I've been to the farm and met Matt, Zack and Grandma & Grandpa. They are the nicest people! I feel terrible for Matt and the family, and was suprised to learn this was not his first DUI. He had one a few years ago too. It was late at night, close to midnight. I wonder if he had been out to dinner and had too much wine? Anyway, he should not have been behind the wheel. I lost a 18 year old cousin to a drunk driver and don't think people should drink AT ALL if they are driving...... |

I really like Matt too. We usually watch when this show's on and he seems like a really great guy. I'm hoping this is just a case of overdoing it at dinner. I wonder what kind of hell Amy gave him at home after???? Would've totally loved to have been a fly on that wall.. |

I feel empathy for him. I really like Matt, and he probably made an unwise choice that night. It probably would not take much alcohol to impair him. I hope this doesn't affect their show on TLC in any way. It has not been on in our area for a few weeks now. Come September, hope it starts up again.

Carrie - I totally agree. I really like the show but I have no sympathy for him. He is no different than anyone else. It is complete common sense, no matter how much you've had, DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE! I'm seriously if he had of, God forbid, killed someone that night. How much sympathy would you all of had for him then. JMTCW |

I agree with Carrie He's a grown man and should know not to drink and drive, same with the others they have the money to afford a cab or use a pay phone to call family/friend

How did this jump to "He should have known better to they really should clean their house more"? Since the subject has derailed a bit, I have seen a few episodes and view them as a very real, busy family who concentrate on their children and all their activities. I think it's somewhat humorous that they're not concerned about a messy, cluttered room since they're on tv. I think it's a stretch to say it's a filthy, unhealthy environment. I suppose they could stay up to wee hours of the morning cleaning and straightening so they look more like the all-american family.

For what it's worth Lolly: Your post can be construed as very negative and mean toward others. You have stated that you feel the house is filthy and possibly a health hazard. You then go on to say that "ones description of the house depends on how one is accustomed to living." To me, that could be construed that you are implying if others DO NOT agree with your opinion of the house, then they are use to living in filth. Now, I'm SURE that is not what you meant. I'm positive that you would not want to offend or hurt anyone's feelings because you may have. If I was a real wiseacre, I would request that the moderator edit your post because it could offend those of us who see past how clean a person's house is to see the person for who they really are. But, that's just me. I don't feel sorry for the guy. He's old enough to know better. This isn't his first DUI--he had one in 2003 for which he completed a 16 wk substance abuse/awareness program. What kind of example is he setting for not only his children but for the TV audience who have grown to admire and respect him for how well he handles his disability--how "normal" the family is, even though they have faced and will continue to face huge obstacles....

I dont feel sorry for him. he is old enough to know better and like someone else said. if it was paris, everyone would be yelling about it. Just cause he is short dont make it ok to drink and drive. I happen to know another man and wife who are also very short and they too have a son who is short like them and a daughter who is not. They are not on t.v or anything and if he was caught drinking and driving, he would get hauled in just like everyone else. They dont really like the show. The lady says that they feel that they are making money off of the show just cause they are short. I watch it sometimes. I like it but I dont watch it when they come over .

I don't feel sorry for him either. This is not just a simple mistake in judgment, it's his second offense! He knows better, but obviously made the choice to drink and drive, so whatever happens is the consequence of his actions. I'm sure he'll be a candidate for after care once he finishes with his impaired driving classes. I hope he gets paid well on his TV gig, because he's probably looking at about $10K in attorney's fees, classes and fines. Works for me, and I might add that I'm really grateful that no one was killed or hurt because of his blatant disregard of the law.

How embarassing for his family. His kids really aren't that old.. I can't imagine going into school with the entire country knowing whats going on at home. He really seems like a stand up guy.. This totally throws me.. oh well.. he's only human.

