| How can I fix my daughter's hair?
Over the past month we have gone to the public pool 4-5 times a week and it is totally killing my daughter's hair. She is 6 and has fine hair to begin with, but it is so dry and brittle and she is getting crazy split ends from wearing goggles too. I have tried using some conditioning treatments on her hair and they don't seem to be doing the trick. Does anyone know of a really good daily conditioner that can help save her hair? Maybe even something that I can put on her hair prior to entering the pool. I am using a swimming shampoo to help strip off the chemicals so her hair doesn't turn green. Can that be harsh on her hair? I even got fed up and had 3 inches cut off over the weekend. Her hair is still shoulder length, so I am tempted to cut off even more if I can fix it. Any suggestions are appreciated! |

If your daughter's hair is as bad as you say, I would really suggest trying Nuetrogena Triple Moisture Conditioner (it's in a yellowish tube) Use it daily, especially on pool days. The conditioner is a bit pricier than others, but it is so good. Especially for damaged hair. I suggest a "GOOD" clarifying shampoo to strip the chemicals from the hair. Then condition with the above. I personally do NOT like shampoos made for use after swimming because they are harsh and add additional chemicals to the hair, which can be worse than the normal effects of chlorine. In addition, it DOES help to wet hair prior to entering the pool. Also, I would suggest using a spray on moisturizing conditioner (leave in type) prior to getting in the pool as well as spraying periodically throughout the swim session. > Reason: first, the hair is dry and needs conditioning. Second, the spray on will help prevent the chemicals in the pool from penetrating the hair and causing damage. MOST importantly, do NOT let the hair dry while outside in the heat AFTER being in the pool. The reason is because the sun will set the chemicals in the hair. Think of it as the sun being an oven, it will bake the chlorine into the hair. Thus, you'll want to keep it wet at all times, even if you have to dunk into the pool. At the end of the day/swim session, RINSE hair well to prevent the chemicals from drying on the hair. (If you can't rinse before getting home, I suggest using a water spray bottle to keep it moist until able to rinse) ***I personally take a spray bottle of water with me to the pool as well as a leave in conditioner and use it regularly. My hair is extremely fine. I am also a licensed cosmetologist. If you have other questions, feel free to ask. HTH!

Thank you everyone for your suggestions!! I am very excited to try this out. . .I had no clue on getting her hair wet first and that makes complete sense. I would put spray in conditioner in her hair prior to going into the pool, but I didn't fully saturate her hair. I will put her under the shower first and I told her to make sure that she doesn't let the pool water dry on her hair. I am also going to try some new conditioners. I can't believe I am going to be spending more money on her haircare than my own!! (and she is just turning 6 in a few days). |
