uniforms or no uniforms?

my kids go to public school and have to wear uniforms.

are you for a against uniforms in school?

in one way I am for it.no hassle in the morning ,they know what they have to wear.
but the constant bickering about the uniforms from the school: not the right belt, not the right color red(one teacher send me a note that the red polo was too red ),too short, too long ,the wrong sole on the sneakers.....

my dd(13) went to a public prep school.they coudn;t wear their outerwear inside the school.they had tiny lockers, winter coats didn;t fit in them, she couldn;t keep it on the back of her chair, didn;t fit in her backpack.....so all winter long my dd went to school without a coat(ok we are in the deep south, but it can freeze here too)

Against them. Just more money to spend that we don't have.

Absolutely LOVE them. My youngest 2 wear navy pants & white shirts. I get the shirts at Kmart or Walmart for less then 5 bucks. Pants are always on sale for less then 10.00. So I can do a years worth of clothes for both kids for way under 100.00.

My oldest is gonna be a senior this year and his uniform is gray dress pants ans white dress shirts and a navy blazer. In the 3 yrs he's worn the uniform I've bought a total of 6 prs of pants at 28.00 a piece. White short sleeve dress shirts I get at JCPenney for 11.00 ea. I buy 3 of those a year. The blazer I paid 95.00 for his freshman year and he still wears it. And will finish out high school with it.

Neither of the schools require us to buy them at certain stores so I just shop around for the best deasl. It saves me a fortune on school clothes shopping. Each kid only need 3 prs of pants and 5 shirts.

don't have them and don't want to. I hate individually being squashed but I do understand the reasoning behind them. I do not think any public school should have them. Private...hey, it's your dime to go there so they can tell you what to wear but not public. I wonder if the school's who tell you what you can wear also have mandates over hair color and length???? I know some of our public schools are trying to not allow hair to have color and boys hair can't be over a certain length....absurd if you ask me for public school

we don't have uniforms, but i don't think i'd mind if we did. since i only have a son, it's not that big of a deal to me. i think if i had a daughter i'd be for the uniforms - i think some girls are more into clothes and it would probably be easier!

My goes to a uniform school and I LOVE it! Much cheaper, PLUS, the drama of who wears what is out the window. I just wish my daughter's school would go uniform too!

Love the idea of uniforms. (if I did actually send my kids out to school ;-)
It makes everyone the same, despite the way kids will find to get around general uniform rules :-)
And it makes it soooooooooooooooooo much easier to deal with the *what amn I gonna wera to school* deal that girls get into.

After what I've seen lately on children in public schools, I'm all for uniforms!

The logos/sayings on graphic t-shirts are often very vulgar, can cause fights (ala 'your girlfriend says I'm better in bed...'), and just have no business in a place of learning. This tacky 'anything goes' situation has serious impacts on the learning environment.

I'm in favor of either uniforms, or a serious dress code. If you don't believe it's gotten this bad, ask some kids, or see for yourselves. And I do believe this is in 'anytown, U.S.'

Weren't there studies a few years back which showed that kids achieve better in schools where uniforms are required? I think one of the theories was that kids took themselves more seriously as students. I imagine that would ring true!

I love uniforms. Both of the kiddo's will be in them this year and I'm excited. No more running around the house in the a.m. looking for a matching top and bottom.. just a polo, and some khaki's.

I HAVE TO AGREE WITH THIS, my kids go to public school and have to wear "uniforms" but it makes me have to spend twice the amount of money on their clothes because they still need clothes for after school and on the weekends.

My girls have been doin it for about 6 years, and I think it works. The kids still know who has the cool stuff (Abercrombie, American Eagle) but it;s still better than the other way. If you watch the sales you can keep up. I would hate to think about it the other way, kids are too mean!

My son's (private) high school has a strict dress code, but not uniforms. Slacks (no cargos), shirt, tie, belt, and sportcoat. They also have haircut and facial hair standards. I like it. It does make them a more respectful and respectable bunch (all boys) and ready to learn. It also makes them all look very comfortable in a coat and tie which will prepare them for interviews and such. Have you ever seen a guy in a suit for the first time? (I once interviewed a guy that left the label on the arm of his jacket.....LOL...but I digress). They are still able to reflect their individuality within the dress code with different colors and patterns, etc. My son has a friend who buys his jackets at the Salvation Army and picks out the ugliest ones he can find. That boy has an interesting sense of humor...

I don't have any girls and I'm likely to get myself in trouble here....but moms of teenaged girls, for goodness sakes, make sure they are dressed! I cannot get over the things that young girls wear starting at very young ages .... very distracting .....

