school supplies

So, how much did you actually spend on school supplies for your child?

We have a 2nd grader and 4th grader. We spend roughly $75 for their school supplies. That includes 2 new lunch boxes and one new backpack (4th grader's is still in good shape!).

And are you brand loyal on school supplies or not?
We only buy Crayola markers, colored pencils and crayons. No other brand will do!

I'm brand loyal on some things. Like Crayola, the other crayons, markers, etc. aren't very good and since you can find Crayola for about the same price, we stick to those.
I have no idea what I've spent on supplies as I've bought a little here and there, when things were on sale. I've also bought extras of some things, like glue, pencils, erasers, paper, folders, etc.....they were on sale and it never hurts to have more than you need, we'll use them at some point.
I did buy 3 new lunch boxes, 1 for each girl plus an extra in case they forget to bring one home, 2 new backpacks and most of the supplies on their lists. I have a 2nd and 4th grader. Some things on the 2nd graders list seemed extreme or unnecessary to me so I didn't purchase it. I guess I'm rebellious, LOL.

We are brand loyal, but begrudgingly so!

Our school requests crayola. So while I'd be just as happy with Rose Art, I don't want my kid's art work to look any less vivid than her classmates' work.

What really bugs me is that 2 years in a row now, the teachers haven't just asked for "Crayola" crayons and colored pencils, but actually request the TWISTABLE version of each! Isn't that annoying?

I have done well, though. Between Staples and Target, I've stayed well under budget - less than $30.00 per kid, including new backpacks.

OK...that is just a bit much!

It's been my experience with the twistables that they tend to break off (especially with the younger kids who don't get the whole "you only need to twist a little bit out" yet.)

The ONLY thing we didn't buy was on the 4th graders list--2 containers of Lysol wipes were requested (ummm--you got CLorox wipes, I had a coupon! ) and a container of anti-bacterial wipes. Now, I have to assume that the teacher is wanting a box of baby wipes, but it just isn't clear.

2nd graders list only had ONE box of Kleenex. Nothing else in the way of cleaning supplies--I found that odd.

(oh and the 4th grader's list indicated NO ROSEART--but I like the smell of Crayola crayons anyway. Yes, I sniff crayons! )

Both kids are in jr. high this year so the supplies list is short and sweet. Last year the school tried the 3 inch binder to help keep the students organized. The binders just don't hold up. So this year we're using the canvas, zipper binder. Since the stores don't stock a lot of these, I bought early. Last week the binder was on sale so I took my receipt in for a price adjustment of $8.68!! No backpacks needed and my kids brown bag their lunch. It's only basics needed. I have only 4 highliters left from last year so I'll need those. I bought a case of notebook paper last year and still have enough left for this year. DD bookcovers are worn out from two years use and we bought those Friday for $1. each and that was the really nice ones. They were marked 2/$4.48 but rang up (get this ) #1 $2.99, #2 $2.99, #3 - $2.99, #4 $1. Go figure!! Calculators are provided by the school district. I'm waiting for Pentel automatic pencils to go on a terrific sale. In looking through my school supplies box, I've still got 24 ct. boxes of Crayola crayons and colored pencils left and a bottle of glue. I guess I'd better pick up some glue sticks as there's always classroom projects and the teacher usually doesn't have enough glue sticks.

We buy the box kits from the school.

$15 dollars each for 2nd and 5th grade

$18 for one backpack

$13 for the other.

Their lunch boxes are still good.

So what's that? $61 So that is not to bad.

3rd grader is reusing last years backpack and the supplies cost about $15 or so (on sale and brand name including tissues)

1st grader needs a backpack that I haven't bought yet but I've spent about $10 in her supplies (again on sale and brand name).

I picked up folders and pencils (the most requested and quantity filled items for us) for .01 at Staples

At $.05 difference between Crayola and RoseArt, I bought Crayola

I don't know how much I've spent. Backpacks are being re-used, since my grandparents gave them each a backpack with their name embroidered on the back, plus I washed my daughter's first one from last year, and if that wasn't enough, she got a free one at our 4th of July celebration!

My mother is buying the kids some shoes and clothes so I really didn't buy them much except socks and underwear, got my son a couple t-shirts and found my daughter a pair of shorts and a shirt on clearance. Still spent $50!

Have not bought paper towels, headphones, germ-x, I think that's pretty much all I'm lacking from the generic school list. We're not planning on staying here through the school year, maybe not even the semester, so maybe I won't buy them.. lol

Go to Wal-Mart and they're there for everyone to view because the schools have faxed them over. Plus, it's posted on the schools website.

I'm buying Roseart this year. Last year someone kept stealing dd's crayons and we wound up going through 30 packs of 24 crayons. They can have the crappy crayons..

