Question for Teachers & School supplies

I was just wondering if "ALL" the school supplies on list are necessary?

I have a 5th grader & the list of supplies are going to cost me at least $100, my 1st graders is going to be about $120 & 7th graders is around $150

Now I have ALWAYS bought EVERY item on the list, but now that I have 3 needing school items, it makes me wonder if all is really necessary.

I KNOW there are kids who don't bring a thing, usually all items go into the "comminuty pile" which means all share....which makes me upset when I buy name brand quality supplies & my kid has to use the Roseart crayons that break the 1st time you use them.

Also I am asked every year to bring in additional suppplies at least 3 times thru out the year also.

So my question is do you all buy all items on list, or just the basic stuff & send items thru out the year??

~Thanks for your imput ~

WOW, that sounds like a lot. Would you mind sharing your list??? I'm sure lots of people on this board can help you find the stuff cheap, cheap, cheap.

6 comp. notebooks

8 spiral notebooks 70 ct. wide ruled

4 2" binders

here is just the 5th graders, the 7th graders is so expensive because she needs that $100 calcuater.

I laughed when I saw this list, he will need help carrying all this stuff in. It seems to grow larger & larger every year.
I was also told the teachers will have yet another supply list on the day of open house....

Don't get me wrong, I am more than happy to help the school, but it's been very tight since hubby was laid off 3 months ago & I don't want to spend the $ right now if I dont have to & this just seems excessive.

That is absolutely rediculous! I would send in just the bare minimum of what he needs then tell the teacher you will replenish his school supplies throughout the year as needed. I would never send in that amount of supplies at the beginning of the year. Our school suplies never cost over $25. Just keep an eye out for the sales, Office Depot had the notebook paper for .15 a pack, Staples last week had the pencils and pencil sharpeners for .01 each, 2 packs of compostion notebooks .99 (I don't think this was on sale), they also had the folders for .01 each. I think Walmart had the glue sticks 2-pack for .20.

first off,I would not be sending 8 pack of pencils(2 pencils are enough ,and my kids tell me when they need more)
and so one with the rest,I mean 1 pack of paper,1 pack of index card,1 glue stick.1 of each colored folder.1 sharpie etc...
I have the same problem,my kindergartener " needs" 8 packs of crayons,2 packs of crayola markers,4 bottle of glue ,2 sets of paint.....hum no!

I would have a fit if my kids teacher sent home this list. They are asking for way too many of everything. There are enough supplies on that list to get at least 4 kids through school for the entire year. I would not send in the amount that they requested. I would tell the teacher when my child runs low he/she can tell me or you can write a note. But I think that is way too much stuff for one child. I can't even believe this list! That is way way too much stuff.

6 boxes of kleenex? We only send in 2
economy pack of sharpies? One should last all year
3 packs of hand sanitizer? What happened to soap and water?
6 boxes of crayons? My kids only need 2 packs for the year. Just because they have lost their point doesn't mean they don't work.
6 boxes of ziploc bags? I have never heard of that
4 packs of baby wipes? Why? I have never heard of that
4 boxes of dry erase markers? One box should do

Way to much stuff on that list. I would only send in what I thought my kid would need. The schools supply just about everything where I live.

When I saw that list, I thought it was for all 3 of your kids!!
That's crazy. I have a friend who's decided that she will only send in what her child will use. For example, the teacher asks for white board markers and the students do not use those, the teacher does. The teacher should buy those with the allowance she gets to supply her room. Now I know that it's hard for teachers to buy all they need with the small amount of money they're given. In our school, they're given $100 from the PTA and some money from the county. Honestly, can they not afford a couple of packs of white board markers? If not, put them on a wish list. My 2nd grader's list included post it notes in an odd size and when I finally found them they were almost $4.00 for a small pack. Ridiculous!
Personally, OP I agree with the others who said buy what your child can use and replenish them as your child tells you he/she needs it. My dd kept coming home last year needing pencils. So I sent a couple of dozen(there were 20 students in the class). A week later, she said they needed more. I sent more. This happened about 4 times before I got smart(slow I know, LOL). But as it turned out, one student was taking 4 or 5 every day, taking them home and in a week all the pencils I sent in were gone. My dd brought home the pencil she was using and it was about 3 inches long. From there on, I send in 1 or 2 for my dd and not send supplies in large quantities for others to take home.

