Longshot? Can anyone recommend a Labradoodle breeder?

We are hoping to surprise the kids with a puppy for Christmas, I know I need to start looking now. Can anyone help us find a good Labradoodle Breeder? (Close to NJ would be preferred, but will look anywhere)

Thanks!!

Why don't you look on Craigslist for NJ and NY. Also, look in your local paper.

I would check with the local vet offices in your area. They might have a client that breeds.

The Labradoodle is a fancy name for a cross between a lab and a poodle. It's a mutt - not a purebred! Get a dog from the pound. It'll be good for the kids to know that a dog was saved at Christmas time.

We need a no-shed dog. The labradoodle has all the characteristics we are looking for in a dog. I love dogs, but simply cannot put up with the dog hair, the only way I will even agree to a dog again is one that doesnt shed. We donate money and food to the shelter all the time. At least we are doing "something" for them.

Remember that hairless pet on Friends? Was that a cat or a dog? Sorry, your post reminded me of that, but that thing would scare your kids. I would do a wanted post on several Craigslist's in your area.

My sister works in a vet's office and these dogs DO shed. All the Poodle mix's do.

ALL DOGS SHED !!!!!!

Sorry to "yell", but that is the truth! Some dogs tend to shed less than others, but they all shed! Whoever started that myth is ridiculous

I have to disagree. I had thought that too. But my shih tzu is 13 years old has never shed. Had a poodle and pug before her they both shed.

We have a labradoodle, so I understand your reasoning. These dogs are bred to be much less likely to cause allergic reactions in people with sensitivities, and to shed minimally. They were originally bred as aid dogs for blind people w/dog allergies, and have also been used to assist autistic children with allergies.

You probably already know that the first generation puppies shed more than the second, and the third less than the second, etc., so find a breeder who has been doing this for awhile to minimize the hair. My labradoodle is having some skin/allergy issues herself, but I have not found that this is endemic to the breed, though there is a condition in poodles known as sebaceous adenitis, so we're trying to rule that out.

FWIW, our experience with our dog (now almost 3) has been predominantly positive. She is a good-natured girl, which is very important to me. No aggression ever. She has lots of energy (see me rolling my eyes), as do most labs. She has always responded well to positive training, is very loving with the kids. She housetrained well, but took more effort with that than some of my other dogs have. Lots of patience on that one. She is also soooooooo quiet!! I have never had a dog who barks less than this one! She will go a couple of weeks between barks, and each bark is a single bark! We are so used to her silence, it is always startling when she barks.

I wish you lots of luck in your search, and hope you find the best puppy for your home.

Sorry, there's no such thing as a "good breeder" of mixed breed dogs. "Good" breeders don't mix breeds and present them as the latest and greatest. You're just as likely to end up with all the "bad" traits of each breed. Please don't support backyard breeders by buying a designer dog.

I guess I have a different mindset about what constitutes "designer." I think of purebreds that way. Ours is a mixed breed (a Peek-a-Poo) and he's been a great dog. He was bred by a psychiatrist and his wife. He had researched to find dogs suitable for use in therapy with his patients, as many people tend to open up more with a dog to pet/distract them. He found that this mix seemed to end up with the traits he wanted his therapy dogs to have. The first litter had just three pups, and he kept two of them for use in his practice and sold one. They were such nice dogs that he had four more litters before stopping when they moved overseas.

He sheds minimally, poops small, eats little, and is friendly and loving. Not especially astute, but he's ours and we love him.

I understand that you love your dog, but when there are so many great dogs being put to sleep I think there is no excuse to breed mixed-breed dogs.

And, if the hair bugs the OP, I'd like to gently suggest that she think twice about getting a dog at all. Dogs have accidents in the house, they chew things up, all sorts of things that are less desirable than shedding, I would think. No breed or mix is immune to mistakes and occasional bad behavior.

I don't consider my dog a "designer dog", nor the latest and greatest. Sometimes dogs are bred for a purpose, and since each family has it's own needs and style, I think it's great there is the ability to find a dog that fits your family's life. I have 'rescued' animals before, and have had both good and bad experiences in that regard. Not every dog in a pound is fabulous and just in need of a good home. Some dogs have big problems, and they can be insurmountable for even the most experienced owner.
I am all for rescuing an animal when you can do so in a way that's positive for the animal and positive for your family, but I am also very comfortable with the fact that different choices work for different people.

I'll have to disagree with you. My "firstborn" was a poodle-dachshund mix and she did not shed. Every so often she would lose tufts of hair but it was totally different from our current dogs. We have dog hair EVERYWHERE. I wished we would have held out for another poodle mix (stupid me took the kids with me) even though I love the pups.

I am allergic to EVERYTHING (dust, mold, grass, pollen, pet dander, cigarette smoke, etc...the list is endless!)! I heard that I should look into getting a Bichon Frise because they shead the least out of the attainable animals. They're not totally impossible to find.

I looked all over the internet and craigslist. I looked in my paper this past Sunday and I found 3 ads. The first two didn't sound kosher to me. But when I called the third one, she sounded so nice and lives 5 minutes away from me so I decided to at least check them out. I went over and she told me that for me to really pick the "right addition to my family" I needed to stay with them for at least 2-3 hours playing with them and such. And with my allergies as bad as they are I wanted to scope out her house to see how much pet fur was everywhere and I wanted to rub the puppies all over me and sniff them just to see if I would have an allergy attack.

All dogs shed, but some shed MUCH less than others. I looked around her house and saw very little fur on her light colored furniture. Also got down with the puppies and hugged on them, and yes...sniffed them. I didn't sneeze for about an hour into our visit. Which for me is awesome! Needless to say I have a little ball of fluff named "Lucy" sitting right by me now! Such a sweet temperment and a joy to have!

I am not a child. You "gently suggested" that I shouldnt own a dog because I dont like the shedding? If you dont mind dog hair, that doesnt make you a better dog owner, (it makes you hairy)

I have owned dogs my whole life except for the past 7-8 years. I put up with hair, accidents and chewing, jumping, barking etc. This time I decided, its going to be on MY terms. The hair everywhere was WAAAAYYYYY more bothersome to me than the occasional accident or chewed shoe. With tons of dog hair, your house looks a mess, your clothes look a m ess, your car, your kids, and You always feel dirty and itchy.

Thankyou to everyone else.

In my house, dog hair is an accessory!! As soon as the clothes come out of the dryer, it seems they have some sort of pet hair on them.

I have a cat, and 2 purebred Beagles.

I can sweep daily and still have hair everywhere!! Luckily, the whole shedding thing does not bug anyone in the family.

OP - best of luck finding a dog to suit your wants/needs.

momshops, we have a maltepoo and like yours is extremely non-aggressive and quiet. She barks only when she wants to come in. That's it. She didn't even bark the first few months we had her. I've never found pet hair anywhere and we have dark colored furniture. She is only allowed 1 - 2 baths/month b/c the vet said the mix tends to get dry skin thanks to the parents. And the way she is with children, is amazing. Absolutely amazing.

Jetalamo, good luck in your search. I think poodle mixes are some of the best dogs out there!
