Wal-Mart will have you watch an anti-union video as part of your training (or, that's how it was in 2000). I worked 3rd shift and it was a 40 hour per week job. The pay was ok but fast food restaurants were advertising similar hourly rates too, I guess it depends on the area because my brother worked at one here and he made closer to federal minimum wage. There was some amount of shift differential plus I think an extra $1/hour for Sundays, and I don't remember holidays, I managed to get them all off without asking. Also they pay a little more for cashiers, I made $7.75 an hour doing that and HATED it. Stockers (not grocery-side) were paid $7.50 starting out. I think grocery-side pays a bit more. Cashiers have to take turns at breaks, stockers go all at once. Also 3rd shift cashiers, when not busy checking people out, have to unpack boxes (seems like odds and ends, not sure where this stuff comes from) and separate them into carts and take them to the department they belong in, for the stockers to put up. At least this was how it was done in the store I worked in. You can also be sent out to the floor to help the stockers if they're short or too many cashiers for the amount of business.

Wal-Mart is decidely NON-UNION!
They, to my knowledge, do not pay a shift dif for overnight or more for Sundays (why should they?)

I know that Wal-Mart pay scale ranges from barely above minimum wage to $10-$11/hr for experienced cashiers. Heck, I know cart pushers and "May I help you" Associates who make $10/hr!

Why don't you call both companies and ask them??? I know Wal-Mart definitely isn't union. Kroger is union. Not sure about Winn-Dixie.

Good luck in your search.

at our Kroger owned stores not all employees are union, the 'older' ones who have been around for years (not necessarily older in age, but have worked there for several years) are usually union...new employees hired are not union and make less $, i don't know if this is all positions or only certain areas

the manager there, said they used to have a lot of applicants for meat dept and deli and those areas and now very few who turn out to be good workers and longterm employees..he said it is because the pay is just a bit more than minimum wage now and it used to be about twice minimum wage

Kroger in the north is Union... Kroger in the south is not really Krogers in some places, but otherwise known as Farm Fresh..those Farm Fresh stores are NON-Union.

Walmart is non-union and treat their employees badly. Winn Dixie, a southern chain of stores is also NON-Union.

Most of your "Union" stores, you will find north of the TN / KY line.

I personally work for Wal-Mart and have for the past 11yrs. Wal-Mart is non union. Everyone always says that Wal-Mart treats their employees badly but I have friends who work for other companies(retail and non retail) and they are treated no better than I am. I have no problems with Wal-Mart and yes overnights do get a shift differential and you get an extra dollar for each hour you work on Sunday(for example if you work an 8hr shift you will have an extra $8 on your paycheck). You also get experience credits for each year of experience at a previous job that had the same duties as the job you are applying forThere are opportunities for advancement if you're interested too. I myself started out as a cashier and moved around to different departments until I finally settled in as a department manager which I have been for the past 6 years. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
