Oil of Clove...ever had a reaction to it?

Ok, so I went to the dentist almost 2 weeks ago with a broken tooth. I was told I needed a crown. So they did the temporary without incident. Last night I was eating something chewy and the temp came out. So, I go back today, and they tell me that the temp is cracked and they had to make me a new temp.

When she put it in my mouth with whatever adhesive they use it felt hot and tasted nasty! The assistant said they use Oil of Cloves....what for I have NFI. The temp goes back in and I leave.

When I'm driving back to work, my cheek starts feeling weird, like I got a novacaine shot, but I didn't. Over the next hour, my cheek proceeds to swell and feel very strange. Now it's only on the side that the cap is on...so I'm guessing its some kind of weird reaction to the oil of cloves.

As of right now, 8:45 pm, my cheek is swollen like a chipmunk and the left side of my tongue is as well. I can barely talk and haven't even tried to eat!

I just took a couple Benadryl and hopefully that will take some of the swelling down. Anyone else ever have a reaction to Oil of Clove??

Sounds like an allergic reaction to me also. I believe you ought to call your dentist office and see what they say. You might need to take some more Benadryl in 4 hrs.

What's taking so long to get the permanent crown ready?

Crown

I am a Dental Hygienist
Most labs have a 10 business day turnaround time plus shipping back and forth. That would be why there is a delay in getting the permanent crown.
As far as the oil of cloves. I didn't think they used that anymore. In my 6 years of hygiene and a few years before that as front desk... i can't say I remember them using that anymore.

Thanks, it definitely got worse last night before it got better. This is an older dentist so maybe he does it old fashioned ways? I'm a bit better this morning, but my tongue is still swollen and the cheek is still puffy but not near as bad as it was. I was supposed to have an appt today for a cleaning and the perm crown may have been ready, but I think I'm gonna reschedule until all this swelling goes down. Man this sucks! Its a good thing I don't work with the public...lol

Update for anyone that cares. I was back at the dentist today, he told me it looks almost like a chemical burn inside my mouth, on the upper palate and on the left side of my tongue. ....I was like "ya think"?? LOL

At any rate, they took out the temp crown and put the perm one in, he said they use the oil of clove along with the powder adhesive as a light anesthetic. Lets just say they won't be using it on me any more!! He wanted to get the temp one out because he felt that it was still irritating my mouth and put in another temp. I told him if he was gonna dig around in there he might as well put the perm crown in. It actually feels better already! I guess it was leeching out of the temp? Who knows?!
