We have 20min. lunch and 20 recess with 5 minutes moving time for the whole school. 5th through 8th has a 10 min. break in the morning (to go to the bathroom and eat a snack and talk in the classroom). k-4 go outside for 15 min, in the morning and snack later. We go to school from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.

We are in a school district that has very high test scores, but not a whole lot for elementary school kids to do. No music, art or any other elective-type classes available. It is sad! Elementary in our school district has one 10 min. recess and one half hour lunch each day. PE is 20 miniutes twice a week. Ridiculous! Middle School has 30 minute lunch--no recess but 5 min. passing time between classes (large campus with 1400+ students so classes could be far between) and 50 min. P.E. daily. High School here is on a block schedule, which is 4 Classes a day with each class lasting 1hr. 50min., and a Semester in the block schedule equals a "regular" year. So the kids take four classes twice a year. PE in high school is only required in 9th and 10th grades.

Our kids hang outside on the playground before school starts. They have a morning and afternoon recess. They also have PE, every other day, this year they alternate between PE & Tech (6th grade) last year they alternated between PE then art the next day, then PE, then music the next day, so they got twice as much PE as art and music. In addition to regular PE the 5th & 6th grade can also play on the school basketball team (all the small town schools around here have grade school basketball teams and they play other schools) gets them into the routine for junior high and high school.

We get a 20 minute morning recess and a 40 minute lunch/recess period. K-3rd do not get P.E. unless the teacher has time in the very strict curriculum that is mandatory. Last year I only found time to take my students to P.E. on Fridays because I skipped a few things sh!! don't tell.

DS is entering 7th grade. When he was in 4th grade (elementary k-4) there was a 20 min. recess in the morning, PE 2 or 3 days a week and that was it. Lunch was only 30 minutes and the duty aide wouldn't take them outside. In middle school (5-6) there wasn't recess. PE was 2 days a week 1 semester and 3 days a week the other semester. Lunch was 30 minutes and if they ate quickly after standing in line for sometimes 15 minutes they were able to go outside for 5-10 minutes. If they took their lunch they were the first ones out for about 15 minutes. I believe students need the unorganized playtime. Not necessarily PE either. PE is good, however, I think they need time to play and do as they please. |

My DS's elementary school has one recess every day for all classes. I think it's either 30 or 45 minutes (can't remember from last year). The time varies by class -- last year DS had lunch, then 20 minutes in the classroom, recess, specials (art, music or PE), then 15 minutes in the classroom before dismissal. He has 45 minutes of PE on a rotation -- 4 days of PE, 2 days or Art, 4 days of PE, 2 days of Music........ I would be going to the school board if they tried to cut out recess -- kids need time to run around and unwind! DS goes to school from 7:45 - 2:15 (he gets on the bus at 7:15 and is dropped off at 2:30pm) Sarah..........mom to Jason & Devin |

The OP was calling it recess because it's playtime before school starts. Depending on what time your child gets to school, he/she may or may not have time to play before the bell rings. What do your children do when they get to school and it's not time for school to start? |

| Kids ride the bus to school. Buses and parents are to drop off kids between 8:15 and 8:30... They go to the playground when they arrive. There is a recess duty teacher. The kids line up when the bell rings. I'd be surprised if your school doesn't do this too.

Our kids don't get recess before school. I've never heard of that. When the kids get dropped off or bussed to school they stand on the walk close to the school until they are let in. At our school I would not want my kids out playing before school. There are too many busses & cars pulling into the parking lot which is between the school and playground so thats just asking for an accident. Also our kids are not to be dropped off any earlier then 7:35. School starts at 7:50. As for recess the kids grades K-6 get 40 min at lunch, that includes the time they eat. No other recess. I don't feel they need anymore recess than that anyways. Once you get to 7th grade here there is no more recess. That is how all the schools in our town work. They have PE 2 times a week. My DS who is a senior gets no recess of course but he has PE or weightlifting every other day as a class. Jen

I guess the before school thing really would depend on the layout of the school. Our playground is next to the school... no parking lot between -- thankfully! Especially during this time of the year, early morning is the only time that the kids can play outside comfortably because of the heat. Car traffic is routed so that the kids get out of the passenger door of the car and go right through the gate into the playground. The bus kids walk are dropped off and walk behind the school to get to the playground. I guess everywhere is different! Just like everything else. |

I teach at a 6-8 building and the kids get no recess. They have a 30 minute lunch, and they are expected to eat, and sit at the tables and talk and be good for the entire time! Needly to say there are many many discipline problems at lunchtime. I feel sorry for the teachers on lunch duty. I know I am tired when I go to a conference or meeting and have done nothing by sit all day! The students do have physcial ed for one semester, 40 minutes each day. |

My ds just started 3rd grade yesterday. They get one 30-40 minute recess a day. Of course, it is so hot out right now - they only went out for 15 minutes yesterday. They also get 45 minutes of PE 3 times a week, 45 music once a week and 45 minutes library time once a week. They do not go to the playground upon arrival at school. They go straight into the school and to the classroom. Now in 2nd grade, they had to wait outside their classroom until 5 minutes before the bell rang but there were teachers serving as monitors . like one teacher for every two classes.
