Taking away a driver's license?

My mom should really not be driving..Is there a way to get her driver's license removed without the obvious of myself or dad looking like the guilty party??

Taking it away doesn't mean she'll stop driving. My parents tried that with my Grandma. She kept on driving anyway.

I believe you can get her doctor involved, that way he'll be the bad person. Does your dad still drive? If so, he will need to be in possession of the car keys or put in a safe place just in case your mom is tempted to drive anyway.

That really is the best idea, that way she can't be mad at anyone in the family. Do you think she would actually listen to the doctor though? My grandfather was almost legally blind and he would not stop driving, finally I think I talked him into the fact that he was going to kill someone and that finally changed him mind. Do you know anyone on the police department, maybe they could talk to her? That could scare her into stopping?

It is so hard when you live in a rural area adn there aren't any buses or public transportation.

It depends on the state where she lives. I know in Missouri there is a form that can be filled out and sent to the DMV. (Looked into it for my own Mother.)

my mom talked to the DmV and they made my grandpa take a driving test and he failed. Before that, they just needed to pass the eye test. I think all people should have to retake the driving, written and eye test after say 55 years old, after major surgery (like a stroke), etc. MANY people over 75 have NO business being on the road

The accident that we were in almost a year ago involved our family of four and an elderly man -- looked to be close to 80. He ran a solid red light into the front corner of our car.

Airbags deflated and all was fine but he had no business being behind the wheel. He as lucky that he himself wasn't killed. I always felt that he might have had a mini-stroke or some sort of seizure but maybe it all had to do with age.

I hope that his kids or someone took away his license. Sad.

My DH's dad knew himself when it was time for him to stop driving (around age 83!) and yes, it makes him virtually homebound. Luckily, his wife is quite a bit younger -- not lucky for her but she loves him and drives him around a few times a week to doctor's appointments etc. We are glad that he's not driving...

I tried to have my Dad's pulled here in Florida about 6 years ago- it's easy to do here at least- I went to the DMV online and they had a form I could fill out online and submit there. It took about 2-3 weeks before they showed up at my parents house to interview him. They talked to him- told him he needed to at least temporarily give it up while they looked into it. My Dad had to submit paperwork from his doctor and also an eye doctor that he was safe to drive before they would give it back. He did get it back though.

They never told him it was me- said it was confidential. My Mom knew it was me- I talked with her and my brothers and sisters before I did it. We tried to have his doctor do i but he said he couldn't do it- boy was I mad when I found out he could have but lied about it.

My next door neigbor was bound and determined to drive until he DIED. Well, he did. He pulled out in traffic and another car T boned him. The firefighters had to use the jaws of life to get him out of the car. He died one month later after several surgeries and enormous bedsores. Fortunately, his wife was not injured.

Speak up! I used to carp at him all the time about driving. In fact, when I was home he would not drive, but I was in Italy. He was buried on my birthday the day after I got home from Italy. You will feel terrible if your mother, father, or next door neighbor is killed and you never said anything. Take out a car part if you have to.

Thanks for all your replies..It's much easier said than done..I'm well aware of the dangers involved in driving..The ramifications of this down the line include involve not being able to live alone , moving etc..My mom fell about 6 months ago and since then her health has really declined...She hasn't accepted this "decline" thus is resistant to other issues which this impacts because she doesn't "see" herself as any different tho we do....thanks..

I took the keys and the cars away and told my Daddy he would not drive anymore period. It was harder on me yes, I had to take him everywhere. But I would have rather did that then to have felt responsible for him killing someone.
