Sherriff Arpaio in AZ

How do you all feel about this. I was sent this as a bulletin and reposted it as a bulletin at Myspace. Gee, it has really po'ed one of my friends. LOL He lives in Arizona and REALLY doesn't agree with this. So I was curious, how do you all feel? Am I just very strange for believing the US might just be better off if their were more authority figures like Sherriff Arpaio? Anyways here it is:

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (In Arizona) who created the 'Tent City Jail':

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them. >

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but 'G' movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then He Started Chain Gangs ForWomen So He Wouldn't Get Sued For Discrimination.

He took away cable TV Until he found out there was A Federal Court Order That Required Cable TV For Jails. So He Hooked Up The Cable TV Again and Only Let In The Disney Channel And The Weather Channel. When asked why the weather channel He Replied, So They Will Know How Hot It's Gonna ? Be While They Are Working ON My Chain Gangs.

He Cut Off Coffee Since It Has Zero Nutritional Value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, 'This Isn't The Ritz/Carlton. If You Don't Like It, Don't Come Back.'

He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails.

When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a Democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

More On The Arizona Sheriff:

With Temperatures Being Even Hotter Than Usual In Phoenix ? (116 Degrees Just Set A New Record), the Associated Press Reports:

About 2,000 Inmates Living In A Barbed-Wire-Surrounded Tent Encampment At The Maricopa County Jail Have Been Given Permission To Strip Down To Their Government-Issued Pink Boxer Shorts. On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 Degrees ?Inside The Week Before. Many Were Also Swathed In Wet, Pink Towels As Sweat Collected On Their Chests And Dripped Down To Their PINK SOCKS. 'It Feels Like We Are In A Furnace,' Said James Zanzot, An Inmate Who Has Lived In The TENTS for 1 year. ? 'It's Inhumane.'

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff ? who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: 'It's 120 Degrees In Iraq And Our Soldiers Are Living In Tents Too, And They Have To Wear Full Battle Gear, But ?They Didn't Commit Any Crimes, So Shut Your Damned Mouths!'

Way To Go, Sheriff! Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

If you agree, pass this on. If not, just delete it.

Don't believe it? Check it out for yourself!

Many of our military live in tents at different times and no AC, if it's good enough for the military then it's good enough for prisoners. I have heard stories and read articles about this sherriff and I think his ideas are great. Normal prisons have a high recidivism rate, I would be interested to see any data to see if his prisons have have made a difference in repeat offenders. Many of our own military in areas of war don't have it this good. When my DD's boyfriend was in Iraq, they had to sleep in their vehicles, or on the ground, temps higher than those listed, no phones, no internet, no electricity, 1st shower after 3 months, had to hand wash any laundry and hang it out, 2 MRE's a day, only warm water to drink. I personally don't have a problem with his way of handling things.

while I agree that having to listen to Newt Gingrich is a HORRIBLE punishment (perhaps even inhumane), I think that making them live w/o any air is also something that is completely wrong. With temps there reaching well into the hundreds, I fail to see how someone possibly suffering from heat is being "tough". When someone dies, it's ok b/c they're in jail? I don't think so. sounds like someone is rather barbaric imo.

I totally agree with this and feel that prison and jail shouldnt be a comfortable place. I would vote for him if he lived in my county.

This is SO great! I'm tired of hearing about inmate's rights being violated when they don't get to eat on time or crap like that. If this man was running for sheriff here.. he'd have my vote for sure.

I have lived in Arizona most of my life and I support Seriff Joe. I see his chain gangs working around the city often and believe it or not they all sign up for the chain gang duty. They save the tax payers lots of money. I do not feel sorry that they eat meatloaf or bologna every night for dinner. Or he took away their porno magazines, or sleep in tents in 100 degree weather. We love Sheriff Joe.

what a guy-bet he is getting a lot of heat from certain groups, but sounds like he is doing wonders for the taxpayers, and hopefully some of this will be enough to deter these inmates from other crimes once they are released.

My friend's son was involved in a drunk driving accident. He ended up in tent city for about 6 months. She'd visit him there and she said that it wasn't as bad as all the media hype -- although it was far from a resort... She fully supported what Sherriff Joe is doing and her son has not and will not return!

jaded--
I normally agree whole heartedly with you, but I don't on this subject.
We have men, women and children who haven't done anything wrong that live and suffer in the heat daily. Our military live in tents in god awful conditions.