I am wholeheartily for uniforms. I went to a private, Catholic boarding high school for my last two years because the public high school was wayyyy over extended in NH at the time and a non-Catholic slot opened up. I was poor and commuted 22 miles to school every day. But, because of uniforms, I looked like everyone else. No one at school knew that I was a poor kid and my mother had bought my white shirt at the bargain store.

I would have to do the math but I do not think one spends more with uniforms because the kids need less non-uniform clothes. And, once the initial outlay of money in the Freshman year , there are no more expenses so are those costs spread over 4 years. Of course, if a family moves in and out of a district in a short perid of time, that would be a bummer.

To those of you who say that you spend more money on clothes, maybe you can organize (or suggest to the PTO?) a 'Uniform Swap' at your school?? Our kids went to a public school that had a uniform requirement when they were younger. They had a Swap a few weeks before school started each year. It was great!!!

My son goes to public school and there is no uniforms, but I wish there were. However, there is a lot of low income at my son's school, so I doubt they would ever do uniforms, due to the expense. A lot of children (sadly) do not have clothes without holes in them or wear shoes that are too small/trashed. It is very sad. I try to donate clothes in good shape that my son does not wear or are too small for him to the office during the school year. They always have a good home for them.

I disagree. Right now, my DD has probably upwards of 15 shirts. No way would she get or need that many if she wore a uniform to school. Regular street clothes wouldn't be worn long enough after school to require washing on a daily basis. So, fewer street clothes would be needed. Plus, uniform clothes would most likely end up being cheaper in price than street clothes.

I'm all for uniforms. Some of the clothes and hairstyles that are worn to school nowadays are just downright distracting at best. There are rules in the school handbook about this. However, unless the situation gets really severe, nothing is ever done.

Our school district is switching to uniforms this year. They are NOT prepared for the switch. The requirements they set forth are not matching the "availablitiy" to the stores. Thus they are allowing more buttons on shirts, decorations on skirts, etc. They are now adding that the polo shirt can not have a peter pan collar.... thus all sorts of conflicts are coming up. I would much rather they kept with a standard dress and ENFORCED the rules they already had. I am spending quite a bit more dressing 2 kids than I ever did with the way I shop on clearance and sale racks. 17.99 for a pair of shorts.... I bought 4 pairs of Levi's at Belks for 2.48 each.

Sadly school starts back Monday. I hate having a schedule

My daughter is out of high school and in college now but she never had uniforms. But I think it would have been great. There was 3 guys who attacked and beat up another guy at a local high school cause he had on some kind of shoes that one wanted and another one of them wanted his coat. If the kids wore uniforms, that wouldnt have happened. Also, with all the crap that goes on at schools now, I think if the kids had to wear uniforms and someone who came wandering in the school and didnt have a uniform would get the attention of the staff quicker. and for the people who say that they cant afford the uniforms, go to good will. the uniforms that I have seen at some of the other schools are black/navy pants and white shirts . the good will is full of these cloths. whole lot cheaper than the name brands that kids are wearing.

Our schools have "dress code" - might as well call them uniforms. Against it. It's the government telling me how to spend my clothing money. As another poster said they still need regular clothes for after school, weekends, and holidays. They should just enforce existing rules concerning inapproporiate clothing.

I am saying this because I thought oh wow it will be so much cheaper but I will not put my children in clothes that look cheap, therefore I have to pay to have there shirts embroidered, which costs $4 per shirt (on top of the cost of the shirt) and then they can't wear them anywhere except for to school, and I just think that sucks. Unfortunately for me my kids think if they wear something (even if they only wear it for an hour) it has to be washed even if its not dirty, and they get that from my husband who won't wear anything more than once either.

Seriously....these seem like "problems" that a parent could solve, no? A cheap looking shirt (low quality) is cheap-looking whether it's embroidered or not IMO.

But I do get what you're saying that it seems like the kids need two outfits a day and that would seem like more at least from a laundry standpoint. I do think they don't need as many school outfits or play outfits, the total could remain the same.

Totally in favor. My son's school uniform just means he has to wear either navy or khaki pants and a polo in white, yellow, navy or light blue. Easy and cheap. I can outfit him for an entire year for less than $100.00 and the shirts and pants can easily be worn for outside the school.

I am for it!! I work at a school and see how they dress and especially with Limited Too and Holister brands it make kids that don't have the money feel bad!! In addition I go through the closet with my daughter to figure out what she is in the mood to wear (crazy)!! I think uniforms are the best and cheaper in the long run!
