No offense, AiA, but the answer should be a number, not a letter. LOL
Anyways I voted "a" or 10 using what I recall of operator precedence rules. Could be wrong - especially since at the moment, I'm the only 1 of 8 that voted that way.

Well heck. I guess I could be looking like an idiot but I used the order of operations which is PEMDAS.

So... I did the multiplication first and then did the addition.

Do I get a prize? Is 6 right?

If it isnt I may have to go back to my math teacher from last semester and return my A.

None taken........I tried to "edit" my poll, and couldn't. But, apparently, you all figured to just scroll down a bit, right????

Mods, HOW do you edit when you do a poll????

The problem is not complete.

You need brackets to tell us whether it is:

(2+2)X2=

Or 2+ (2 X2)=

The way you have it posted either 6 or 8 could be the right answer.

Looks like you have takers to the poll once people woke up for the day. Some of us need to sleep at night and then have a cup of coffee before thinking.

Finance guy says 6

multiply first, then add.

Did I ever tell you I got 770 on my math SAT's?

I also got 300 on English. I ain't good at that.

I also voted for "6" because you would do multiplication first before addition. If you wanted the answer to be "8", the parenthesis would need to be around "2+2".
As my DD always says "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" to remember order of operations...P~parenthesis, E~exponents, M~multiply, D~ divide, A~ addition, S~ subtraction.

BINGO! I was just going to post a note about Aunt Sally. It's the one thing I did learn after flunking algebra three times. Seems ironic I do accounting work for a living, eh?

NO, here is where I got my info:

Drexel dragonThe Math ForumDonate to the Math Forum
Ask Dr. Math: FAQ
Order of Operations

_____________________________________________
Dr. Math FAQ || Classic Problems || Formulas || Search Dr. Math || Dr. Math Home
_____________________________________________

What is the correct order of operations? Why use it? What is PEMDAS?
The order of operations in which one is to interpret a mathematical expression such as "2+3 * 5" is a convention. This means that a long time ago, people just decided on an order in which operations should be performed. It has nothing to do with magic or logic. Some people decided to adopt a way, and it has stuck ever since. It just makes communication a lot easier.

Another way of saying this is that rather than being inherent in the structure of mathematics, the concept of "order of operations" is a matter of mathematical notation. Order of operations refers to which operations should be performed in what order, but it's just convention. The notation tells you which operations to do first, not something about the underlying mathematics.

To remember the conventional order of operations, you can think of

PEMDAS
(You might remember this as "Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally.")1

1. Parentheses
2. Exponents
3. Multiplication and Division
4. Addition and Subtraction

This means that you should do what is possible within parentheses first, then exponents, then multiplication and division (from left to right), and then addition and subtraction (from left to right). If parentheses are enclosed within other parentheses, work from the inside out.

1Some people are taught to remember BEDMAS:
Brackets
Exponents
Division and Multiplication, left to right
Addition and Subtraction, left to right

Here are two examples:

3 + 5 x 7 = ?
3 + 5 x 7 = 3 + 35 = 38

(1 + 3) x (8 - 4) = ?
(1 + 3) x (8 - 4) = 4 x 4 = 16

I got this info. here:

http://mathforum.org/dr.math/faq/faq...perations.html

So, the answer would be 6

You crack me up! I think I have a slight advantage being in school right now. I can not be sure that I would have remembered to use the order of operations if I had not just be exposed to math and algebra stuff in the past year.

I agree I thought from what I remembered that if there are no brackets then you do the first problem thus first you do 2+2 then you times that x2 thus the answer would be 8.

No, you always do the multiplication and division in the problem first (if there are no parens, that is), then proceed from left to right.

Me too... especially when the reasons for the correct answer are given.

It reminds me of the time that we had a poll going for who was the father of Danilynn (I think it's how you spell it? Anna-Nicole's baby...). People kept voting even after the DNA test results came out. AND they got it right! Cracked me up!

Wrong - every time someone votes on it, the thread is brought to the top. Any other questions?

Well have you thought maybe it was people that opened up the thread and wanted to answer the poll and did'nt read everyone's response 1st?

One more time for those having difficulty comprehending - what struck me as funny was that the answer and the reason for it was described with references and people still kept voting.

And I have no idea what YAFAWB means...you are a fat a$$ white b!tch???
Well, not really - white and b!tch, yes. fat a$$, um, no.
