Clothing for teens

Ever since Nicole, my 14 yr old daughter, made the leap out of the kid's section, we have had a hard time finding appropriate clothes for her. One, she's leggy, and she has a long torso. Two, all the tops are V necks, and too low for her. Three, all the skirts these days are too short! Luckily, Bermuda shorts are in right now, so we've been ok on those.

Well, I finally found a store we can both agree on. Steve and Barry's. They have a new line by Sarah Jessica Parker called Bitten, and I love it!! We started school shopping today-- and I got her 4 pair of jeans and capris ($11 each!), and 2 pair of shorts ($9.99 each), and 6 shirts (They were 2 for $7). I love it!!

Where do you shop for your teen??

Holly

Haynes, I know where you are coming from. It is so difficult to find conservative clothing for teen girls. I tend to take my DD to Goody's.

I liked them in the past, but they closed ours!! I've had good luck at Penneys, too.

I haven't been to our Penney's lately cuz I boycott them because of how sleazy or shear their Junior's clothing is.

My three teens are very skinny and leggy. They all love Abercrombie and their closets are full of the stuff. Also throw in Hollister (same company) and that makes up about 98% of their clothing.

Really? I haven't seen any too bad at ours-- although we mainly shop the Arizona line.

There's no one store that I believe to actually be better than another. All of them have the v neck, scoop neck, totally inappropriate necklines IMHO. You just have to look and look and look until you find what you deem appropriate for your DD. My DD is 14 and she is (has been taught) very modest. She will not wear the plunging necklines.
We do not even buy shorts that can't be worn to school. School shorts have to be at least finger tip length and it's better if they're close to knee length. Lots of the shorts I see the young girls wearing are barely long enough to cover their rearends.

We took my niece swimming at the pool the other day. I was looking at the shorts that my niece had left by us when she went in to swim and they are so short -- barely cover anything! I told my SIL that I am thankful that I don't have to deal with raising girls... boy howdy. Boys have their own set of issues but I can't imagine going through what you all are.

My daughter wears the shirts but always wears an undershirt with it. Sometimes the undershirts are even too low so she will cut out the bra in them so they can be pulled up to be a bit less revealing. Attending a Bible college and now working for a church, she's learned some pretty neat tricks to remain as modest as possible, but yet be fashionable.

Check out downeastbasics.com... It's LONG shirts that are really cute. They also have shorts, skirts... They are just modest clothes... Key, though, buy one size bigger.

Not the clothes in our JC Penneys...it's very nice. I bought my daughter some really cute shirts in there tonight...some with flowers, hearts, unicorns, and rainbows...a rounded neck...not tight or low-cut. Very tame and adorable. I love shopping at JC Penneys! ~Lisa

We live on an island in Alaska and let's just say we have very minimum shopping for anything. 99% of the stuff she needs we have to order online and pray that it fits without having to send it back to get something else.

We loved Steve & Barry's when we were living in Buffalo, NY. I wish they did online orders, oh well, someday we'll move back to the real world of shopping. LOL!

Steve and Barrys is really fun. My best friend has 8 daughters. They are very conservative. I know they wear a lot of leggings from Old Navy with some of the skirts, They are also very good at layering so they do wear some of those vneck shirts with another top underneath. And when it's cooler, they add a denim short jacket. For prom they sometimes add things to their dresses. One had a beautiful blue dress but it was low cut so they found some matching silver trim and just added it to the v part. It looked like it was made that way. They add straps to the dresses also if they are stapless. They are alwaays dressed very fashionable but very conservative. They look adorable.

8 daughters???? Oh my word--- there's not enough money in all the world to make me want 8 kids, much less 8 daughters!!! LOL Good grief-- I need to add that woman to my prayer list!!

I noticed a Steve & Barry's at the mall nearest us but have never gone in. What size does their clothing start at? I have a 9 year old daughter but she is tall (I'm 5'11 & DH is 6'5) and is wearing girls size 14 in pants (sometimes a little big but the 12's are too small) and 10/12 or 12 in shirts.
The poor kid inherited our feet, too...she's already in a size 8.5 womens.

Ours has baby, kids, women's and men's. Think about Old Navy-- kinda like that, only with MUCH better prices!!

I bought a few items last year from Steve & Barry's and they shrunk horribly.......a size 14/16 barely fit my 6 year old......

Have you had any problems with shrinking on any of the items you bought? I would love to try going there again because I love their prices, but need clothes that don't shrink a gazillion sizes.

My oldest DD can agree on some clothes at Old Navy, Sears and sometimes the Gap (sale or clearance)

No, not yet. Most of the pieces we bought were from the SJP line Bitten. Maybe because that's a different line? I don't know.

My daughter is 14 too. We have had good luck at Mervyns. Im not sure if you have a Mervyns local to you. It seems like we just have to look at the different places to find appropriate things.

Our Pennys isn't bad. I think maybe they all have different buyers. I also check Kohls and old navy.

Good luck.

We do most of the clothes shopping for DD at JCP, and, they do have many low cut things in the junior dept. I make DD wear a tank top under it, or a sheer shirt over it.

Crocheted cardigans cover bare shoulders with summer dresses, and heavier ones work well in the winter, as do little ponchos. Opaque tights last forever, and make skirts a bit less revealing, too. I don't have kids, or know where to shop for them, but those are the things I did to make my outfits a bit less tarty ten years ago.

My 14yo daughter and I have a trip planned today to Steve & Barry's just to look for some Bitten wear for back to school (and for me!).

I came here to see if there were any reviews before we left. Glad to see you like the line. I can't wait to see what our "local" (45 minutes away) store has!

Other than that, my daughter really just likes t-shirts and the stretch Levi's (around $20). She likes the cute t-shirts with logos and sayings, and of course Old Navy, AE, etc - which we always get on sale. If you have a Value City nearby, they have AE stuff cheapcheapcheap! I'm so glad she's modest and doesn't like the "hoochie"wear that so many designers put out for our young girls these days. She accessorizes a lot with jewelry to get her girly on.

I watched SJP on some talk show promoting her line.......it seems like a really cute line. She said something along the lines of....this is not high fashion, its not going to last you forever, its good for what its for....to cover your kids or you at a affordable price and still getting a really great style.

I have seen the bitten line and I think its really cute! I have the hardest time finding my oldest DD clothes b/c like her mom she has developed very early and at 10 is wearing a 34 a cup! Yikes! So we are super careful about what we buy. We also have DH take a look at everything before she walks out of the house!! You can't be to careful with all the perverts in this world!!!

My girls do layers - they wear a tank top or camisole under those low necked shirts.

Our schools are pretty strict about the dress code - no sleeveless shirts, no midriff visible, no shorts, no short skirts...

My 13 yo eighth grader has great luck at Kohls. We also have some luck at Abercrombie, Hollister, Old Navy, Wet Seal & Penneys. She does a lot of the layering, too.

My daughter has several shirts that are woo low cut for a busty 13 year old, so she wears tank tops under them. She has several in different colors & they seem to work well for her.
