July 4th - Floating holiday - ever heard of this?

DH just started a new job last week - HURRAY for that!!!! He is working in the marketing dept for a major home improvement store at their corp HQ. He told me yesterday he found out that July 4th is considered a floating holiday (although in his benefits package it's listed as a paid holiday - they have 6 throughout the year). He wants to work tomorrow and take his floating holiday at Christmas.

Has anyone ever heard of this? I thought July 4th is a federal (required day off) holiday and didn't dream that he wouldn't get it off. And why would it be listed as a paid holiday? (He does get paid for it, even though it floats - right?) Hmm...

We didn't have any special plans, I just wondered if anyone here has ever heard of that before.

TIA,
Suzanne

yep ... all our holidays are floating holidays.

you might get paid for them but you might have to work them too.

The way it works for us is, dh gets 10 floating holidays a year....he picks out the 10 holidays he wants time off for...the remaining holidays are either no pay/no work or work/pay.

Just because it is a Federal holiday, doesnt mean that would have that time off in the private sector...unless he is a federal employee?

This is how our floating holidays work. If you normally work on the day of the holiday then it is not a floating holiday but a regular holiday and you get it off. If it is normally your day off it becomes a floating holiday and you can pick another day to have off with pay. It started because most people worked Mon-Friday, but some of us worked on Sat. We got lets say 8 legal holidays a year. Since the 4th fell on a Sat. and most people didn't work that day they gave everyone off another day like the day after Thanksgiving. But those of us that worked on Sat. had to work that day and not get any holiday pay. The next year they started floating holidays. My dh usually works on Wed. and signed up to work the 4th. He will get paid his normal pay plus holiday double time. If a holiday falls on his day off and he signs up to work it he just gets the holiday double time. I'm not sure if I even understand what I just said. LOL

Where DH works now Christmas and Thanksgiving are set holidays. The other 10 holidays they are paid for are floating. He can use them whenever he wants and can use them with his vacation days.

Hmm.. very interesting! Without sounding ignorant , I just assumed that all places of business (except retail, hospitals, police, etc) would be closed on "major" holidays - New Year's, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Those are the ones listed in his benefits book.

Thanks for everyone's input! I learned alot.

July 4th is a company holiday for us; not a floater. All offices are officially closed but that doesn't mean there won't be a few people in working (depending on their job). Of course, security is always here, but it's contracted. We are not government; we are a Fortune 500 company.

I work in the public library. We have those set holidays too. Election Day and Lincoln's birthday are both considered floating. We're open. If you want to work then, you take them as floating, whenever you want them, staff coverage permitting.

Where I work we have floating holidays and we are allowed to use them as a paid day off of our choosing. However they don't roll over from year to year. They must be used by the end of the calendar year. Also they will not be paid in case of termination or layoff as paid vacation would be. So I always use up my holidays before vacation days.

Your husbands best bet is to talk to someone in benefits as to what the "Rules" are, plus it's always good to make a friend in the benefits office as they are a wealth of knowledge to your rights.

His business will probably be closed for those holidays. My dh's company is closed on those days but it is a cable TV company so they do have a few people that work overtime in case there is an outage. On most holidays the employees fight to get overtime because they are paid double time for it.
