Does your DH brown bag his lunch? What's in it?

DH and I bought a Bowflex today and are going to try to eat better and get more activity. I was just making his lunch for tomorrow and it seems like most of what I put in there is JUNK food. What does your SO take in his lunch? How much? This is what my DH takes for work:

banana
a bagel, coffee cake, or breakfast sandwich
cup of fruit (some sort of melon cut up)
2 granola bars
5 of the small Slim Jims( the box of 5) or 1 large stick of beef jerky
a sandwich or green salad whichever I have on hand
a cup of salad (potato, macaroni, coleslaw)

This is for breakfast and lunch and he's usually home by 3:30 and we eat dinner around 5:00 - 5:30. I am off to the cooking board to look for some lowfat recipes for dinner too!

DH does take a sack lunch, he takes a variety of things.....if there is any leftovers thats what he takes. But normally there isn't so he does green salads, pasta salads, smart ones, cottage cheese, string cheese, soup (during the winter) sandwiches, celery and his buys the individual jiffy cups of peanut butter, grapes, apples, oranges, yogurt, pretzels, hard boiled eggs (if he doesn't have time for breakfast), tuna pouches, lean pockets (sometimes) its changes all most ever week.

Also, let me know how the bowflex works, we have been thinking about getting one for about 3 weeks and are still on the fence.

Good luck one you lifestyle change!!!

Hubby eats breakfast at home (usually a small bowl of non-sugared cereal, oatmeal or a homemade egg mcmuffin).

Lunch is:

a drained can of albacore tuna (3 times per week) or canned chicken breast (2 times a week)
baby carrots, celery & grape tomatoes
a small container of low-fat yogurt
2 servings of fresh fruit that vary according to what we can get good at the grocery store (examples ~ red seedless grapes, kiwi, bananas, cantalope, watermelon, red/black plums, oranges, red grapefruit, etc..)

It depends-- usually during the summer, he doesn't want to eat lunch. Sometimes though, he'll take a sandwhich (usually a hoagie style), some Wheat thins, and lots of PowerAde.

In the winter, he likes to take soup, coffee, and crackers.

hubby eats breakfast at home (usually whole wheat toast with reduced fat peanut butter on it)

I make enough dinner so that they are leftovers. He takes the leftovers for work. He's not a "sandwich" guy so that won't work. He eats out about 2 times a month with guys from work. He drinks water with his lunch.

DH usually takes leftovers. If there are no leftovers he takes a couple of frozen burritoes or whatever frozen meals I have gotten free or cheap with coupons, or ham/turkey & cheese sandwiches.

DH takes breakfast & lunch.

Breakfast is always a protein bar (either strawberry Zone or Cinnamon Creme South Beach) and a piece of fruit - whatever I have and I always have a variety.

Lunch - he prefers leftovers and I always package up leftovers from dinner in separate containers. Sometimes if it's lasagna or something like that I will freeze them. He is not a sandwich type of guy, either. But, if we don't have any good leftovers he loves a pbj, snack bag of chips and a milk (I saved a Snapple bottle with a lid for this - goes in the dishwasher). He also loves large salads with meat - ie: leftover grilled steak, pork chops or chicken.

We both love a quick chicken caesar salad and I'll usually grill extra chicken breasts for this - chopped up grilled chicken breast, chopped romaine, parmesan cheese & Ken's Caesar dressing. Quick, healthy & easy.

He always drink water for lunch, but I pack a pop that he drinks in the afternoon.

He rarely eats out...like 5-6 times a year - when he has clients in. He says it's too much money, fat grams & calories! He's very disciplined. When I had a job, I loved eating out every Friday!

Thankfully my DH is not picky. He eats breakfast at home and 9 times out of 10, there are leftovers for him, which I pack up the night before, when I am cleaning up after dinner. He's basically eating our dinner again for lunch the next day, which he prefers.