These men and women broke the law--they deserve to suffer. They do not deserve extraordinarly good food, the don't deserve to be comfortable! If they are comfortable what incentive do they have to NOT commit crimes, what incentive do they have to make themselves better people.

I can attest to the fact that the inmates at Cummins Prison in Arkansas still pick cotton by hand, they still pick black-eye peas. They hoe rows in the prison garden. The produce that is grown is used in the prison kitchen to stretch the food dollars. They have work gangs that pick up trash by the side of the road.

Convicts NEED to be kept busy, they need work, they need discipline and restrictions. This is the only way that any person learns that their consequences have actions.

Well, I am a bleeding heart liberal (with no apologies), BUT, it pi$$es$ me off that inmates get better education, medical care and living conditions often than some of our "regular" upstanding citizen working stiffs just trying to make ends meet. We have veterans living on the streets and going without medical and dental care; working poor without 3 meals a day (even it it is bologna and meat loaf) and no free education like many many prisoners get. I cannot disagree with most of Sheriff Joe's directives...and I have heard about him for a number of years now.

I love everything Sheriff Joe does. My hubby works for him and has for almost 20 years now. He is a Lt.out at tent city right now. It's like Sheriff Joe says"if you don't like the conditions don't do the crime in his county".

I agree 100%, I was in AZ for about 23 of my 28 years and I love Sherriff Joe! I feel bad complaining to my DH who is in Iraq where he said its miserable in the heat, they need to quit complaining.

A while back there was a 60 minutes or 20/20 type show which highlighted Sheriff Joe and the tent city. Sheriff Joe was filmed touring the camp. The prisoners would come up to him, "Sheriff Joe, Sheriff Joe, I've lost 35lbs since I 've been here". "You're welcome". Whatever they say, he has a ready quip for them. He is my hero. I would love to see his recidivism rate.

How many people do you thnk live in this country without a/c? I was a Hospice nurse for 12 years. Try going into a tiny house with no a/c when it is over 100 degrees and find a old lady sweating to death (literally) in the back bedroom for days on end because neither her nor her family can afford a/c. Once all the bleeding hearts pay for her a/c, then I will worry about law breakers not having theirs. No--actually, I would want our military to have a/c first---then, maybe the tent city in-mates. IMHO

I wish more jails were run this way. I do have A/C in my house, but we do not have cable. I also do not have a nice weight room to work out in and can not afford to go to a gym. I had to pay for my education and I have to pay for my food. There are days that we eat PB&J just to save $. Dh works at afactory where many of the people have been injail or DUI, hurting someo9ne (cut off an ear ), child moslesters, ect. they have told him that there are many repeat offenders because they get 3 square meals, cable, A/C, medical, ect. Life in jail is too comfy for alot. Make it not so nice, sand see if they want to return.

I wish they treated criminals here that way. Here they get taken to jail, let out the next day and keep breaking into cars or houses or using stolen credit cards or whatever "specialty" they have decided on.

I love Sherriff Joe and I don't even know the man! I have heard of him before and totally agree that prison life most places is way too good. Prison should be punishment and work not a free college education and time to body build and run in prison gangs. Myabe if more places adopted his plan we would have less frequent offenders?

I think the Sheriff is doing a GREAT job!! I wish all jails were like this. I had heard that the Sheriff had offered to take Paris when she was going to do her jail time. (or it was offered or something, I can't remember). Poor little Paris would have really been crying if she had gone there!!!

This really needs to spread all through our country.....Jail is not supposed to be comfortable, or enjoyable, you should suffer some while you in jail, it's not like you landed there for helping an old lady cross the street!

Way to go Sheriff Joe!

I live in AZ and some things he has done are good some are not. There have been numerous lawsuits that have cost the county millions. That offsets the savings he is proporting. I think he has good intentions that are extreme and sometimes appear to be based on his ego. He loves publicity...

Ok, for those that in favor of running U.S. prison like Sheriff Joe Arpaio read about how they treat prisoners in Finland and their rate of incarceration
pseudorandom: The Finnish Prison System.
Which prisoner would you want to live by, one that did his time in a Finnish jail or Sheriff Joe jail?
