We've been doing a lot of college visits lately and most have moved to tying all kinds of things into the student ID....meal plan, dining dollars..and you guessed it, some even pay for washer and dryer by swiping their student ID. Times they are a-changin'! cj/ |

One could ascertain that the girl has the standard MP3 player (of some kind), portable dvd player, etc... so why not get in on the Kmart deal? You have until August 13, and it is UNLIMITED. You don't even need "other" coupons (but they certainly would lower your costs)... if you want the low down on that deal--say so, I have all the possible deals printed out ... without using coupons. For each transaction of products, you would get the items FREE plus you get yourself a $10 Kmart Gift Card (which comes in handy for you or for your recipient--your choice).

I say a roll of quarteres and gift cards. My niece would not eat anything they had at college. But she is very picky and very spoiled. But I think gift cards to Pizza Hut, Starbucks, any place like that she would love.

| They also can get soda or water from machines with student ID as long as there is money put on it. A gift card for movies would be good. You could also put money on her student ID. In some schools they can use the student ID in eating places.

Thanks everyone - The quarters sounded like a good idea, but checked and they don't use quarters....the money goes on a card. There are some great ideas here - I will let you know what I decided ![]() Thanks again!!!!!!!!

If she drives, a gas card is much appreciated these days. Another idea is two tickets for an upcoming event at or near her campus, i.e. concert, show, etc. These can be difficult on a student budget. My d/s has a Barnes & Noble on campus, and so loves getting GC for there. |

The gas card is a good idea, except students aren't allowed their cars the first year...... The B&N sounds good - will check into that

I have a different thought based on a visit from my husband's cousin's family and their college-bound daughter this week. They allowed the daughter to spend some of her graduation money on whatever she really wanted....she chose a silver heart necklace and a bracelet from Tiffanys. She was so proud of that necklance and bracelet and I can see her wearing it at school.... It was kind of nice because it's something that she will always have, but would have otherwise not been able to.... Just a thought.... cj/ |

A few more ideas... THE COLLEGIATE SHOWER TOTE While every day at college can bring with it new experiences, some things never change. College kids still need to shower. What’s different about achieving hygiene in dorms can be broken down fairly simply: The shower is not nearly as well-supplied or clean as the one back home. Suddenly a specially-equipped shower caddy has greater value than you can imagine. What follows are the basics on what you should include in this gift. For starters, you need a portable container—ideally plastic with drainage holes, several different sections and a handle. Stock the sections with the following: the graduate’s favorite soap (or yours if you aren’t sure), several washcloths or body scrubbers, shaving cream, a razor, possibly a fun lotion or two and last but not least … flip-flops. (You may want to include a kind but firm note relaying that you’ve heard from a reliable source that it is imperative to the health of their feet and toenails to ALWAYS wear these in the shared bathroom area.) SNACKS IN A CAN A couple of things that most college students conjure up on a regular basis are a fair amount of trash and a healthy, albeit late-night appetite. Why not combine these two “needs” into one playful, yet very practical gift. You can find a nice size trashcan that suits almost any personality at most retail outlets or discount stores. Once you’ve acquired the waste dispenser, make your way to a grocery store and stock up on nonperishable and, ideally, healthy snacks like trail mixes, fruit rolls or fruit leather, microwave popcorn, juice boxes, hot chocolate mix, teas, and a few indulgences. PHOTO CALENDAR There are two elements that ring true in the lives of most freshmen during their first semester at school. First is the need to keep track of the date like never before. (Those parents are no longer in town reminding them of the paper they need to finish or practices they need to attend.) The second is a feeling of homesickness. (Even if they thought they’d never feel it, it usually kicks in after a few weeks of cafeteria food and nights spent alone.) Enter the Personalized Calendar. It’s a fun solution that meets both of these needs. Why not contact a few of your closest friends and come up with 13 of your favorite pictures (one for each month, plus the cover). Then find a copy store that creates such calendars and let them take it from there. ~Lisa |

| College gift
Someone gave my son a desk organizer filled with desk supplies that was very very useful. It had a small stapler, pens, paper clips, markers index cards, tape, small scissors pushpins etc. Everything that you need to complete projects right at your finger tips without chasing down these items and having to borrow them from other students.
