Arrow Wow!

Just think what a career she could've had in racing ........ I mean if she could drive that fast at the distance drunk and at her age, she must've learned something somewhere.

*I too, wonder where parents are and I why she is picking up her sis at a concert.....WTF is wrong wif some parents?

**I am very glad that she survived the accident with little injury. It couldve been alot worse.

There's a legal limit for minors?

I can only guess that's for something like having wine with dinner...

I thought that was really weird myself...and chalked it up to maybe things being different in Alabama! It seemed like Driving without a license would have been a charge too. I think around here that the parents would have been chareged with something as well. Incredible story! 11 years old...driving a car....drunk - wow!

Where do you live? This happened literally 10-15 minutes down the road from my house.

cjs, just curious as to why you'd chalk it up to things being "different" in Alabama? I know that I won't let my 11 year old drive until he's 13 and he can't drink until he's 15. You know, cause it's so different here.

I am very curious now. What is the legal ages in Alabama for drinking and for driving. I know here in Indiana, (someone correct me if I'm wrong) they can't drive (legally) till 15 w/permit and parent. And drinking is 21.

Now I know that farmers and people that live out in the country let their children drive sooner. But my children won't be doing either till they are legally old enough.

I am truly curious about this and don't want anyone to think I am bashing or making fun.

It's the same here, 15 w/permit and parent, drinking is 21. I thought it was like that it most states? Maybe I was a tad touchy, but I really hate the misconception that people seem to perpetuate about Alabama being backwoods and country-fied.

The coast is not truly a farming community, but rather a resort-type area. Granted, in more rural areas of Baldwin county (which is huge) you'll find tractors and other farm equipment on the road, but that's generally the exception and not the rule.

I just bristle at broad, sweeping generalizations of people.

Ummm....it sounds like you might have read more into that than I intended. Different than here, not different as in unusual. Different than here because we don't have a legal alcohol limit for children. Different than here because it's been my experience that there are some fundamental differences between the North and the South....we are rude, Southerners genteel.

Sorry if I offended you, that certainly wasn't my intent.

Not offended...just bristled. I'm sure--no, positive--that I've done the same. No harm, no foul.

Here in Kansas, kids can get a permit at 14. As a parent of a 14 year old, I have no objections to that rule. My only question in this issue would be the "legal" drinkning limit for minors. The article is telling children that it is ok to drink and drive but stay "under .02" HUH???? This is why we have soooooo many repeat DUI offenders. I was hit my a drunk driver about 3 years ago. The driver.... was a 19 year old male that blew a .055. Over the minor limit and under adult limit. I was told by the ADA that if it would have gone to trial.. he would be found not guilty beacuse of the adult limit. Out of all that (and $5000+ damage) he got a devirsion. BTW~ his mother's check had bounced 3 days prior for insuranc so he had NONE> HELLO???? Waht is that talling the children today? Sorry to vent but I just don't understand the crazy laws and minor drinking limits.

I kind of bristle at the implication that being country-fied and living in an area where there are more tractors than resorts certifies you as a hick.

I was never allowed to drive until it was legal (age 15 1/2 with a permit, and 16 for a license, while farm permits were allowed for kids age 14 and up, and I believe tractor licenses are issued to 12 year olds once they pass the test and/or complete tractor driving school). I know many farm kids did drive much earlier than legal. Their parents felt it was out of "necessity" in order to help move cattle, equipment, etc., from one parcel of land to another.

Farm kids can get school permits at age 13 or 14, once they hit an age where they are likely to have after school athletic practices and therefore don't have the option of riding the bus home. I find it a little freaky to see kids driving themselves to middle school. They are not allowed to have any passengers (other than siblings) and are not allowed on any streets/roads not on the path between their home and the school. No driving to WalMart on the way home, etc.

I know EXACTLY where Navarre is! A close family friend of ours used to own Navarre Fishing Pier (this was way back before '96) and we used to go there fairly often. My FIL used to own Pensacola Beach Fishing Pier before Opal washed it away in '95.

It *is* a small world!
