Question Where are you from and what is your region famous for?

I apologize if we've already done this here....sometimes I confuse the various boards I visit.

I just wrote something that got me to wondering....where are you all from and what is your city/town or region famous for i.e. important people, historical events, foods, etc?

My town in particular is famous for their bars..LOL seriously, when I say I live in Greenwood Lake, EVERYONE in the Northern New Jersey area, that is older says I used to go there to drink back in the day..cause then NJ drinking age was 21 and NY was still 18 so everyone used to hang out up here.

I am currently living in the city (and will probably live in this city forever) known as the "Birthplace of Grunge," because it was the hometown of the founding members of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic.

Prescott, Arizona

Many western (and other?) movies made in this area.
Arizona's mile high city -- 5800 ft altitude.
Arizona's territorial capital -- before statehood in 1914.
Arizona's 'Christmas' city.
100,000 people inhabited the Prescott area more than 9,000 years ago -- probably Yavapai Indian tribe.
Beautiful old Victorian homes, shaded green grounds around the Courthouse Square... everybody's hometown.
I've heard that Tom Selleck lives here... but haven't met him personally!

Prescott reminds me of Mayberry -- ala Andy Griffith Show!!!

The region I live in is currently known for an extrememly high crime rate, blue tarps, and FEMA trailers. BUT...it should be remembered for great food, beautiful architecture, incredible jazz and blues, caring and compassionate people, moss-covered oaks, Mardi Gras, barbequed shrimp, Lake Ponchatrain, etc...I could go on, and on, and on. :-)

Silver Spring, Maryland. Next door to Washington, DC. Goldie Howin (spelling) when to high school here. The Carroll family (Daniel signed the Declaration of Independence and cousin Charles signed the Constitution) lived about a mile from me. I am sure many colonial and historical people lived in the area since it is so close to DC.

Oh, I forgot the famous snipers from a few years ago.

Hey dauvil, I taught a girl a few years ago who was related to Francis Scott Key.

Portland, Oregon. Lots of rain which we refer to as liquid sunshine. No one famous from here with the exception of Bruce Springsteen's first wife who lived near Portland in one of the "posher" burbs. Rumor also is that Clark Gable worked at a department store in Portland during the early 20's before he became famous. Oh, and for those who watch Little People on TLC they live to the west of Portland and the show frequently has views of the city.

I am not sure how many generations down she was from FSK. Her last name was Key and I jokingly said something about being related to FSK to her. Then she said she was related. Also my kids went to school with some boys related to Daniel Boone. If you look in the front section of the Washington Post, there is an ad for Boone and Son Jewelers. That is the family.

The snipers made it hard for everyone. Several of the shootings were around my house. They were working out at a YMCA about a 1/2 mile from my school. One day I came to school early (my husband walked me in) and we noticed a car with two men parked on the school grounds behind some trees. We called the police. It turned out that they were undercover police in the car watching my school and the high school across the street. I was glad when they got the two guys.

I'm in eastern pa (near allentown and 10 min from NJ) and we are known for
The Andretti racing team (Mario, Michael, Marco...they live a mile or 2 away from me)
Larry Holmes (former boxer)
Just born candies (mike and ikes, peeps, etc)...and they are about to go on strike!
Binney & Smith (Crayola stuff is made in Easton pa)

And in August there's a yearly music festival called Musikfest. Over a million people visit every year for the 10 day event. Started in 1984 and has grown enormously since. People from all over the world attend, and hundreds of performances...really lots of fun!

Ahhhhh! So many places y'all have already listed are places I have lived for years and loved to live in.
E.PA (both in the Allentown area and in the Poconos for us)
We were famous for all the previous mentioned things as well as anthracite coal (which made us able to heat a 2400 sf home and heat H20 for less than $700/year!)
I currently live in the TC area of MN which is knowm for many things:
cheese curds
Renaisance Festival
More theatres than anywhere else in the U.S. outside of NYC (also a past home for moi-self)
And of course, our extremes in weather:
brutally hot and humid summers, and equally brutally cold and long winters.

We are famous for the Valentine remailing program at Valentine's Day. You can send in your card so it gets the LOVELAND postmark. It's a pretty big thing. We also have a LOT of bronze artists in our town and adjoining towns so we have a big art festival in August. We recently had a sculture called The Triangle make national attention. It was all pretty funny and also pretty sad. It was a nude sculpture and too many people think nudes are nasty and dirty....so sad I was watching "Best Week Ever" on VH1 and there it was...I laughed out loud for sure that we made VH1 headlines

I'm originally from the Frankenmuth MI area, a small Bavarian town. There is a Christmas store there called Bronner's and they claim to be the largest store of it's kind in the world. I have seen signs all over the US for it and it always surprises me!

The town I live in now....the only thing I can think of is that the man who wrote "Paul Bunyon" wrote it for our local paper, or at our paper...something like that anyway!! lol There is a huge statue of Paul and Babe in the middle of town.

Nobody famous from either as far as I know...................no wait a minute.......

If you remember Question Mark and the Mysterians (sp) they had one hit called 96 Tears in the 60's, well the lead singer grew up just about a mile from where grew up. That's it.......

Per my search I found:

"Loveland is perhaps best known nationwide as the home of the Valentine Re-Mailing Program. Every year, hundreds of thousands of Valentines are packaged inside larger envelopes and sent to Loveland, where volunteers hand-stamp them with a Valentine's verse and send them on to the intended recipients. Each year a contest is held through the local newspaper, the Reporter Herald, for residents to submit their verses.

Leading up to Valentine's Day, the city authorizes the placement of red hearts with sponsored personal messages on light poles and other fixtures of the downtown streets.

Mail your cards in a larger envelope to

Postmaster
Attention: Valentines
Loveland, CO 80538-9998"

hope that helps
