I'm having a problem with my Amazon credit card, any ideas?

I got my bill last month and they had raised my intrest rate to like 18%, something crazy like that. So I called them up and asked if they would lower it, I always pay on time, my credit score is over 800 and they said flat out NO. They were SO rude, I was really mad. So I transferred the little balance and cancelled the card.

I get my final statement and I had enough points to get another Amazon $25 gift certificate. So I call and they said no I don't get them because I cancelled the card, I gave up those points. First of all they never told me that. They automatically send them when I have enough, I don't ever have to request the certificate, so how was I to know I needed to before I closed the account? And I earned them before I closed it, I should still be entitled to them?

I even talked to a supervisor who was just as rude, I honestly could not believe how mean they were to me.

Does anyone have any other ideas? I want what was mine, how can they change the rules and not tell me? And Amazon didn't care, they said it's Chases issue, not them.

Can you have them reinstate your card so that you could get your GC and then cancel later?

You know I didn't ask that because I was so mad I didn't want to give them any business. I honestly was so shocked at how rude they were I couldn't believe it, even the second time I called. That might be worth asking I am determined to get my $25 now.

Find an executive's address and write a letter? Planetfeedback.com? Be sure to complain about the rudeness

Forgot to add... it's possible they could have done a periodic review of your credit report and saw something they didn't like? Increasing balances with other creditors, new inquiries and accounts, etc...

Not to be pessimistic or anything, I really really doubt that that would work. I think she's basically going to be unable to get the GC now. I hope I'm wrong but I've been dealing with a couple of companies on behalf of my DD who is in the army in Iraq right now and they don't even care about that.

Are you kidding? What a country we live in! I am sorry it's that way for you and your DD.

Flipper I wish I could help. I don't have any credit cards and don't know how that all works but it sure does stink!!!

This is what I was going to mention. If there has been any influx on your credit report or new accounts opened, etc, they CAN raise you rate. It's in the tiny tiny print. It's also in the tiny print that if you cancel your card before you get your rewards, you forfeit them. I have the Amazon card and I remember reading something about this when they switched from Nextcard to Chase (yes, I've had it since it's beginnings...). My interest has always been 14.99% which sucks BUT I never pay interest...just pay in full each month SO *I've* never had to deal with them except for when I am protesting a charge (and I've never had a problem with them with that).

Sadly, most financial companies (credit cards, banks, etc) ARE rude, especially if you cancel your card. The only reason I have the Amazon card is that it's my business card so I get $50 to $100 a month in rewards (that buys gifts throughout the year). I'm sorry you lost your GC That bites. I lost some of mine when they switched from Nextcard to Chase. You used to have to go in and order your GC's and basically NC went under I think and if you hadn't cashed out, you lost all your balance. It bit big time. I lost about $200 in GC's because I hadn't cashed out so I know how you feel. Glad it's automatic now

Excellent points.

It's so important to read the terms of the agreement on those credit applications.
Also do a little research on credit card companies. I remember PBS did an excellent story on them; discussing such matters like the interest, finance charges and rates. Also the card reps discussed how they love the customers that carry balances. The ones who pay in full are not so profitable. So, if at all possible, try not to carry over a balance.

I'm sorry you were treated so rudely. That had to make the situation worse.

Edit: Found it.
---> frontline: secret history of the credit card: eight things a credit card user should know | PBS
There is also a video portion that I think is worth watching.

OP this might be pertinant to your situation:
Quote:
[...] Tucked into the fine print that people so often ignore is a clause that allows a company to change your interest rate (APR) at any time, for any reason, as long as they give you 15 days' notice.

Hmmm, I had exactly the opposite experience with Amazon. I called to question the interest rate, and they lowered it immediately. The customer service rep couldn't have been nicer, wanting to know if there was anything else she could do for me.
Now Bank of America, that's a totally different story.