Yeah thats what I was thinking.
Just what they need to get by & bring them in more when there out.
I just wanted to make sure I wasn't an awful parent for doing this.
I just can't financially I can't do it this year.
I was also thinking how in the world is a single classroom gonna fit all these supplies from 25+ students

14 large glue sticks?????????? that's ridiculous. I am a teacher and the list really seems out of line. Do you know any of the other parents? How do they feel about it? I cannot imagine using all those supplies. I would buy 1 or 2 of each item. The classrooms must be huge to be able to fit everything.

I am thinking that not all the kids will come prepared, and the teacher thinks that by asking so much ,some parents will buy everything ,and she will have enough fo rthe kids who don;t have anything..it is that way in my school.
I don;t do it,I can't afford that....

I am sure this is what is going on. I am a teacher and my pet peeve w/my daughter's school is they pad everything from supply lists to Field Trip $$$ to make up for everyone else. Mind you she goes to a public magnet Montessori school , public being the operative word here. Free public education! I don't mind sending a reasonable amount of supplies but we have been asked for things like toilet paper, paper towels, light bulbs, etc.

If there are special things that the teacher wants to use, such as baby wipes, hand sanitizer, ziploc bags, etc...she should purchase them with her supply money that she gets at the beginning of the year. Otherwise, she should purchase them herself...part of the cost of doing business. Sounds like you were given a wish list, not a supply list.

I've also learned to buy pencils that are a different color. One year I found green wooden pencils. DS was always coming home saying someone was taking his pencils. It's hard to prove that point when everyone has a yellow pencil. I agree with sending in only what's needed. Teachers tend to request composition books for journals. The comp book comes home at the end of the year with a few pages in the front used and the rest used as doodling paper by my child.
Sharpies are permanent markers and I can't imagine why an elementary student would even need them. In fact, I've never had them requested for my children. Forget the hand sanitizer, baby wipes and ziplocs. That's absurd! I don't send in Kleenex at the beginning of the year. I wait until January and ask if Kleenex are needed. Plus, when my children's allergies are bothering them, they carry around a boutique size box to keep from getting up and getting Kleenex off the teacher's desk. Sticky notes are rarely used.

Baby wipes could be if the school has anyone with like peanut allergies, in my son's class a couple years ago the kids would all wipe their hands before entering the room especially after lunch knowing someone could have brought a PB&J to eat.

I've gotten lists like those before i usually got the stuff I knew he was going to use like a folder for each class and a binder type stuff, I give him like 5 pencils bulk pencils off of oriental trading but I'd send like Valentines pencils in August since not many would have them. we're a family of 6 and only hubby works, we have 2 in school now 1 more year for third boy to start, no way could we buy everything some of the teachers want for their rooms

When DD was in kindergarten, we sent in baby wipes for the kids to wipe their hands before lunch, since they didn't have time to wash their hands before eating. We also had to send in shaving cream. They used this to clean their tables.

Sharpies are not allowed at my kids' schools.....apparently some kids were "sniffing" them.

That list is absurd, to say the least.

BTW, the Fiskars kids scissors are .99 this week At Walgreens. They also have a sale on the paper, and lots of other stuff.

They use baby wipes at our school in the computer room. Before each kid touches the key pads they wipe them off with baby wipes to try to cut down on spreading germs. BUT...we have to bring in 1 box at the beginning of the year. If they run out mid year, they ask for parents to send them in and the class that brings in the most gets a popsicle party.

Well, I am a teacher and have two kids who will both be in high school this year. That list is absurdly ridiculous. I would send ONE of most everything on the list....minus the ziplocks, baby wipes and sharpies and dry erase (had they required little white boards for each student one dry erase would have been sufficient anyways). It does seem like the list is trying to get a few to pay for everybody else. I definitely would not do it. Send one of each thing your child needs and then replenish as needed.

I work in a middle school, and we give a list of needed supplies for the year. When I bought my own kids' supplies off the list, by shopping the before school sales I NEVER spend more than $15.00 (not including backpacks and needed replenishments or additions throughout the year). AND, at our school, if you want or find it more convenient, the school will put together a package for your child from the grade level list and charge you $30-$35 for it.

Do not overspend money that you do not have. You won't shortchange your child by cutting the list to one of most of the items only. Don't be guilted into buying more than needed. IF you want to donate SOME extra, do it from the sales listed here on MC.

