Should a 3 1/2 year old sofa be getting holes?

We have a Sealy Couch that is 3 1/2 years old.

The first year, the fabric was pilling really badly -- no problem. I got a fabric shaver and took care of that. Now, there are actual holes starting to come through in two places in the sitting area.

Is it normal for a sofa to be wearing this quickly? We've had other furniture hold up for decades... and this couch was not a cheap one!

The warranty on fabric was for one year so I'm trying to get in touch with the manufacturer and get some fabric to replace it and then I might sell the set! and get something that will last.

What would you do?

No I would think not. Unless my children have visited you house then I would say yes.

But I would expect a couch to last at least 7-10 years. I don't know I have a couch from 4 years ago and it still looks new.

Did you think it was from using the fabric shaver ? I used a fabric shaver on a Broyhill couch and got holes too. Luckly, it as on one side of the cushions so I could flip them.

Sadly, it could be. It was pilling so badly though. I think that is what it is called... the little fuzz balls. The store that I bought it from recommended the shaver.

Unfortunately, the seat bottom is attached and not a removeable pillow.

We had the same problem you're having. It was a really nice couch and lounge (the wraparound couch). Anyway, the fabric started fuzzing up. I didn't shave it like you did --just left it. So I don't think your shaving it had anything to do with it. The warranty ran out and just like you, the wear and tear started. This couch was only a few years old. I called the manufacturer and complained (we paid over $2000 for the whole set and that was 10 years ago). They said since it wasn't under warranty, there wasn't anything they could do. Then the mechanism for one of the lounge chairs broke. I called again and kept complaining. They didn't give me any money back but they sent new mechanisms for both chairs and new fabric. I can't remember right now who the manufacturer was. But the place where we bought it had gone out of business. If they'd still been in business, that entire sofa group would have been taken right back to their store.

It's sitting in our basement now and we have new furniture. But what a waste of money. I talked to a salesman at another furniture store and he said it was the type of fabric. I'll know never ever to get that type of fabric again.

It's frustrating to spend so much money on something only to have it turn into a piece of junk in just a few years. I'd definitely keep pestering the manufacturer until they at least send you fabric or something.

We've had problems with Sealy furniture in the past. The material did pil, but after the warranty was up. The springs in one of our couches died, to the point that you would sit back and fall deep into the couch (if that makes any sense). We had that one replaced by warranty. The same thing happened a few years later to the other couch after the warranty expired, so we ended up getting rid of the whole set. I consider Sealy furniture to be junk and a big waste of money.
