Red face Was I a good mom or a bad mom?

Having a lovely heat wave this week in NC.. Bear in mind, I'm generally a very "by the book" mom, trying to serve nutritional meals, etc etc. But today.... it's so hot... and we had to run some errands this AM. I told the kids, if they wanted to , I would take them out to lunch to..... Baskin Robbins! They were all shocked and confused. I said, ice cream would be our LUNCH! You can have a sundae if you want. Well, not too hard for them to decide. My 12 yr old DS said, Yeah, I'm sure this'll never happen again! LOL I said, yep, you better take advantage of it! This is a DEFINITELY a first!!!

So we went, and they did, in fact, have 2 scoop sundaes for their lunch. (I told them dinner would be sandwiches, grapes and baby carrots.)

Bad mom? Or points for being cool? (which I'm SO not)

Edited to add: it was in the 90's before noon today!

Points for being cool. Every once in awhile I let DD have cookies or cake (around birthdays) for breakfast, LOL and she is shocked when she asks and I say yes, LOL. When it's so hot sometimes you just have to change your eating habits a bit, it is supposed to be 100 here today with heat index at 113, everyday this week it is supposed to be over 100 and I hate the thought of cooking dinner and heating up the house, even with the AC on it still gets warm in the kitchen. Anyway, back to the point, you are NOT a bad mom, LOL.

Your kids will remember that for a long time---In fact, 15-20 years from now, they will probably start a conversation with "remember that day that mom let us have ice cream for lunch?"

Too cool, IMO.

Bad to say - I'm <SO> looking forward to the day to go to McD's with all 3, drop a $20 on the counter, and tell all 3 to 'pick what you want'.

A dream.

I think it is a fun thing and it sure isn't going to harm them.
Well, not unless you start doing it 3 times a day for the rest of their life

Everyone needs to do something different for a change. It makes life a lot more fun.

I do that stuff sometimes only we have dessert first and then get some lunch. We do it backwards for the fun of it and whatever is more convenient at the time

Some people would probably judge that bad but who are they to judge my circumstances and when you got some grumpy kids sometimes it is easier to do it that way.

Terrifc Mom!

There's nothing wrong at all with breaking the rules once in a while. Even something as small as this, it kicks up the mix in life.

Very cool, Mom.

We have ice cream for dinner

one time every summer. Otherwise you don't have enough room in your tummy for a double scoop!

Sounds good to me. Occasional treats like this are fun and harmless. Maybe I'll try that one day this week. It's been over 90 and will be for the rest of the week.

Great Mom!!! I bet your kids will talk about this for a long time and probably even do it when they have kids of their own. A couple of years ago for my parent's Christmas present, I had all of my brothers and sister (6 of us) write down 5 memories from childhood and I typed them out and put all the slips in a big glass jar from Pier 1. My parents pulled out each piece of paper and read the memories and were AMAZED at the small things like this that stuck with us. They laughed and cried at all the crazy things that left an impact on us, when to them it was no big deal. I applaud you for creating a grand memory. I promise you, you will hear about this in years to come!!

Growing up we had ice cream for breakfast every single Sunday! My dad has a huge sweet tooth and his doctor told him he needed to limit his sweets since he was putting on some weight and his blood tests were coming back borderline high (cholesterol, etc.). So he decided he would only have sweets once a week and have it for breakfast so he would be able to work off the calories throughout the day. Ice cream is his favorite sweet so that became our little family tradition.

My kids love to go to the movies over lunch. I figure occasionally it's not going to hurt them to have popcorn & pop for lunch. I think it's actually saving calories because instead of having lunch, then the popcorn, you skip lunch and have the popcorn!

I think you are a Cool Mom! We do stuff like this too. Realistically..... Cake isn't much different than a pancake covered in butter and syrup. Ice cream is just frozen milk ...right

There are days, when I just want a cookie and that will be lunch LOL I'm all for an ice cream surprise!

Me too... Sometimes our world is too by the book -- we worry about doing anything different or wrong. I like when we can relax a little and enjoy life.

I honestly believe that it's soooo good for the kids to see a 'by the book' mom or dad relax the *rules* a little bit now and then!

It is just one day, one hour, in their lives but you have probably etched a great memory into their brains that will last a lifetime!

Yea!!

Cool mom!!

On several occasions we'd have popcorn and ice cream for dinner. Corn is a veg and ice cream is a dairy product...right??
