Anybody have experience with kids and hearing aids?

My 6 year old needs one and I was just wondering what kind of problems we may encounter. Any experience with school ? Anybody use the FM system? TIA Jodi

Daniel has them..his are the digital...not sure if that is the FM ones you are talking about. His are the ones that fit over his ears. He has autism so it has been a little harder to get him to wear them except when he wants too.. but he has did quite well with them. The biggest thing to worry about is them taking them out and fooling with them or laying them down, that and water is the number one worry especially in the summer. You have to make sure they understand if they are around water play/pool etc. they have to come out.. And to remember to check they are out at nite when they bathe or shower. Most give a year replacement if they are lost or damaged. But only a year. I personally watch those things like they are a fourth baby around here. I always know where they are and they are always put back in the cases when they are not in the ear. They are easy to take care of for the most part. But I had experience too from Daddys hearing aides. I swear he was worse then any kid with messing with them!
any questions I can try to answer..

FM system is a microphone that the teacher wears when the student is in their room. Speakers are place aroung the room for amplification. We do have a child, in school, that uses the FM system.

My little boy is four and has hearing aids. He was three when diagnosed with mild hearing loss. His speech was bad, that what the red flag for us. He has had them now for a year and a half. He lost one on the playground after having them for only three months. 150 replacement fee for a child. We had the casing changed to bright colors so they would be easier to see. He also has a clip on them so that if they fall off, they will still be attached to his shirt. We are in GA and it is hot. He does well with them now. He knows they help him hear. He just started pre k this year and they will be setting up the room with an FM system. To me, my boy doesn't think he is any different than anyother kid and most kids wish they had them because we taught him that they are really cool! His sister is jealous!

Our insurance did not cover hearing aids. They consider it a luxury, but check with your state and social service places. The GA lottery has a special program and they covered it and it was a blessing!
