Trampolines

Do you let your kids on trampolines and if so, under what conditions?

Yes, but only 2 at a time (if a large trampoline!).

I've read and heard that the cage can cause a false sense of security and that kids get hurt regardless of whether the net is there or not. Not sure...

We've had a trampoline for over 4 years now. So far, no injuries... knock on wood.

We've had ours for 3 years and so far, no injuries here either, except for a few bumped heads. There is one mom in the neighborhood who won't let her kids on it and I feel kinda bad when everyone is having fun and the two sons sit and watch from the deck.

I think it's a really fun form of exercise.

I do suppose that the usefulness of the nets depends on the age and size of the children.

We've had ours for 3 or 4 years now. It doesn't have the netting around it. My son did break his foot on it but it had nothing to do with falling off or anything. He had fell while they were bouncing and someone came down on his foot. Broke a small bone in the top of his foot, he wore a special thingy for a couple of weeks then was fine. Other than that the only other accidents have been from the kids bouncing into each other. Then it was only bumps no one was actually hurt.

We do not have a trampoline, but i don't mind if my DD jumps on one. A question for you: did having a trampoline cause your home owners insurance to go up? I remember when we had our in ground pool built, the insurance comapany asked me if we had a trampoline and we don't, but I asked them why they needed to know that and they said their home owners insurance increases when you have a trampoline (because of the accident rate). I thought it was kinf of ironic, the rates did NOT increase to have an in ground pool, but would increase for a trampoline.

Nah! Funny... Never! I bet he's a cutie pie.

My oldest is only about 115 but I wonder if the net would hold his weight if he actually jumped or fell against it!

I had a kid in my clinic with a head injury from a tramploine so needless to say I'm not thrilled about them. We don't own one, and never will, but the neighbors do. They can play on it but only one jumper at a time.

We have had a trampoline for years now. When I got it I called the insurance people and YES we had to increase the rates. And like you when we got your pool we didn't.

Our kids had 3 friends with them in their old neighborhood - they absolutely loved them. I didn't care at all - you can't keep them from getting hurt on everything! Luckily they never did. They wanted one when we moved a couple months ago, but I found out we can't have them in our subdivision. Oh well.

DS is 10. Sprained his back on one last year. He was at a friend's house, I wasn't too crazy about him being on it, but the mom did the 'I watch them, not more than 2 at a time' line on me. She was inside watching tv, there were 4 on there and mine lost his footing, landed wrong and we spent the night at the ER. X-Rays, ortho visits and some scary times. They later got rid of the thing - she was worried about being sued by someone who wasn't as nice as me. We're not friends anymore - other issues.

But, no trampolines in my world. Theirs was used - seems a friend got rid of it after their son was hurt on it.

ER doc and ortho both told me they were seeing a lot of trampoline accidents. It was a scary night and he had a lot of pain for a few weeks. We were blessed that it wasn't more serious.

We've had one for 5 years now. It's a big one with a net. We have always allowed only 2 at a time.

The first week we had it, the neighbor kid got a bloody nose when someone bonked him while bouncing. I felt terrible. We have had no other accidents in 5 years, but I get VERY nervous when kids other than my own jump on it.

Our homeowners insurance did not go up, and we called to let them know we had it.

My kids love being on one, but we did watch and only one at a time. Our neighbor had an in-ground pool. Wanted to also put a trampoline in the yard. Called their insurance company to make sure insurance would cover it---rates went up about 25%. They had had 0% increase when they put in their pool. Got the trampoline anyway. When they wanted to get rid of it a few years later, they decided to donate it. First went to some afterschool programs to offer it (and cage) and were told they could not have trampolines in the facilities--too many accidents. Tried to give to goodwil and salvation army--no go there either. Finally ended up just chucking it into landfill.

I know that tramps. can be dangerous---but it all depends on the kids, the safety precautions and the PARENTAL SUPERVSION. Accidents are just that--accidents. Some accidents are preventable (with nets and supervision) and some are not (such as the bloody nose types).

I say don't ban all trampolines--just be vigilant.

Our dd was sitting on the neighbors when their very overweight daughter jumped up and jumped on it and bounced out daughter off into the bushes. broke her rt are in 2 places. our daughter was 4 at the time and their daughter was 8. those cages really come in handy or would have at least saved our daughter from getting a borken arm.

I will let my kids jump on one with max 2 kids and only if I am watching them. They maybe have one or two times because there are always like 6 kids on the neighbors tramp. I would love to have one BUT our insurance company won't allow them. I called around and one one insurance company would insure you if you had one and then your rates tripled. So, not worth it to me. My neighbor doesn't have insurance on his so I hope no one gets hurt!

What's interesting is that in our town, a 33 year old woman bounced off a tramp, broke her neck and died She was playing with her kids: not drunk, on drugs or anything. So sad...you always think of kids getting hurt

My DS plays on trampolines in the neighborhood. I would love to get one for our yard, but DH doesn't want the liability. Kids will be kids -- two boys in our neighborhood broke their arms playing kickball (two different incidents). You can't shelter kids all the time -- accidents happen.

I used to love playing on our trampoline!!! Our kids have never used one though. We do have a full-sized bounce house that we use constantly though, so same difference!! They love it and will play on it for hours on end!!

I will only let my daughter jump at my BIL's(at parties) if it is only the little kids. The older boys tend to be a bit CRAZY(my son included). As far as broken bones are concerned my daughter broke hers by tripping over her own feet in her own house(she was 5). At my sisters I don't allow either of my kids to jump. Theirs is so unsafe(in my eyes). No net and right next to brick decking.

my kids love to jump on my parents trampoline, they've had it for atleast 8 yrs. Nobody has ever gotten hurt on it except my dummy husband who didnt think that you need the net. He got tossed off and right into the pole (where the net was going) hit midback and flew to the ground, I just laughed (he wasn't really hurt, just a little pain he was 25) and said oh yeah YOU don't need a net.

We had one for a few years. The mat ripped so we took it down. The in-laws are getting the kids another one for christmas. I let my kids and the neighbors on it but 3 at a time is the limit (my kids are small). I do not let anyone on it during parties. My kids jumped in it everyday.

I am wondering what insurance company people who HAVE tramps are using?Like I said in my post, it's nearly impossible to find an insurance company around here that will take you if you have one
