Horrible story about a 6 yr old girl in a swimming pool

Pool drain rips out part of girl’s intestinal tract - Kids & Parenting - MSNBC.com

OMG . My mom insisted on telling me about this story when we spoke on the phone before. (Doesn't she know I think of enough things ON MY OWN to worry and stress about????!? )

Is this something new I have to obsess over? Is this a common danger in our neighborhood pool? We don't have our own pool and I don't know enough about pools to know if this is something to worry over. Please either put my fears to rest or else tell me to be extra vigilant (which I already am, believe me!!!).

BTW - I have a 12 yr old and 7 yr old twins.

Oh my goodness!!! How horrible!! That poor girl!!

PS_- Did you see it said " North Carolina, for instance, requires pools to have dual drains to diffuse the force of the suction and prevent children from being trapped."

Oh my dear God that is absolutely horrible. I've never heard of such a thing before.

Thanks for posting this. We have a pool and my kids and neighbor kids are always over and in it. They also spend a lot of time at the local water park. Now I can warn them even though they are older they sometimes do dumb things without thinking.

Whew, OK, thanks haynes94 for saying this. Does that mean, then, that such a thing could *not* happen in our state?

My mom has told me stories about pool drains before, but usually (even worse), the outcome is that the kid drowned because of incredible suction from a drain.

I did NOT tell her that GOING SWIMMING TOMORROW in our neighborhood pool is/was my plan for the day! Should I rethink this????!

It's no wonder I'm a nervous wreck most of the time, hearing about stuff like this does NOT help!

That is one reason I am glad that we don't have a pool with a drain like that. We have a INTEX 16 foot. The filter drains are on the side of the pool with not enough suction to hurt the june beetles out now...

I feel so sorry for this little girl, But the outcome could have been a lot worse, she could be dead.....

Dual drains are a great idea but not required to be retro fitted in GA. I did some major pool repairs to one of our pools and while having that work done paid the additional couple of thousand and had the dual drain put in. However, my second pool does not have a dual drain - just a vortex drain cover that gets ripped off by vandals regularly.

This is a very, very sad story and I hope the little girl recovers quickly.

My mother told me that this could happen and I still can't believe it. This story is so horrible and sad. I couldn't even get through the entire article. It's just so sad. Sending prayers the families way.

I am amazed that any pool owner would not have the drain protected after all the publicity these horrible accidents have received over the last 10+ years. My kids are all in their 20's and I knew about the dangers when they were little.

IMO - these accidents are no longer "freak" and are nothing short of negligence on the part of the pool owner now.

Such a sad and totally preventable thing to happen to that poor child.

I believe, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, that this occurred at a municipal pool. Which would mean that the city would (and should) be held liable and accountable for the negligence of not keeping the pool safe.

I, honestly, though when I read the headline on another board that this was going to be one of those "warning" emails that had gotten circulated and didn't really happend. My God, I cannot imagine that happening to a child and her not even crying or screaming! So strange and sad!

I heard this on the news last night. We go to the pool on the Navy base several times a week. Im going to have to go and check where all the drains are and have the boys avoid them. Like I need something else to worry about

WOW How sad Thank- God she's alive tho. When my Mother was a young girl she went to the pool alot also, One day a little girls hair became trapped in the drain and she was puled under and drowned. That was the last time My Mom was allowed to go to that pool. ( My grandfather was a Police Officer at that time ). He had to work the case. The pool closed that day and never reopen. that was some 65+ years ago.

We go to our local pool just about every day. I have to ask about the drain system.
Thank you for posting this.

This is one of those things my Mom said could happen, that I never actually believed. I was never allowed to go to a pool. When we went swimming we went to a private beach in the area. That is just too scary. I will be keeping this young girl and her family in my prayers.

I know that at our community pool, part of each day's opening process is to check the drain covers in both the main pool and the baby pool.

One day screws were missing from the one in the baby pool and we had to close it until the management company could come out to fix it.

The amount of suction that is required for the filters/drains is incredible and is even greater on larger pools. I've always just told me kids not to go anywhere near the drains.

I feel so bad for the little girl. My husband says something like this happens several times a year and people are so surprised to hear about it. I wouldn't not go to a pool but I would take the time to check out the drain situation.

OMG that is awful I had heard of drownings due to hair being sucked in but never this. I had my 12 yr DD watch and I will have my 13 DD watch also.
That poor little girl and her family. Just makes me sick to think about.

I would talk to the lifeguard about the type of drain. I've heard of this before. It almost always happens in the baby pools where it's easy to sit right on top of the drain.
