Thumbs down Oh my word--- the smell!!!!!!!!!!

On Sunday, I did some grocery shopping and I asked my sweet dh to get all of the grocery bags out of the car. I had hurt my back a few weeks ago, and have been struggling with it ever since.

Well, this morning, I get into the car, and I smell the most horrible smell in the world. After searching the car over, I found a bag of meat in the back!! Sweet hubby forgot a bag (And would happen to be the meat -- $15 worth!!), and the smell is unbearable!!

Besides me wanting to throttle him, what can I do to get the smell out??? I already febreezed the car, and I left an open box of baking soda in there with the windows open. Ugh!!!

Try actually sprinkling some baking soda over where the sack actually was. Let it set as long as possible and then vacuum it up.

Also, you can try putting some charcoal (the kind that isn't impregnated w/ lighter fluid) in the vehicle. It might aborb the odor.

Vinegar is also suppose to absord and dissolve odors. Try placing a couple of bowls filled with vinegar in the car. Again leaving it in their as long as possible.

You may just be destined to ride w/ the windows down for a while.

OH YUCK!!! That grosses me out just reading it. Your DH is gonna catch it, eh?!

I have heard that cat litter removes odors.

Good tips above plus a few clothespins for your noses... Sadly, it might be a while before it's gone!

My kids left 2 quart bottles of soy milk in the car a couple of weeks ago. Luckily they did not explode after 3 days in the baking sun. I sure that they were nasty in the bottles. I was mad at the cost just being thrown away!

I'm glad to hear this has happened to other people as well! LOL

Scott just left with the van-- he's going to try to clean the area in the back. Pray he is successful lest he sleep in that van tonight. ROFL!!

Put a big tub like you do dishes in full of baking soda and leave it in the car for a couple of days. Once my friend accidentally unplugged the freezer and the whole utility room smelled like death. We put the biggest container we could find in the house filled with baking soda (2 big Costco boxes) and in a few days good as new!

OMG!! . :>O Just thinking about it is almost making me gag! You might have to take the car to the carwash to have the carpets cleaned AND then leave the baking soda in and open for a while. Sorry you have this to deal with!

You can also take your car to a dealership they have an ozone machine that can get smells out of cars. I left a dozen eggs in my car once and then proceeded to go on vacation a few days later. When getting home and getting in the car there was no smell at all until.......my son kicked it our from under the seat and broke the eggs. Can you say gross? I cleaned it the best I could and took it to the dealership a few times and the smell finally came out.

There is a product out called "Kids N Pets" i would try that. I do not know if it works on rotten meat smell but it does get out the smell of cat pee.

Thanks guys. I agree with the poster about DH and I switching cars! LOL

We've tried baking soda, vinegar and febreeze. It's slowly getting better. Either that or my sense of smell just broke.

What works well, and is cheap, is get one sheet of newspaper at a time, and bunch it up, not into a small ball, but a big "fluffy" ball of paper. It will absorb the smell, and it works well in the freezer and fridge.

haynes94, I just read this tip on the Vocalpoint site and immediately thought of you:

Need to get that weird odor out of your car? Try putting some coffee grounds in a bowl with a piece of an apple (about 1/4). Keep it in there for about 24 hours. The two together will absorb just about any odor. Some car dealerships do this. Also, something easier but not as effective with really bad odors is to put dry sheets (2) under the seats for a day or so.

Nanette M

Good luck!
