HELP!! Have you ever moved with out professionals?

Last year we sold our house put everything in storage and decided to travel for awhile.
We rented a Uhaul which seemed to be the cheapest and their trucks SUCKED!

Now, we have decided to moved 6 hours away....

Do you use

Uhaul
Penske
Budget ??

Looking for the best deals....basically and what your experience's were.

Thanks

Every time we've moved, we've moved without professionals. We use rentals but we do it ourselves. The last time my son and his wife moved, they rented from U-Haul and it was pouring rain, the truck leaked and lots of stuff got wet!!

Have you thought about PODS? We used UHaul last month with no problems - it was only 5 1/2 miles away. But we considered PODS. You load it up, they move it and then you unload it. Then you call them and they come take it away. Seemed pretty cool and I've seen them around everywhere.

Oh wow. I knew they did storage, but I had no idea you could use it to move. I'll have to remember that.

All the times we've moved. we packed the truck, drove and unpacked again by ourselves.
Once when we were moving, the truck broke down. It took them HOURS to come and switch the truck with a working one. Boy, were we ticked. It was a UHaul truck and even after all these years I still have a sour opinion of that experience.

I don't think we could physically do it again, and would most likely hire someone.

My neighbors used PODS. They rented for awhile after moving here and had everything separated into what they needed (had that delivered to the rental) and what could wait while their house was being built. After the house was done, they brought the POD that had been in storage. Pretty cool! If we ever move again, we'll use PODS.

When we moved here, we had a moving company do it. With small children and a lot of furniture, it really was easiest. It's not cheap though! But it was well worth the price that we paid to not have the hassle.

We've used Penske for our past 2 moves (over 12 hours away!) & they have been great. They are cheaper -- if you book it on the internet & have a AAA card!!! It was worth the cost of the AAA card just for the discount.

I don't think I'd use any other in the future.

So far, I booked with Penske. I got a 10% online discount and did use AAA for an additional 12%.
It was 600 down to 443 with unlimited mileage, I only have 2 days to load drive and unload.
Yikes, so far the best deal!

My in-laws used Penske when they moved and it was a nightmere. The first truck they got broke down before they even got to their old house and it took hours to get a new one for them to use. Once they finally got the truck, it was ok, but they were delayed for hours.

One word of caution about PODS -- if you use them, make sure you pack them very securely so nothing can move around. I know people who have used them and didn't pack them well and a lot of their items were broken because they had shifted around.

Honestly, I will never ever move again without a professional mover. We've done it both ways and also helped family members moved and it is just too much work, especially if there are a lot of steps (my brother-in-laws always choose an apartment on the top floor <ugh> and of course there are no elevators).

Thumbs up Pods

I used PODS when I moved here 2+ years ago from Vegas. It was very easy. I thought I'd only need 2 containers, but I needed 3. Book an extra because you can always cancel it (and not pay) within a certain time frame if you don't end up needing it. My packing took a little longer and they were very lenient with my various rescheduling of pick up and delivery. I really liked moving like this because I did things at my pace and I packed with the care that I needed. The machine they use to lift the PODS does shift the container so I can understand how things can get damaged.

I packed it, I locked it with my own lock and they moved it. When I used them, they needed 7 days in between pick up and delivery to the new location. This wasn't a big deal for us because we welcomed the break in between loads. I don't know if it's the same now, but for me, as long as I was within 30 days start to finish, there was no additional fees. So it would have been the same price if I took 10 days or 29 days. That was very fair to me. Had I gone over the 30 day period, I would have had to pay an additional storage fee month. With a Uhaul, I would have had to pay for every day I had it.

BTW, I was AMAZED at how much that POD could hold weight wise. In one of my PODS, I had ALL of my appliances.... Fridge, washer, dryer, slot machines, TV... basically ALL my heavy stuff - because we wanted to pack it last. It was amazing.... and you DON'T have to balance the weight when packing. The POD lifter balances it automatically.

We use Uhaul. We begin packing as far ahead of time as possible. We have at least 50 blue plastic containers and I go to WinCo and take the cereal out of the cases and neatly stack them on the shelves. The empty cereal case boxes are perfect for moving.
We hire two young men to help us. We pay them about 80 each plus dinner at an all you can eat buffet.
They do all the loading and unloading. I am the one to pack and unpack the boxes which I do a little at a time.
I use lots of newspaper and try to pack things like clothes, blankets, etc in big plastic bags that can be used to cushion furniture and other stuff.

To be honest if I could afford it I would get a POD. You have it at the old house, pack it slowly at your own pace, then have it drven to the new place and unload it at your own pace. Sigh that would be perfect.

PODS doesn't do our area

I HATE moving. We have some time before we have to, so I'm thinking I'll buy a bunch of Rubbermaid containers instead of boxes, and toss a TON of stuff.

We've used a U-Haul every time, and moved ourselves. Except when we moved out of our first apartment, we had family help (I was 6mo pregnant and was told not to help...). I'm hoping this time we can get some help, and I'll just pack and keep the kids out of the way and clean lol... let the guys move stuff into the truck.

Still have stuff in boxes from when we moved 4 years ago, think it's safe to toss?

Our moving sale (yard sale) almost brought in enough to pay for the moving company.
