Suggestions for health insurance for individuals?

My (almost) 22 yr old son was dropped from our medical coverage when he dropped out of school briefly in 11/06. He began taking part time classes last month and will be going full time again come fall. He did not get Cobra because he could not afford the premiums while he was out of work (he had fractured his hand).

For school, he will be required to have coverage, and although it is available w/the school, I was wonder what some of you might be doing for yourselves or someone you know. I'm looking into what options are out there. My son can be reinstated w/our insurance if he can pay retrovactive with Cobra. I can't see being able to do this.

Any ideas?

TIA!

When my dd graduated in Dec. of 2006, I knew that she would be dropped from my insurance. She started a job the next day after graduation but they would not cover her for the first 2 months. We called State Farm and they had a temporary insurance. I mainly wanted it in case she landed in the hospital. My family seems to be there alot. When she got covered, they said they could not cover preexiting conditions for 9 months unless she had continuous coverage. Good thing she bought the 2 months because that counted. Health insurance is in my opinion the one insurance to have (besides car insurance). One illness or hospitalization can wipe you out. Two years ago my dh had over $100,000 in medical bills. The following year it was about $50,000. Two diffferent illnesses in two years.

I agree. I've had Rheumatoid Arthritis for 18 years now and have had to had a lot of medical care due to it. That is why I am concerned for my son right now.

It looks like State Farm has a marketing relationship with Assurant Health, whom I've been investigating as a possible choice.

Thanks for sharing!

My girls and I have coverage through Humana. We're very happy with it and have had it for about 2 years, at least. It is going up at renewal which is august 1st. It's going from $270 to $310. That's for family coverage though.
Also, when I was looking for insurance, this is what I found to be better.... I actually used an agent because for whatever reasons, he got a much cheaper rate. I had requested info online and received a call from this agent. I wanted to make sure I wasn't paying some huge fee for his services so I called and got the rate straight from Humana and it was much higher. Just a thought! I have no idea why this is the case but whatever provides me better rates, lol.