I have a high schooler this year so no supply list for me! A few pens, pencils, notebooks and paper. Done! I do stock up on those things, but did so well last year, no need to this year.

We get our list the week before at the elementary school on meet the teacher day. You can pick one a generic one for DD's school at Walmart now though. I picked one up today from there but I'm not going to pick up much on it except for the folders and notebooks. Last year we went by that list and when we went to the meet the teacher day- it was only half of the list.

I detest Roseart! They stain clothes (unlike crayola which I've had great luck coming out). We get the school supply list at the end of the previous school year. Plus, Office Max has them as well.

I think I spent less than $19 so far and we have everything we need, granted my kids are in preschool and kindergarten. I got everything at Staples and Walmart when it was .05 and .20 each. I still need to get them other things, shoes, etc.

Listed on website but also sent in home the last week of school.

The best thing on my 4th graders list is 144 sharpened pencils. I think they are crazy if they think I am going to sharpen them. I know you can buy them already done but they aren't cheap.

That is INSANE! There are only 180 days in a school year. How in the world are you going to need a new pencil every 1.25 days?? How about a doaen pencils and a small pencil sharpener to keep at their desk?? Sounds like the teacher does not want to be bothered with having pencils sharpened in the room. I would flat out refuse that purchase.

LOOKING FORWARD TO A GREAT YEAR !!!

OK this year wasn't as bad as most in the past, but I still hate the fact we are asked to buy brand names and our children MUST share with classmates.we "try" to buy just whats being requested by the Teachers, however, when it comes to paying 4.99 for 15 PRE SHARPENED PENCILS I'm drawing the line at that !!!, So Sorry, But NO WAY !! THATS 19.96 for darn Pencils !!
I don't buy the name brand tissues either,. Sorry a tissue is a tissue, it gets used and tossed
I'm SHOCKED this year over the 409,Baby Wipes, Dry Erase Markers and Antibacterial wipes, this has never been requested in the years past from parents (or at least not in my Children's classrooms ).
I can't get whats my 6th grader will need as the Teacher's didn't have the list the day we had to sign her up for the classes ( she changes classes 7 times from here on out ). So really don't know whats on the list form each Teacher till the 10th, BTW School starts on the 9th, ACK means we will be paying FULL prices for more than half of her supplies I can see this coming now.
I wish wish wish they did like I have seen other schools do which is do a Bundle PACKAGE for each grade usually it's the PTO that does this, but they have never offered it in our Schools as of yet !!.

OMG, I SWEAR TO YOU ON THIS, In each package we got with the Supply list and the Teacher they are getting this year was a FUND RAISER PAGE SELLING COKES !! I SWEAR TO YOU ON THIS !!, School takes in on the 9th Forms are due back in on the 13th !! we got the packages in the mail almost 10 days ago. !! can you believe this ???

Amounts are apx.

FIRST GRADE SUPPLY LIST
2007-2008

1 JUMBO book sock (NOT ONE SIZE FITS ALL), available at BCP office ......NO CLUE AS OF YET, MAYBE $5
4 packs Crayola brand crayons (24 count).....$ .50 EACH
1 pack construction paper (loose sheets, no tablets).....$2
1 pair scissors (Fiskars for Kids).....$2
1 (4 oz. Only) bottle of Elmer’s glue.....$1
2 marble backed, hand sewn, composition books.....$ .50 FOR BOTH
4 large pink erasers.....$2
6 Elmer’s glue sticks.....$4
1 Crayola washable markers (8 basic colors).....$1
1 yellow highlighter.....$2 (FOR A SET OF TWO SINCE I'M SURE SHE'LL FORGET THE CAP AT LEAST ONCE THIS YEAR!)
1 pack (150 sheet) WIDE RULED looseleaf paper.....$.25
1 folder (2 pocket with prongs).....$2 (CAUSE WE GOT THE PLASTIC FOLDER)
1 pack of 4 x6 index cards (no lines).....$1
3 manila file folders.....FREE (HAD THEM FROM LAST YEAR)
1 pkg. #2 pencils (real wood-12 pencils in a pack).....$3 (GOT 2 10 PACKS SINCE THEY DIDN'T HAVE ANY 12 PACKS - AT LEAST THEY'RE SMELLY PENCILS!)
1 activity/coloring book for rainy days (no larger than ½ inch thick).....$1
1 pack baby wipes.....$1
1 large box of Kleenex (Aug.), 1 large box of Kleenex (Dec.).....$3 (CAUSE I GOT THE BIG BOXES WITH THE EXTRA BTFE)
1 box Ziploc bags (girls-gallon size, boys-quart size).....$2
1 large roll paper towels (girls only).....$2 (CAUSE THEY HAD TO HAVE CARTOONS ON EM!)
1 – 12 oz. bottle of Germ-X (boys only).....FREE (CAUSE I HAVE A GIRL!)
1 mesh school bag.....FREE (USING THE SAME ONE FROM LAST YEAR, YAY!)

