Computer problem/I need advice

I have DSL the second to the highest that BellSouth offers. My problem is I'm still fairly slow.

My question is do I need to upgrade my ram or my processor. Or are those even what I need to replace? Is there something else I can do to help it?

TIA,
Laura

Do you have a filter on your line?

**Said in a teen voice** Huh?

Seriously though, I know next to nothing about computers and have no idea what you are talking about. I do know I have 503MB of Ram and an Intel(R) Celeron(R) D CPU 3.46GHz. Don't have a clue what any of that means but it seems important. LOL

Thanks,
Laura

DSL filter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

We were having problems with ours and the filter seemed to help. DH is a computer wiz I am just like you. But I do know that this helped.

Addison - I will have to check into the filter. After readying the wiki that very well could be the problem.

Dave -
Cookies - just a few minutes ago.
Spyware - after I deleted cookies and downloaded and ran SpyBot.
The whole thing seems slow. IE: Opening a file that has been saved from wordpad takes several minutes. It's getting very agravating. I got so mad earlier that I went and got out my old computer that has XP on it. I'm not so sure some of my problems are from Vista.

Thanks for yalls help.
Laura

maybe your computer is overheating have you cleaned your fan yet ? this program will tell you how hot your CPU is if yours goes over 70 than that might be the problem
SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

The filters are mostly for your phone to prevent static and damage to your phone. If you have more than 1 phone jack, plug your phone into one and use the filter with your phone. On the other jack use your dsl with no filter .Better yet is to not use your phone at all which is what I do.
There are a lot of ways to make your computer faster.
Editing registry settings, turning off services (processes)that run in the background that are rarely used or setting them to manual, removing unnessesary startup programs.Uninstalling any programs you don't use.If you use a special Firewall or Antivirus program, switch to one that doesn't use as much system resources.

Find a Notebook, Desktop, Server, Printer, Software, Service, Monitor or TV at Dell. has a forum. I have read on there a LOT of people having problems with Vista.

We bought a MAC. Solved our problems.

How to use MSCONFIG: NetSquirrel.com
This is my favourite Windows utility. Getting rid of stuff that runs in the background should make everything run faster, because it means your RAM is being used for the programs you choose to run, not ones that are automatically set to run. On XP or Vista machines, sticking with the Startup tab (all you need to worry about) is pretty harmless, too. Vista does also have a lot pretty but unnecessary things you can turn off, like the side Gadgets.

If the whole computer's slow, the problem isn't your internet. Your processor and RAM are really good, and shouldn't need any fixing.

Thanks for that site! There is a link on there to this site: Sysinfo.org Great info about what each of those processes under your "startup tab" are, and if they are necessary.

Thanks for all the info. We had the filters on the phone line (DH knew exactly what you all were talking about), we took those completely off. That seemed to help somewhat. I then went through and unchecked lots of things I don't use so they wouldn't be running in the background or on startup. It actually seems quite a bit quicker, no where near as sluggish as it was.

I found a site, I have to find it for you guys, that told what each thing did and what could be disabled.

Thanks again,
Laura

Edited to add: The website I mentioned above is Vista Rewired it has tons of info. Some of which is WAY above my head. But never the less very informative.

I found that site to be quite helpful. Thank you!
