We're preparing to pack up and head home to take of aging parents. We need a self storage unit to free up space in the house before we put it on the market. Found a couple of places close. Other than checking for security fence and pricing, suggestions on what else to ask? I'm curious about insurance. Do these places offer it or do we obtain a rider through our homeowner's insurance? TIA |

Maybe you have done this already, but perhaps whittle down the stuff that needs storage to those things that will definitely be needed at some time and/or of sentimental value. Sell off everything else...no sense paying to store things that you may never use again. cj/ |

If you do get a regular storage unit..get a GOOD lock. Don't use the regular old padlocks that we've all grown up with. Get the kind that look like a circle...I know this isn't technically the name for them...On the circle kind the movable part retracts inside the lock when it is unlocked. This kind is really hard to break into. The old padlocks where the top swivels around can be cut very easily with bolt cutters. No matter what kind of security the place has, there is always someone that figures out how to break in. They will look for the padlocks that can be cut quick so they can get in & out. If your unit is broken into, they will most likely be looking for electronics & other small items that can be sold quickly. |

Eight years? That sounds like a long time. With your fees, have you paid for the value of your things a few times over?

Everything in there is sentimental stuff. We merged 2 households and the stuff I kept was stuff I just couldn't part with but had no room here for YET! Sooo I can't put a price tag on this stuff...But yes we do realize it is sooo stupid to be paying every month what we would pay for our own storage building. I just did the math and we have paid 6500 in 8 yrs OUCH! LOL |

we had one for 5 months while our home was being built. We fit our whole lives into the largest one they had. We paid $100 a month (it was a promo). You pay the insurance through your homeowners. I don't recall the cost to us but it was minimal

Check with your homeowners insurance and see if your items will be covered while in storage. We had a storage until for 3 months while we were moving. Ours was insured through our homeowners. It depends on how long your stuff will be in there if you need climate controlled or not. Think of non-climate controlled as storing things in your garage. We knew ours would be in there only a few months in the spring (we live in GA, so freezing was not an issue). Sarah.........mom to Jason & Devin |

Estate sells usually make more than just a garage sell if you are going to go ahead and trim things down now. I would call a company that handles these types of things! You have to do nothing and they will get you alot of cash!

Finally found a place for what we hope is just a few months before we leave town. Checked w/ the insurance company & the items are covered under homeowner's policy, but subject to our deductible. Thank you to everybody for the suggestions. I suggested to DH the best one was probably to continue the whittling, otherwise we'll need a semi-trailer to move everything. |