Another teacher here. It sounds like the teacher wants make sure they have supplies for the whole year.
I would not send in all that stuff. The child would not have room in their desk for that much stuff. The teacher would not have room in her room for that much stuff. Outside of the traditional stuff, I only ask for kleenex because of storage problems. I teach 5th grade. The lower grades collect paper towels and cleaner for the desks so every year I get some of that because parents forget what grade their in. I use the paper towel that the school uses in the bathroom. Now I use folders for the 3 subjects I teach. If a child uses paper ones, we replace them in midyear because they fall apart. 3 years ago when I taught math, we used little white boards. I co-taught with another teacher. She bought the dry erase pens with her teacher money. We used them everyday. Soon the pens were used up. So we asked the kids to bring in their own. I put it on my list this year because I will teach math again this year. By the way, we use to get $125 from the PTA for things we wanted. Last year the principal said because we got a raise (a little more then normal for the older teachers) she kept the money for other things. New principal this year, I wonder if we will get it back.

FWIW, my kids have both needed sharpies around 5-7th grades for the map work that they do. I never thought it was unreasonable to provide them, but then again we were only asked for 4 colors at most (and only ONE of each ) and Target had them for about $3-4 regular price.

There is not a chance in h*ll, that I would send in the things listed on that supply list. How the heck is one kid going to use 30 folders in one year. Neither of my boys went through folders that fast. I would get my child one of everything on the list and I would send in only what they could use.

I do buy the classroom two boxes of tissues and hand sanitizer. Dont mind doing that one bit. But I am not going to get 6 boxes of tissues and 3 bottles of handsanitizer.

From the looks of the list, it sounds like the teacher is doing a lot of wishing! It isnt my job to supply the teacher with things she/he wants like sharpie markers and post it notes.

Can you check with someone who had this teacher last year? Like I said, I teach 5th grade and I wonder how he/she will use some of these supplies.

Wow...after seeing that list I feel lucky. Our school system gets a decent amount of money from the state and the teachers are not allowed to ask the parents for anything other than what the child personally uses (pencils, crayons, glue, etc.). They cannot ask for paper towels, germ-x, kleenex, dry erase markers, etc. If a parent specifically ask if they can send in hand sanitizer (or something) the teacher can tell them yes..but they cannot ask for any of it.

If every kid brought all of that, where would she store all of that?

Cost... 4 binders! I'm looking for a good deal on ONE of those!

Jpmouser, your school sounds like ours. Thankfully.

GAWD, I remember going to school with just a pencil........and that was junior high. Up until then, the school gave us a new one each month..........and that nice white paper we would get. But, I guess with budget cuts, etc.

I have a whole supply cabinet full of extra supplies. I buy them whenever I see them cheap. I always ask the teachers if they need anything. Lots of times, I'll just send in a "goody bag" of stuff to school, in addition to our supplies list....reminds me , I need to calll for ours right now.

While I appreciate buying the supplies now while they're on sale rather than later when they are full price, that list is crazy.

That list is very similiar to what my kids have to bring in, except that they asked for more wipes, and tissues, and glue sticks than what yours did. We are also asked numerous times during the year for more supplies. Then we are asked for extra things like Sammy is in K this year so he has to have a full sized bath rug for "rest time", and a travel pillow and blanket for this. They all have to have 2 reusable water bottles, because they keep water bottles at their desks all day. I know there is more that I am not even thinking about right now. This is the first time to have all 3 in shool so I am not looking forward to that bill!

Our county does not allow a list and makes the teachers buy all the supplies for all the students. I usually buy the standards anyway(paper, notebooks, pencils)

Wow...feel better about our lists now. Ours are made by the school, not the teacher and you DO get the extras sent home. At the end of the year, we got back 2 notebooks and some markers he didn't use so that was nice. That said, we don't have to bring in 7 or 8 of each item with a total cost of around $15 (elementary school). They do sell a "set" thru the school for like $20 and you are set BUT I buy on sale and get it all for under $8

I will have 5 in school this year, and all of their lists are this ridiculous.........It drives me crazy, because at the bottom of the list they have written.....DO NOT PUT NAMES ON SUPPLIES. I questioned them about this and was told they do community supplies. I have gotten into with a one of my sons teacher several times in the past because I would send in the required 15 boxes of pencils, and my son would lose or break a pencil or it would get down to the nub and she wouldn't give him a new pencil......

It costs us around 600 for supplies a year......so I feel your pain!

