Will your teenager wear used clothes?

I have 3 nieces 2 are sisters and they can only wear the best.. Hollister, Abercrombie, etc... and they refuse to wear used (mom can't say no, ) It's a sad situation over there financially so I don't get it.. My other niece on the other hand wears the same brands and loves to go to platos closet and goodwill.. Do your kids have a problem with used clothes? I have a 2 and 4 year old and my 4 year old is always bragging about his goodwill finds and is the first to run and tell everyone about a cool rebate item.. too funny, so I'm wondering if that will change as he gets older.

I don';t think it will change for your little one!!!!
it didn;t change for my 13 year old!!!she loves a good bargain!!!!!and doesn;t mind going to goodwill or yard sales etc...she is a savvy shopper.we went the other day to the outlet and she found 7 tee shirts Aeropostale for $16!!
it is just the way we shop ,and kids follow!!!we do not care for brands ,but rather quality and price!!!

My 16 year old loves getting bargains too! Doesn't matter if it's hand-me-downs, garage sale specials, Good Will, Thrift Stores, etc....

my teens yet but my 8 and 6 year old love to help me find bargains. I don't usually buy used clothes because I am get new ones for roughly the same cost and then I sell them for about what I paid. I don't "do" designer brands so if they want to do it later on, I'll give them a set budget and they can shop. If they only get 2 things instead of 8...that's their problem, not mine. I can't imagine that mine will get that picky but you never know...

I think kids are more sensitive about used clothes at the middle school age, because they are pretty insecure about their place in the world - the middle school world, which is all that counts! - at that age.

My kids were used to second hand clothes from the thrift store and yard sales, but they did worry that people would make fun of them at that age. I avoided yard sales in my own neighborhood, and I always just washed any clothes I bought them and hung them in their closets. I bought really, really nice stuff, too!

I pointed out that they were not obligated to tell anyone where their clothes came from, whether it was from the mall or from Goodwill - all they ever had to say was "I dunno. My mom bought it."

They've all gotten over it by the time they were in high school, and are pretty enthusiastic about thrift stores by the time they've gotten to college.

My 11 yo doesn't care what brand he wears, or if they are used or not..as long as they look nice. I bought more used things (garage sales/goodwill) when he was small, but I almost never buy used clothing now. It is much harder to find his size at garage sales now since he wears men's sizes now. I just shop clearance racks, and buy when there is another extra percent off, and find it usually cheaper than buying used. My son wears mainly name brand stuff (Aeropostal, Gap, Old Navy) since I can find it so cheap. I got my son a few pairs of really nice jeans at the Gap last week for $4.99 on clearance...and they cost more than that at Goodwill for used yucky jeans. I also recently got him really thick, warm "hoodies" at Aeropostal on clearance for under $5 each. They will be great for this winter. And most of his school clothing came from Gap & Old Navy clearance racks last week for only a few dollars per piece...WAY CHEAP Much better deals than I ever find on nice used stuff.

Heck, I won't wear used clothes, so I wouldn't ask my teenagers to either with the exception of some hand-me downs within the family (brother to brother). Like sexysmurf, I feel pretty good about the bargains that I'm able to get new on the brands that we'd like to wear. Doesn't bother me if others shop and wear used clothing, it's just not for me. Actually I'm glad that there's plenty of people who shop consignment shops, as I reclaim $$ there.

My nephew, who is a Jr in high school used to ONLY wear new, name brand clothes. Once I took him with me to Goodwill gave him $15. He found SO MANY very nice name brand he was blown away. He LOVES having tons of clothes. (He and his friends are all football players/wrestlers and have decided that brand new looking clothes are geeky)

If you had told me a year ago that he would happily buy stuff second hand I would have laughed

My boys are 16 and 13. They do not care what the brand name is as long as it is a style they like. Last night while I was in class, my hubby took them to Rugged Warehouse and they each got a pair of name brand jeans that are suppose to be irregulars for $8 a piece. We couldnt find anything on the jeans that looked irregular at all. My boys were raised to love a good deal and to understand the value of money.

My 16 DS will doesn't care where anything comes from, not particular at all. On the other hand my 13 DS will not wear anything from a thrift store or goodwill or if it doesn't cost to suit him. I buy nothing that isn't name brand. The kid is more particular than any girl I've ever known.

Matter of fact, we shop at Vanity Fair for jeans. You know they used to have 1/2 price off the tagged price. So if I paid $14.00 for a pair of jeans he thought they were $28.00. This year they changed the tags to reflect the 1/2 off. He literally left there with nothing. That is the exact reason I had to set an amount for school clothes. One ends up with gobs of clothes and the other few little, but that's his choice.

This is THE first year that my 13 year old didn't get all her clothes brand new. She picked out quite a few things from Goodwill. The rest came from Penney's w/ those $10/$10 coupons and a few things MIL got her at the mall. MIL buys her school clothes every year and will get her stuff from wherever she wants. We bought both the older ones clothes this year, so they had budgets.

My nephew has NEVER worn anything from Goodwill or anything like that. He shops almost exclusively at Abercrombie. He's a manager at one of the stores in NJ since graduating from college.

Mine loved the challenge of finding the best stuff they could at Goodwill. They would have rather had better brand names from Goodwill than have to wear Old Navy. I don't get payint $60+ for jeans when you can get good jeans for less than $25 so no pricey designer duds were bought unless they were second hand.

I am a fantastic bargain shopper but draw the line at used clothes. I just won't go there. Our Goodwill is one of the most disgusting places I have ever been in. We have lots of great discount stores here and we are always able to find things the kids want at one of them or else at a great sale.

Well dd is only 7. She thinks anything with a tag on it is new. So yes, she will wear like new clothes.

I agree with cjs on this one! I won't wear used clothes - except if they come from a close family member - and wouldn't expect my kids to do it either. I find that if I shop the sales at Macy's, Old Navy, etc., I can get great deals on brand new clothes for all 5 of us.

Yep! That's THE only way my 13 year old is getting Abercrombie stuff. It's way too expensive for MY pocketbook.

My son can't wear most of what he finds at Goodwill (he's a very big boy) but he loves a good bargin and shops like the barginhunter I raised him to be. My boyfriend's son (just turned 13) is picky but I figured out that if I put it in his dad drawers Sam will wear it thinking its his Dad's.

My kids love our thrift store. We buy new stuff too, but make trips to our local thrift store a few times a year. They love that they can get tons of almost new or sometimes even new with tags, name brand stuff!

There is a great store for teens called Platos Closet. It is consignment, but everything must be less than a year old, and from only the top stores for teens. It's always an adventure every time we go. Hollister, Abercrombie, Aeropostale, Guess and many other "hottie" brands are there.
See if there is one near you. Brand Name Gently Used Clothing - Plato's Closet