$25.00 supply fee to purchase other items needed throughout the remainder of the school year. CASH ONLY

SO...About $40 for the supplies plus the $25 for the supply fee = About $65.

That would've been the end of it, but this year she grew out of her school uniforms. So I dropped another $103 at the uniform store. But trust me, they're worth every penny. My DD's uniforms lasted her 2 years before she grew out of them. And that was after my friend that gave me the uniforms DS wore them for 2 years. Very much worth it to me. They won't hold stains and the don't fade at all! I love them! The cost was a little more than I had hoped, but DD's request for the year was more skirts and a dress. Far be it from me to stunt her desire to be fashionable through wearing uniforms!

So that's about $168 for me...thank GOD I only have one!

Those binders are killers. My 8th grader needs 3....2-1.5" and 1-3"....and if you want it to last, you really have to go with the $10 ones....the ones with the rings on the spine just don't last in my experience.

I dont know yet what they need this is their first year at these schools, have been to big lots and bought folders with braids, 70 sheets notebooks, pens for grading, I still have a supply box though it's still in the backroom unpacked yet, I have pencils Oh bought filler paper for both boys college and regular. I label the boys things and i'd never send in more than a few things at a time, the boys get like 5 pencils in their backpacks at start of school and come back to the box when they need more. dont have the money for buying stuff for other kids that seem to "eat" their stuff

Got2save, I really like your list and I agree I do get pissed off on the things that go in box to share because we all know that there are some that do not bring in the items.

Here is the link to my kids school but the teacher always adds to the list on the first day of school.

The last couple of years I've been lazy and bought the prepackaged supplies from the PTA. I have found that there are some things in their package that are "cheap" stuff that I wouldn't buy, especially the tissues they put in there. I also buy extra supplies when they're on sale at the stores. I only buy Crayola crayons...they really are better. It's annoying to go to restaraunts where they have the cheap crayons...even the kids complain. LOL
Oh, yea...I label everything! Even the construction paper packs. I know some teachers have asked that each crayon/pencil/marker be labelled so if they get dropped or left sitting around, they'll know whose it is.

I also buy extra supplies when they're on sale at the stores. I only buy Crayola crayons...they really are better. It's annoying to go to restaraunts where they have the cheap crayons...even the kids complain. LOL
Oh, yea...I label everything! Even the construction paper packs. I know some teachers have asked that each crayon/pencil/marker be labelled so if they get dropped or left sitting around, they'll know whose it is.

peapie
we aren't allowed to label anything. Anything with a label will either be not accepted or the label will be removed. All supplies are for everyone...not just your kid which I understand may be easier to keep track of BUT it annoys the crap out of me

I don't have little kids anymore and when I did, they didn't heve the huge lists that they do now.
What i'dike to know is........... what do the teachers do with the leftover stuff at the end of the year?
Do the kids each get a pair of scissors to take back home?
There must be lots of partially used containers of Kleenex and wipes, crayons, pencils, etc. left.
Where does it all go?

Everything that was left over last year was returned to us on the last day of the year.

I hate to be blunt - but that really seems like a stupid system!! What the heck are people going to do with a bunch of oddball supplies?? AM I crazy or is that wasteful? Makes a lot more sense to monitor supplies and send out a note for the common items - tissues, paper towels, pencils, etc - as they start to dwindle....

You can see by my sigge that I am brand loyal to Crayola....Roseart is just has a weird coloring. This detest for me started when I was doing "colors" with my 2 year old (who is now 10) I am showing her the Purple RoseArt crayon and she starts to say purple, purple, purple and then she draws with it an dits blue!!! How do you teach a child when the colors aren't true.....I guess they could be alot better now than from 8 years ago but, I am sticking with crayola. The prices really aren't much different anyway!! So thats my crazy brand loyal story!!

I spent about $8 out of pocket for both my boys. Most of this was for Crayola washable markers. The rest came out of my stockpile and stuff I bought for 75% off last year (the school posts the supply lists on thefair web site, so I always print out the next grade and buy all the stuff in September when it's 75% off at Target.

DS#1 needs a new lunchbox, but I told him he'll have to use the old one until they go on clearance. He picked out 4 that he liked and listed them for me in order. Then when they get clearanced I'll get what I can for him (he is 7 and perfectly fine with this). I know he'll need a new backpack next year, so I'll buy one when they are cheap this year and put it up.