OMG, that is RIDICULOUS. You may want to consider going to a school board meeting, and voicing your opinion.

They all have to have 2 reusable water bottles, because they keep water bottles at their desks all day. I know there is more that I am not even thinking about right now. This is the first time to have all 3 in shool so I am not looking forward to that bill!

My son will be in kindergarten this year and he has to have the red/blue plastic nap mat. They are not allowed any kind of fabric mats due to "health issues" (aka head lice)

I am also a former PTO officer and at our school the same grade level supply lists have been used since my oldest was in Kindergarten (she's a sophomore now) So ask your teacher what she needs, most have cabinets FULL of supplies.

I get the basics for my kids and then anything the the teacher "really" needs.

I'm with everyone else--that list is wayyy out of line. However, up until this very year (my kids have already gone back as they are in year round school), our school was requiring all of the items on your list and then we even had to buy REAMS of copy paper! You may have listed that and I missed it. It was truly ridiculous. We did not have to send in 10 packages of the items though. More like 3 of each, which is still crazy and expensive. Each year right off the bat the list had 200 pencils per child on it! I could never figure out how in the world the kids went through that many supplies EACH. Of course I quickly figured out that I was supplying other students with supplies (or maybe the school was sending the supplies to other less fortunate schools in our district I don't know what was happening to all that). I remember one year, actually one of my daughter's teachers was SO MAD because she had so many Kleenex boxes that she literally had to rearrange an area of her room to stack them in, which took up valuable space in the classroom. She was like, no way will we ever go through that many Kleenex! She couldn't understand why they just couldn't request things as they need them (I understand the fairness of this of course--some people will get stuck bringing everything and some will bring nothing).

In the entire time my kids have been in school (I have a 6th grader and down), only ONE teacher (and she was new that year) gave the unused (or half used even) school supplies back at the end of the year. Even scissors and that kind of stuff; and I always put my kids' names on the supplies in black sharpie. I have 3 in school right now and I was easily spending $130 for the supplies too (for all 3 together not individually and that doesn't include backpacks and things they 'want'). Apparently over the years there has been a huge amount of backlash to the superintendent of schools/school board over the huge supply lists, and this year they made one list for all schools in this district and this year I spent about $15 per child. We are in the well known 'rich' school and most of the other schools in our district aren't as affluent--we certainly aren't rich but I think we are totally in the minority at this school as everyone else seems to be anyway.

Now, that being said (and I knew this was going to happen but I didn't think our school would be so 'sneaky' about it) on back to school night, each teacher gives us another handout with extra supplies that are needed--but they want us to just send in 'cash' so that the teachers can buy them. I suppose the district told them they can't ask for more 'supplies' but they've found a way to get around that by asking for cash. On top of that, there is another list of extra supplies that the kids will be needing into the school year that we "don't have to purchase now but they will need them later on" kinda deal. I truly knew this was going to happen, it will be interesting to see what happens next year with the school supply list. One of our teachers this year actually bought the runny school glue herself out of pocket she said (it wasn't on the list this year--glue sticks were and that's what we all bought) because she doesn't like glue sticks. HOWEVER, instead of telling us to take the glue sticks home or use them in another class, she had a box that she wanted us to deposit them into. I have no idea what she's going to do with those since she will not use them in her class. They are ultra cheap so I don't care actually, I would have gladly purchased the runny glue instead, Hopefully she is going to give them to another teacher to use. We have a lot of very poor districts around us so maybe the teachers are giving the extra supplies to those schools I don't know. Just curious I guess.

OP I would call the superintendent of schools or actually go down there with your school list. I'm betting chances are they don't even know the school/teacher is asking for that many supplies. I think the list is out of control.

We were asked to bring in more than any one child could use last year........So I made sure MY child used the stuff WE bought. I put her name on everything!!! **Jane Doe** was written on everything she sent in. Now I am the mom that the teacher asks to buy extra supplies when no one else will (beachratz too) but I am not padding her class for the next three years! Our school is a very difficult demographic, it truly is the have and the have nots. I have no problem with a teacher coming to me on the first day and saying x number of kids don't have this, this and this. I will go pick them up. But, just don't tell me my child needs twelve binders and then give us 8 back at the end of the year b/c you couldn't store them away in your personal supply b/c it has her name written all over it!!! (can you tell this drives me nuts) We sent in 4 boxes of pencils as was directed by the teacher.......my child forgot "her" pencil case at home and had to sign a pencil out! UNFREAKINGBELIEVABLE! We don't buy cheap school supplies, however I do get great deals on them but, I want my kids stuff to last, KWIM? I don't want to send in expensive school supplies that my kid is never going to use.