Golly, a reader really has to keep up with all the threads. You never know when you'll miss a good fight. cj/ P.S. Lolly - I had no problem with what you wrote....either the way it was said or that it meandered a bit from the topic....but then I have a tendency to follow my mind wherever it takes me... |

Of course, so nice of you to be agreeable and nice! You can't please all the people all the time. So, if ANYONE finds a post offensive they should be allowed to mod alert and ask that it be removed or edited (to remove objectionable content). And furthermore, the mods should treat everyone the same across the board. I, personally, found the post as objectionable and rude. It does imply that people who don't see the house as filthy must live in filth. I would like the post edited.

Sorry, but I can't agreeable with that because as you say, you can't please all the people all the time. Rather, my opinion is that we should try to be nice, thicken our skins a bit,, feel free to express our opinions knowing full well that not everyone will agree with them, learn a little, and have fun. Lord knows that I haven't been treated necessarily fairly and have had several things deleted, one at the request of your idol(s)...but I get over it. It's a freakin' bulletin board, for heaven's sake. And hey, are you the same "nonbeliever" that PM'ed me out of the blue having a good laugh at the TLJ crowd? THings that make you go hmmm.... Whatever - carry on. nice and agreeable cj/ P.S. I believe this has a lot more to do with stirring the pot, than an objection with what lolly wrote, but I could be imagining things. |

And what difference does it make if I PM'd you at one point in time? Quite frankly, that really has no bearing on this post at all! I have no "idols" as you call them. I am perfectly capable (and I do so on a regular basis) of making my own decisions, based on my own beliefs, thoughts and the evidence at hand. Thank you for playing, we have some lovely parting gifts for you!

1) I don't feel sorry for him at all. 2) Lolly (whoever this person really is) knew exactly how snarky his/her little comment was. 2a) Who are you Lolly? You jump right in posting in May to a new board and go straight to the Cafe. Hum...kind of ironic for someone who's favorite saying is "Always be yourself, there are enough other people" Last edited by nightowlrn; 08-03-2007 at 04:52 PM. |

I dont feel in any case that drinking and driving should be labeled as a mistake. I think that it is a bad decision. If you know that you are going to be going out drinking, you should make arrangements. If you didnt plan on drinking but find yourself about to order/buy your first beverage of the evening then I think you should take a moment to make plans. It could be as simple as picking a designated driver from your group, putting cash aside to pay for a cab or buying your alcohol to take home and consume it there. The fact that the person in this case seems like a nice family guy doesnt change how I feel about his drinking and driving. I am sure that the family of the person/persons that he could have hurt wouldnt care if he was on TV or nice either. If it is true that this is not the first time he has had a DUI, he certainly should have known better, and I feel he deserves some time in jail.

I haven't read the TMZ article or heard much more about Matt's incident than what was reported on all the stations the night they apparently got wind of it. Was he alone in the vehicle? Out that late alone? Kinda makes you wonder if there is much more to this story. Does it say why he was in the bar/restaurant (business meeting, drinking alone, etc.)? I guess I'll go read the article and see what is actually says. With all of the deaths due to drunk driving and all of the awareness to the issue these days, it really does amaze me that anyone that isn't an alcoholic (I say that because I know that untreated alcoholics basically can't control their drinking once they start--I'm not saying it's right of course) actually gets behind the wheel after they've had even one drink. Even if you know you 'aren't legally drunk' after one drink, I'd still be afraid of being pulled over and going to jail or having to explain myself to a cop at the least. Of course the fear of harming anyone else on the road, myself or my own family is enough of a deterent for me also. I'm not an alcoholic so I don't know what goes through their minds or how they think though. I wonder what this news will do to the show, as I feel that a majority of the show portrays the Roloffs as major overachievers (I think a lot of viewers even see them as role models but of course the Roloffs have no control over what people think of them or how viewers see/feel about them and probably didn't sign up for the show to be portrayed as role models). I am personally amazed at what they have accomplished in their lives/on the farm (I grew up on a farm and know first hand what a huge job it is/how difficult the work is for people of normal size, much less being little). They do come across as a very straight forward family, telling it like it is, so I wouldn't be surprised if the first episode back has something about the incident in it. Then again TLC may just cancel it. If you go to the Roloffs website and look, there is a very large discussion about Matt's DUI. |