This year I was smart, I labeled most of hDS#1s stuff. Last year, his teacher told us not to label anything and then took it all, mixed it up, handed it out randomly and THEN wrote the child's name on the stuff she gave them. My DS didn't get the good Crayola markers or Fiskars scissors I bought -- he got the cheap stuff. I was furious. So this year I figured I'd avoid that problem by labeling things that I felt should be just for him (binder, crayons, colored pencils, markers, etc). We met his teacher today and I told her I did that and it didn't bother her one bit. Hopefully this year will be alot better than last year.

What gets me is that the school wants paper towels, tissues, zip loc bags, hand sanitizer, Chlorox wipes, liquid soap etc. -- basic supplies. Isn't that what my taxes are paying for? What on earth are they going to do with 34 boxes of tissues and 34 containers of Cholorx wipes (each child had to bring 2)?

I am a brand snob for school supplies, but only becasuse the good ones seem to last longer which in the long run saves me money. I follow the sales, so the name brands don't cost me that much more than the cheap ones.

If nothing is labeled, how do they know who brought what?

I ask for as much as I can now (my list is prob 1/2 of what most of you post here), because once school starts, usually nothing else will be sent to school. Some parents will replace things, and will occasionally send in wish list items, but I try to stock up for the year in August.

I would flat out refuse that purchase.
I teach 7th and 8th grades - and MANY kids go through a pencil every day.
They lose them, they break them, they use up the eraser and throw out the rest of the pencil.

I don't specify how many pencils the kids need to buy on our supply list, but I do remind parents that the kids go through a LOT of pencils, and that they'll never be as cheap later in the year as they are now on sale.

It holds the whole class up when a kid can't find a pencil to write with, and it happens more often than you'd think.

Nicest present a parent ever bough me was a case of pencils for the classroom!

RealCranky and AirborneArmyWife and any other teachers - I'd like to stock up on sale items so that I'm prepared to help throughout the year without breaking the bank....what items do you go through most often and constantly need re-supply for? I hear pencils.....tissues and paper towels are another that seem to be often requested.....what else would be good to have on hand to help out the teachers and classroom? This would be for 8th grade....

Kleenex! We always run out about halfway through March, and there are a LOT of colds left!

I agree w/ kleenex. OMG- In Jan-March, we go through a box every 1-3 days. It is awful! It isn't even that the kids are wasting it, they just need to blow constantly due to sickness & allergies.

I counted today, and out of 18 kids, I asked for 2 boxes per child, and have received about 15. Most of those are the smaller 80 count boxes as well. Guess who is buying a ton of kleenex this year lol.

Kleenex it is, then! Too bad they aren't likely to be a big part of the back-to-school markdown, unless I can score some of the seasonal multipacks.....will have to keep my eyes open. Maybe some of the disinfectant wipes, too.

I'm thinking my DSs are pencil sharpener hogs because they always notice when the electric sharpener is missing or broken in their classrooms and ask that we pick one up for their teachers. I guess with all those pencils, it stands to reason that the sharpeners would get good workouts!

I'm brand loyal to crayola, and will buy nothing but......Mom has her own box of crayons for when she colors...(love to color with the kids) 4 kids 2 in middle school this year, 2 in elementary and supplies cost about 240 dollars. We only bought one backpack and no lunch boxes, and will still be sent home seperate teacher lists for those in middle school. Most of the expense for us was binders, they were very specific about kind, and they cost us around 20 bucks a pop. That did not include cost for PE uniforms, or normal uniforms either......I will probably break down and buy them new backpacks once Target marks them down. The most absurd thing on our list was 13 boxes of Kleenex for one class.

I finally got my son's school supply list (and his classroom list - they were both posted in windows outside of the school).

His list is :

12 pencils
pencil box
colored pencils, crayons, OR markers
pencil sharpener
2 large erasers

1 bottle of glue
1 glue stick
2 boxes of kleenex
2 Expo (ONLY EXPO) markers
college ruled paper (A LOT!)

1 pair inexpensive headphones
1 spiral notebook
1 1/2" - 2" 3-ring binder
1 highlighter
1 package of dividers for binder

DO NOT BRING scissors or ruler - teacher will supply.

The most expensive things were the binder, headphones, and expo markers. I finished up the shopping for school supplies last night as I still needed the binder, headphones, and dividers. For this area, that is an awful lot of supplies. A lot of people in this area have 3+ kids and are low income. I will be sending extras throughout the year for sure. I shop sales, plus had stuff leftover from last years sales, so I estimate that I spent around $30-$35 for supplies. And they should last the entire year, with the exception being kleenex, which I will send a few more boxes of in January (my son goes through it like water as he always gets a lot of colds, allergies, etc in the winter - I have heard that children with Autism are more succeptable to them....)

We are all ready for school now! School starts on Sept. 4th!
