My DH is supposed to be researching this. If he wants to do it, he's in charge of coming up with some info. I don't want to push him into it but did tell him that we have the $$$ if he wants to do it. He's hit the 45... bifocal or not age. |

I had it done January of this year. I am so happy about it. Waking up in the morning and being able to see the alarm clock is just wonderful! I tell people it feels like a miracle that I can see. I got home after the procedure and went to bed. I woke up the next morning and could already see 20/25 after I had my follow-up appt. I was 20/400 and now I can see 20/15. I paid just under $4000 for the procedure. I would recommend looking into Flex Spend to help budget for it if your employer offers it. |

My husband had his done a few years back by one of the doctors that participated in development of one of the technologies for the surgery. He paid around $3000 and he thinks it's worth every penny. He went from not being able to see 5 feet in front of himself, to BETTER than 20/20 vision. I'm sure this is one of those things that the results depend on the person - and he was tested twice for compatibility with the surgery - but he's so glad he had it done.

I so wish I could have it done. I was told by my optometrist that no reputable doctor would touch me because I'm basically blind in my left eye because of uncorrected "lazy eye" when I was small. If anything bad happened to my right eye I would be screwed.

I work for an eye dr who does this surgery. LASIK or PRK helps to correct far vision. The procedures have been around for years, are relatively safe and they do work. All surgeries carry some degree of risk and LASIK/PRK does as well. CK helps to correct close up or reading vision. CK does not seem to work as well as LASIK and definetly does not last. CK must be redone every year or two. As far as cost, the average cost for LASIK is about 2000.00 per eye. Those coupons for 400.00 or BOGO that you see, read the fine print. In some cases, the amount of correction determines the cost and the 400.00 is a starting point. Ask if the appointments and tests before surgery are included in the price and also the aftercare. Most of the lower prices do not include pre and post visits. Ask if the RX eye drops are included or if you must purchase those separately. Lastly, go to an eye surgeon you know, one who has practiced in your area for some time. The number of the surgeries he has done (experience) is much more important than the $$$.

SIL told me that since she has bifocals, they basically correct one eye for distance and the other eye for up close... She's been checking into this as well. Anyone ever heard of this? Snow, that is some great advice! Thanks! I do want for him to have a good experience and money is not nearly as important to us as having a good experience. He only has one set of eyes!

Yes, some people can tolerate having one eye for far and one eye for close. You should really try contact lenses this way to see if it works for you. Also, you need to be tested to determine your prominant eye. That will be the eye to be corrected for close . Most people can not adjust to the one eye for close, one eye for far. I can't stress enough to try it with contact lenses first. Many people get so dizzy and naseaus they can not even leave the exam room with the contacts in. Also remember, the correction on the close eye does not last and has to be redone every year or so. I personally would go with LASIK for far and wear reading glasses when needed.

I too was legally blind before I had it done. I could NOT see with glasses at all and contacts weren't much better. I had it 3.5 years ago and they thought I would still need contacts/glasses afterwards because my case was so severe. I had perfect vision for 2 years and then it started going downhill a bit (which was expected). My cornea's are too thin to "touch it up" so I wear contacts again but at least I can see without them instead of feeling for walls LOL Mine cost $5K in Denver. I used one of the more pricey docs BUT he came HIGHLY recomended by people I knew who had him do their eyes. I would never pick the cheapest person for my eyes

It's the greatest thing since the internet, I tell ya. I had it done 4 years ago for $1295/eye. That price included 12 months warranty, which meant that any touch up correction would be covered. I was 20/375 and the morning after, I was 20/25 and within a month, I was 20/15 and am still. My husband has always had perfect vision which I always marvelled at while putting on my contacts all those years. Now, he's amazed at how well I see and how far I can see. It's wonderful thing. I can now see blades of grass when I look out at my lawn! Literally 7 seconds of laser per eye has changed my life so much. I'm so happy I did it. The only thing for me back then was the RX eyedrops were $60.xx with insurance and they tasted horrible (they go down your tear ducts to your throat). I had a few problems with the tear duct plugs coming out, but they just put new ones in a couple of times. Other than that, I was funny to sleep in protective eye wear and hard to resist rubbing my eyes sometimes. The only thing I have noticed since is light sensitivity.... only because my vision is so crisp and clear. I just wear sunglasses when it's bright out.... even under stadium lights. |
