Any Suggestions on a Good Read

I have a summer cold and have been trapped in the house for days. I am soooo bored and to keep me from killing my husband, I need something to pass the time. Can someone suggest a good read? I love Janet Evanovich and read all of hers. Do you know of anything kinda like hers? TIA

Sue Grafton -- alphabet mystery series remind me a lot of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series.

'A is for Alibi', 'B is for Burgler', and so on.

It is also called the Kinsey Millhone mystery series.

I hope that you feel better soon. That is hard.

Barbara Taylor McCafferty & Beverly Taylor Herald The identical twins who write the quirky Tatum Twin mysteries about identical twins Bert and Nan.

I think that these twins write easy read books close to Janet E's

Double Murder I think is the first one.

I just finished this book: Lisa Lutz, author The Spellman Files. I think this book was even funnier than Janet Evanovich's books--I don't think I've ever read a book that had me chuckling almost all the way through!

Patricia Cornwell is a great read. The main characters in her books are a medical examiner / lawyer with the FBI and law enforcemwnt. The lead character is Kay Scarpetta.

Janet Evanovich is a good read --- lite and funny - She writes the Stephanie Plum series.

I just read "Good In Bed" by the same author that wrote "In Her Shoes". I've been passing it around the office, and everyone has LOVED it.

How 'bout the new Jackie Collins book "Drop Dead Beautiful" I just finished it. It's another great Lucky story, If you've read the others
Or Lisa See's "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" That was a very good book heres the blurb:

"Lily is haunted by memories --- of who she once was, and of a person, long gone, who defined her existence. She has nothing but time now, as she recounts the tale of Snow Flower, and asks the gods for forgiveness.

In nineteenth-century China, when wives and daughters were foot-bound and lived in almost total seclusion, the women in one remote Hunan county developed their own secret code for communication: nu shu ("women's writing"). Some girls were paired with laotongs, "old sames," in emotional matches that lasted throughout their lives. They painted letters on fans, embroidered messages on handkerchiefs, and composed stories, thereby reaching out of their isolation to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments.

With the arrival of a silk fan on which Snow Flower has composed for Lily a poem of introduction in nu shu, their friendship is sealed and they become "old sames" at the tender age of seven. As the years pass, through famine and rebellion, they reflect upon their arranged marriages, loneliness, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood. The two find solace, developing a bond that keeps their spirits alive. But when a misunderstanding arises, their lifelong friendship suddenly threatens to tear apart."

I didn't know there was a new book! I love Jackie Collins, nothing like a good trashy novel! I'm going on vacation on Tues...I may have to run out and get it. Is it only hardback or paperback?

I'm not sure about the HB vs PB. I was lucky enough to find it on the Library shelf.

I think the Jackie Collins book is only in hardcover as it is a new release.

"Free Food For Millionaires" was very good, a nice long book, which I love. "A Thousand Splendid Suns", by the author of "Kite Runner" was good.

I read a lot of biographies and non-fiction, so if anyone is interested in those, I'd be happy to share some I've read lately.

Enjoy your beach time!

I read the blurb on this - it sounds depressing; was it?

I know a lot of people have read it.

'A Thousand Splendid Suns' was great - I really recommend it.

I'm now just starting the Stephanie Plum series - I don't know why I never read her before - I'm really enjoying it.

No, I didn't find it depressing. It gave an interesting and poignant insight into old age and it told a really exciting tale at the same time. It's definitely a page turner.

"Water for Elephants" was really good. It is not my usual taste, and I bought it on a whim, but enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.

I read 2 -3 books a week -- fiction and non fiction. I work part time in a library too.

The best book that I have read in awhile was A Thousand Splendid Suns. I highly recommend it. It's only out in hardcover.

That being said, did you know that Janet Evanovich has a new book out -- Lean, Mean Thirteen. It's out new this past month? It's Ok. Not as good as others in the series. She had co-author with the book, and that might have made a difference. Hard cover on this one. Two or three months ago, she put out a short book called "Plum Lovin" . It's a half step book (between 12 and 13). It was a taste of Stephanie. Hardcover only. I don't like any of J. Evanovitch's books that are not in the the Stephanie Plum series.

I like Water For Elephants. It was different but good. Hardcover only at this point.

I just started the new Jackie Collins book today. Lucky's daughter wants to hook up with someone she met on the internet.

I'd like to recommend a series that is like a light version of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. The author is Laura Levine. The first book in the series is " This Pen for Hire" (a Jaine Austen mystery).
I've read most of the Jaine Austen books. They are funny and a quick read. She is little bit naughty like Stephanie Plum.

Go to: Amazon.com: levine, laura: Books to read about them. All of her books are out in paperback except for the latest one "Death by Pantyhose". Our library has copies of all of the books, so yours might too.

You don't have to read them in order, but do read This Pen for Hire first. It lays down the basic premise.

I'm waiting for my turn on our library hold's reserve list for "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan'. I heard that one was good.

A lot of us like the same books!!

I just remembered -- James Patterson has 3 new books out: The 6th Target, Step On a Crack, and The Quickie. They were all good. The Quickie had so many plot reversals that your mouth just drops open. Very fast moving and an easy read.

Most of his books tend to be a murder mystery types.

Someone mentioned Sue Grafton and all of her mystery books are good in the alphabet series.

Have you read the Bubbles series by Sarah Strohmeyer? I think there are 5 books in the series and they are similar to the Janet Evanovich.
