Why Not to Use Coupons

I was reading another forum and stumbled across this. I found it rather humorous. To each his own, I guess!

"Although getting only encouraging information is great, it can be equally rewarding to have some of the reasons NOT to do something. When I had plenty of money, could afford mistakes or most anything within reason, I couponed for years on end as a hobby, making about $.75/hr. and accumulated so many products I really could NEVER have used up before they expired. I was a sucker for cleaners, and lotions, etc.

I advise you to just stick to a few coupons and don't get carried away in the habit/addiction of it. You and your family will be happier in the long run..."

True confession time....I'm addicted and happy. And, my family is happy

That is absurd.. She /he could of donated the stockpile to people in need or even neighbors..I am finding with gas and stamps and everything else going up people are becoming more and more appreciative of a bagfull of groceries. I try to give away a bag a month on freecycle so I don't have stuff going bad..

Our food bank is soooo bare! They said that the number of families in on food night has gone up from the low 70's to the high 80's. They got a huge grant for $10,000 in June too! Now THEY need to learn to stretch that $10,000 using coupons -- but it's too late , foods already dwindling. Needless to say, I take any and all that I get that we don't need within a few months straight to them.

If she was only getting 75 cents an hour for couponing, then she wasn't a big-timer... LOL. She needed to re-evaluate -- get less lotions and cleaners and concentrate more on foods.

That said, I do not coupon anywhere like I used to. I mainly do it during the school year because I can't/won't drag the kids around with me during the summer.

Another example of ignorance at work. Just because the writer lacks the common sense to buy only what will be used or what is needed and the thought never crossed their mind to give the stuff to someone else does not mean that what she was doing was worthless it just means she was not doing it right.

Personally I agree with the sentiment expressed in the quotation. It is definitely possible to spend too much time and energy in couponing and shopping - time that could be more beneficial spent on family and/or other pursuits. It can be a sort of addiction and I think too much effort and attention given to any one part of a person's life is generally not good; whether the items can be donated or not. But that's just MHO. If you're running around to every Target in your state to get 100 glade apple cinnamon candles at 90% off, I personally think that's a shame....

I think the quotation and annadrose are actually saying the same thing.....do it right, don't do it as an addiction.

Exactly! I went to Shorite and with triple coupons this week, I MADE at least $20 on the one trip, plus had 16 bags of groceries? It's not a ton of money, but it filled some shelves up for the winter when I can't afford to grocery shop.

Which ShopRite do you go to? Mine had the triples but they weren't tripling to less than free. If I used a .50 on a .99 bottle of ketchup, I got the ketchup for free but I didn't get an extra .51.

I didn't get too much overage (once in a while I did), but I had $30 in SHoprite coupons print out and I had a rebate for $10. I paid about $18 for everything, but after all of that I made money.

I have to agree with the quote. This summer I quit couponing so much (mostly becasuse the kids are home and I just don't have the time to do it or the patients to shop with the kids with me). I sold most of my stockpile at a yard sale this spring and it is so nice not to have the shelves packed with stuff. I have actually saved quite a bit of money, my house isn't so full of all kinds of stuff that we'll never use up before it expires and we are eating a lot healthier (so much less junk food in the house). I now only buy what we need, when we need it. I still use coupons sometimes -- like if I know we'll need something soon and I have a coupon for it or it's on sale and I am going to store already. However, I'm no longer going to run around trying to match coupons and sales, clearance, etc.

I do donate a lot to our church's food pantry so don't worry -- nothing goes to waste or expires. However, it's still a lot of work to 'save' the money and then take the donations where they need to go.
