Then I rinse with cold water, but dont ring them. Gently press on them while lying flat against the surface of the sink. (helps to maintain the shape). Then I lay a towel on the countertop and place them on the towel, then lay another towel over top and mash them, trying to get the excess water out. Remove the top towel and air dry. Iron AFTER they are thoroughly dry.

I have always been too tight to take ties to the dry cleaner and have did this for years, I have a hubby and two boys so I have did this for quite a few ties, lol.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for all the replies. I am going to call dry cleaners in the morning to find out how much he charges for ties. He gives hubby a discount since he is law enforcement so hopefully it won't be to expensive.
