Do you have your kids start waking up earlier?

My oldest son sleeps until 8:00 or 9:00 every morning (and this is with going to bed by 9:00 each night!!! aah, the tween years). He'll have to be up at 5:45 during the school year.

I'm trying to figure out if I should start waking him up earlier in the morning just so the first week isn't a huge shock! I'll probably just ask him what he prefers but am curious about how other families do it.

I make mine go to bed earlier - closer to when they go to bed during school. I wake them up earlier than they've been getting up, but not when they'll actually get up for school. I start a few days before school starts just to try to get them back into their routine so it's not so tough those first few days of school.

We usually start doing this a couple weeks before school....

I adjust bedtimes and wakeup times 15 minutes every couple of days.......It has helped them get through the first week of school so much easier.....

Aug. 1 we start the school schedule. That gives them a few weeks to be in the swing of things. I start everything like have your clothes ready, eat breakfast as soon as they get up, brush teeth immediately after eating, just get everything done within one hour. Of course this never helps the first week but I try.

I am tired of the kids fighting but I am so sad that summer is almost over.

Yup, we start this 2 wks. before school starts. They're not asked and they don't have a choice about the matter. I start the getting up earlier first, that way they're not as inclined to fuss about the earlier bed time a couple of days later. BTW, my kids are 12 and 14. Of course, no one goes to bed this early, don't you know?!?

My son has been sleeping 11-12 hours a night over the summer... He himself is thinking of moving his bedtime to 7:30 during the school year.

I really think it must be his age and all of the growing and armpit hairs growing in (he's 12 1/2 and 5'9", yikes!). What happened to my baby!?

In the first thread, I posted that I'd let him make the decision... well, he has decided that we need to start 'practicing' getting up earlier starting next week since school starts August 6 -- two weeks.

Addison, I feel the same way about school. Bittersweet; happy and sad.

a week before school starts I'll start putting my 6 year old to bed at 8 (she goes to bed at 9 now). My 8 year old has a 9 o'clock bedtime school or summer so it won't matter and he naturally wakes up a 7:00 am every money (wish he didn't.....I'd like to sleep in LOL)

My kids go to bed at the same time year round. They do sleep in on mornings. Sometimes. My dd is still up before 7am. So I don't see that we will have any problems come time for school to start.

You all are lucky yours actually sleep in. Mine are up by 7 every single morning no matter what time they go to bed(so annoying). Now when school rolls around they will go back to complaining about waking up even though they are going to bed early and getting up at the same time they did all summer(go figure).

I used to do that, but I found it wasn't worth the aggravation and arguing over having the kids go to bed early when they're technically still on vacation. I found that whether or not they had been going to sleep a little earlier before the first day of school, they had trouble falling asleep anyway the night before because of the "jitters." Then they're so tired the first day that they end up going to bed early that night so it works itself out in no time. No matter what, that first week is always hectic!