OP -- the list you got is crazy. No, I would not send all those items (and I am a mom who usually sends extra supplies if I know the teacher can use them). What on earth is one child going to do with 30 pocket folders and 6 boxes of crayons. I would send whatever you feel is enough for your child, write his/her name on everything and write the teacher a note saying that if you child runs out of a certain item to let you know so you can send more.

It seems like they are counting on a few to furnish supplies for the whole class. My friend's DD goes to an elementary school that goes to the pumpkin patch each year. Admission costs $3, but the school charges $12. This is because only 25% of the parents pay, but the district requires that all students be able to attend weather they pay or not.

Last year the teacher sent home a supply list and told us not to label anything. Well, stupid me listened to her. The teacher took all the supplies, mixed them up, passed them out to each student and THEN wrote their names on them. Did my DS get the good Crayola stuff or Fiskars scissors I bought -- of course not, he got the cheap stuff. I was livid!!! At the end of the year we didn't get the extra stuff back etiher (and I know there were extras). Instead we got a bunch of notebooks and journals with just a few used pages, which further proved that DS didn't do much academic in first grade <ugh>.

Why do Kids in Kindergarten need nap mats? My daughter did all day Kindergarten last year and they didn't nap.... I do agree that your supply list is EXCESSIVE. My son is in 6th grade and he needed: 6 -2 pkt folders, 2 pkgs notebook paper, 2 boxes pencils, compass, scissors, lg bottle hand sanitizer, protractor, ruler, pencil box, 4 spiral notebooks, 2 rolls paper towels, 2 BIG boxes kleenex, pkg blue pens, 2 red pens, 1 eraser, glue stick, a picture of himself and a flash drive. My 1st grader needed a large box of crayons, pencil box, 2 2pkt folders, 2 large erasers, markers, 2 boxes kleenex and baby wipes(they use these to clean up after parties and messy snacks) and hand sanitizer.

There is no way I would buy all that. One of each would just have to be good enough.

Mine are in 8th and 11th grades. Our lists weren't that bad this year. Although I changed the way I did things this year. The school puts out list in the paper and at the stores of the supplies needed for each grade. In years past I would buy all that was on those lists then low and behold the boys would bring in another list that the teacher made of stuff she really needed them to have. So this year I just skipped the first list and waited for the list from the teachers.

I've only spent about $45 so far. DS also needs an $85 calculator that I'm not going to buy. The school has them for them to borrow so that is what he will just have to do. I saved the scientific calculators as the both end up needing one of those each year, so I didn't have to repurchase those this year.
Today the both came in with things that weren't on lists that they now need. But that shouldn't amount to much.
Notecards
5 subject notebook college ruled
2 - 1 1/2" binders
Folder with pockets

DS 12 has to have a binder for each subject. I did buy the little inserts that fit the binder holes that hold pencils. I bought those and put 4 pencils and 2 pens in each binder. So that should do him for some time.

As far as the kindergarten nap mat. MY kids both did all day k. The did not need the nap mat, they just used beach towels. (easier to wash and such). They had a mandatory rest time for about 35 mins. Lights out, lying on floor, would have a kids show on tv. If they slept that was fine, but they had to lay still and stay quiet for the ones that did sleep.

A lot of kids going into k still take an afternoon nap (not mine but some). That is a hard transition for some kids to make.

About the ziplocs...my kids had those on the lists in elem school. Nearly every day they brought home art projects, homework (folded up) or notes from school, in the ziploc bags. Parents were asked to check those bags every day. Teachers said it was easier than trying to get parents to go thru backpacks, stuff gets buried and dies in backpacks lol

It's wasteful maybe, but they did use those a lot!

And this is OT but it bugs me that they ask for soaps, because the school will not put soap in dispensers because they get vandalized or spilled. No soap in the restrooms UGH nasty!!

I have two questions...what school doyour kids go to ( so I know not to move there) and second being a 5th grader.....is this list from one teacher or various teachers? My niece's elementary school (in Texas) just recently started having 4th and 5th graders change teachers throughout the day, I think its between 2 or 3.....actually they stay in the same room the teachers go to them.
