Question weird behavior?

my 5 year old daughter started school this past week for teh first time all day!!! everything is going great but she won;t use the bathroom at school!!!!
I asked her why (but didn;t get a coherent answer),even went to lunch and ask her to go to teh bathroom .she refused.the teacher is talking ot her ,but to no avail.even send her to to the bathroom, but she wont; actually use it!!
so far only one accident, but it doesn;t seem good for a little gilr to be "holding " all day long!!

on the other hand, the first day( of the bridge program in that school back in july) .she went to teh bathroom(bathroom located in the classroom),and a little boy tried to go in while she was in there.but she told him to wait .but then ,the boy threw up in the classroom.maybe it is that ? I really do not know!

any advice..what can we do ?

I would get the school counselor or school nurse involved. I don't see how she holds it all day. In fact, I bet she's not. I don't believe there's any way a person could last all day without going to the restroom. Are the restrooms located in the classroom, one for boys and one for girls? When my kids were in elementary, two classrooms shared one set of restrooms. Do the doors lock?

Bathroom problems are quite common, My son rarely used the school bathrooms in grade school. Of course when I found out the boys liked to urinate in the drains and clog up the toilets I can see why!!! lol Boys will be boys!!! Don't worry too much about it yet. Talking to the school counselor is a good idea. Good luck!

in our school the k bathrooms are between two classes. (shared). Anyway. The toilet flush is VERY LOUD... it scares a lot of the kids and they are afraid to use it.

Maybe that could be the case for your DD.

My daughter was the same way because she did not think that the bathrooms were clean enough. Truthfully, the school was old and the bathrooms were not great. She continued this behavior through much of elementary school. We had many talks about this, but she rarely used the bathroom.

I never used the bathroom in school and I still rarely ever go in public. I have a bathroom fettish like you wouldn't believe. So what do you think happens to me, I get daughter who goes constantly. No matter where we are she has to go. She told me she got 2 yellow cards today because she had to go twice. They only allow them to go at break time, on recess or at lunch. If they need to go any other time they get a card. I don't agree with this rule but I told her if she only gets cards for bathroom breaks and not behavior I can live with that. I would hate for her to have an accident. I would think your daughter would be worried about that(kids don't forget who pees their pants). Is there any consequences(like the cards) if she goes?

From about 3rd grade up I wouldnt use school bathrooms the teachers complained because "I went too much" <usually once in the morning and once after lunch> so instead of getting in trouble i didnt go. boy i had to go as soon as I got off that bus thoguh! She's probably afraid of someone coming in or the loud noise you mentioned

It is quiet normal for a child her age not to use the bathroom at school. Just ask the teacher she will tell you. I have a friend who girl won't use the bathroom and about once a week she had to pick up early because she had an accident. I wouldn't make a big deal about it, when you dd is comfortalbe with the bathrooms and school she will use them.

maybe the teacher could have a planned potty break and send several of the girls in together. perhaps dd will be more comfortable using the bathroom when she sees a few of her classmates do so...

other than that, be sure she goes before leaving the house in the morning!

thanks for your input.I went to see the couselor who informed me that little girls are less likely to use the bathroom at first(it is inside the the classroom for K) and think it is weird to have it there.,but in time they get used to it.I need to leave a change of clothes in her backpack.
the teacher is working with her ,and try to get her to go to the bathroom,we will see in time!!!
she is not the first one and won;t be the last one!!!
she goes before we leave the hous e,and she goes immediately after she gets home!!!!

Are the toilets automatic flush ones? My DD hates using the school bathrooms because they are automatic and if she leans forward to get toilet paper, the toilet flushes on her while she's still sitting on it. The t.p. rolls are far enough forward from the toilets that a kid has to lean over to reach them. The toilets are like super flushers, too. Really loud and the water gets sucked down super fast. Her whole K year, she never used the bathroom at school (only half day here so not so bad). When she started going to school all day she had to start using it. She was more afraid (embarrassed) to have an accident than she was of the "monster-flush" toilets! I just told her to get her paper before she sat down so there's less chance of it flushing on her.

I would do the same thing in school. I remember in high school I would hold from when I left for school until I came home even after marching band it was 6 pm some nights. Even now when I travel my body "shuts" down and I don't usually won't go until I stop for the night.

Maybe she is scared after the little guy threw up outside the door?

That's the case for mine, too! She hates that loud flush - it has such industrial strength power and loudness.

I never used the bathroom in school or anywhere else in public, unless i felt like i couldnt hold it any longer, my friend still busts my butt that I never go to the bathroom. I also have a daughter who I swear she just liked to use public restrooms because i hated it, she's 7 now though and says she doesnt like to use them anymore though because they're dirty. But the best rest rooms I've ever seen where in ToysRUs so clean (scranton) had a stool for the kids and a clean changing table with diapers and wipes I was shocked, makes me want to take them there!!!