Otherwise, I try to keep a few South Beach diet wrap sandwiches on hand, he likes those alot. I send to work w/ him, a few times a month, a bag of snacks to keep at his desk for whenever he gets hungry: Emerald Trail Mix (getting for free a lot lately), SB granola bars, etc. He also takes a 12 pk of diet soda to work every 10 days or so, so he has that to drink as well.

Looks like we're all trying to keep costs down.

He takes:
Sandwich (with lean meat and lettuce)
Fruit of the week (variety of whatever is on sale!), 2 of these
Trail Mix with Nuts, Raisins, M&M's, etc.
Chips or Vanilla Wafers or other...

He gets home at 5:30.

DH takes his breakfast to eat after he works out. He takes a whole wheat mini bagle, banana and a chocolate protein shake made with lowfat milk.

He usually goes out to lunch or it is catered in due to the nature of his job (he has a lot of 'working' lunches).

We have porridge at work for free (The quaker oatmeal cups...)

For lunch is whatever I made for dinner the night before (as leftovers..)

Whether its spagehtti, chicken or rice, or any combination.

If I bought yogurt, Ill bring a yoplait yogurt (NOT light).

Coffee for commuting, Ill bring.

Water/Coffee at work is free as well.

If there's no leftovers, and i bought frozen dinners, Ill grab one of them.

Sometimes Ill go to the salad bar, and buy a small salad to go with leftovers, if I wasnt happy with my choice from last night

This sounds bad but I have no idea what my dh eats for lunch. All the jobs he had lunch was provided by the company. Just a benefit he gets with his job.

David is a bean pole and can eat anything. This morning he took a bag a chips, a peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich, a Dunkin Stick, a turkey and swiss cheese sandwich in a hoagie roll, and a banana. He had toast, jelly, and cantalope for breakfast.

My husband works the graveyard shift twelve hours so he has to have a delicious substantial meal. I pack a large Tupperware three section microwavable dish with some kind of main course & some veggies or some rice or noodles or potatoes and some veggies. I make things like maple chicken, pork roast, lasagna, stuffed shells, Italian chicken.
He also takes two cans of fruit packed in 100% juice, no sugar or HFCS with pop top lids and he has one at each break. He once took a pedometer with him and he walks about 12 miles a night so he needs lots of good healthy food.

well, when he was working here, he didn't eat breakfast except once or twice a month, and then only oatmeal.

he came home for lunch. However, now that he's working in DC and we'll be in MD, he'll have to take it. He prefers leftovers most days. I'm thinking of maybe starting (or rather, attempting) to do Bento lunches for him.

What are Bento lunches?

My DH was a size 32 waist when we got married 11 years ago and now he's a size 40, he was always a string bean until maybe 8 years ago. I have never had a thin day in my life on the other hand so I am sure it's what I prepare for him (and the kids which is what worries me) that is making him gain all of the weight. I want to make better choices for them and I think I need a lesson on portion control too. The kids are not overweight thankfully, but I am teaching them their eating habits for life, which is what worries me. I try to give them lots of fruit and veggies which they love and healthy snacks, not too much junk, but they like to graze all day, not eat big "meals".

It's based on the Japanese way of making lunches more appetizing for the people eating it. Americans have caught onto this and it's a huge craze. Basically, the concept is putting in a little of this, a little of that in cute containers and giving the lunchee (lol, my own word) a really nice variety of things to eat for lunch. Things are packed in tightly which is great b/c if you see several small amounts of food items that are packed in pretty tight, your body thinks its eating more.

This site gives a great explanation and some pictures.
Cooking Cute: a bento site

ETA: I plan on getting dh the Mr. Bento lunch box. It's GREAT esp b/c he doesn't eat breakfast and if I send too small of a lunch, his blood sugar drops waaay low. so this way he can have lunch and be full.

ETA part 2: flipper, I was looking through pictures on flickr and wow. the things you can do w/ a mr. Bento. My dh can take a breakfast, lunch and snack in one lunch box. check it out:
