Hoa's vs. the clothesline!

The following article is in today's Christian Science Monitor, and
discusses Right To Dry -- as well as the growing number of states that
are passing laws intended to override the HOA bans on clotheslines.

As an energy-saver, the clothesline makes a comeback | csmonitor.com

any comments?

When I lived in a community we couldn't hang clothes out and I can understand why, it can make it look sort of junky depending on where you hang them. Where we live now there really isn't a place to hang them, so I hang them in the house on a rack. I did hang them on the rack on the upper porch, but you could see it from the road and it looked terrible, so now i leave them inside. We have an upstairs laundry and I am not carting wet laundry down and outside and then back up again.

I don't think they should be banned, there are a lot of things people have in their yards that look just as bad.

I don't think they should be banned. We need to think of more energy efficent methods of living on this earth. Granted they can look tacky but some of the lawn decorations look just as tacky.

our HOA wont' allow it either and I am am actually glad. Although I am big on saving energy, I do not want to see someone else's laundry hanging out. It does make it look junky. It just seems that the people around here that hang our their clothes are the same ones who junk up their houses too. I don't know why but it does seem that way. I hand clothes on racks in the bathroom or in the basement. I can open the basement door to let the breeze in. It's not big deal. I think it would be hard to say you can do them but you have to make them look nice. Kind of impossible

We have restrictive covenants that prohibit clotheslines, but I use one anyways. I think it makes more sense to do what we can to save energy than to have everything "perfect" to the eye. However, we have a retractable clothesline that strings from one end of the deck to an adjacent tree and it's not visible from the road or anyone else's backyard. I don't have any junk in my yard and I took my Christmas lights down in January. teehee

My rack is inside too. With my allergies I can't hang them outside.

We have an outdoor clothesline, it was here when we moved in and the house was built in 1930, so they must have used it alot in earlier days. We have never used it to dry clothes (allergic to pollen) but have used it to dry craft projects on, like tye dye shirts and we tye dyed a comforter for DD's room and that type thing. Even though we don't use it alot I would hate to be told I can't hang something out if I wanted to.

Clothes hanging on the clothesline are now junky and tacky looking??? It's just clothes, everyone wears them. I don't get it. Maybe I have a very different opinion cause I'm older than some others here? I grew up with hanging clothes out on the line. We didn't have a dryer until I was probably in the 6th grade. Maybe later than that.

I feel the same way, we didn't have on until I was about 14. When we bought our house, one of the first things I had DH do was put up my clothesline, it just made it feel more like home to me,

I have allergies, too. Whenever I dry something outside, I throw everything in the dryer after it is already dry and that kills the pollen.

I totally agree with you!! I can't believe the mindset I'm reading here. Trashy and junk?? Got to be kidding!! I love to hang clothes outside. There's nothing nicer than to hang your sheets outside and smell the freshness. I hang DH's work clothes outside. It saves us $$ by not using the dryer. I don't like hanging my towels outside because it's makes them rough feeling.

Obviously there's a generation gap here. Go out in the country and you'll see laundry hanging in back yards. And it's not 'trash' that lives there!!!

I'm thinking maybe I phrased my post incorrectly. If I saw sheets out I wouldn't think it was junky BUT the majority of people who hang out their laundry in our area ALSO have other junk around their house so it just adds to the "visual" of having more outside than need be,thus, appearing more junky. My grandma had a neighbor who had a clothesline and all we would see all day is his underwear flapping in the breeze...not the sight we want to be seeing. They would stay out there all day..sometimes days at a time. I guess I have a warped opinion of clotheslines because of the ones I have seen so I apologize if I offended anyone

I'm not sure our HOA has any rules on this one, but with the dust storms out here clothes lines are NOT common. My grandmother used to use one when I was tiny. I do know we have state laws here that prevent HOA's from banning solar panels and the like, and I wouldn't be surprised if this eventually ends up in such a category.

My grandma & mom always hung clothes out to dry I did when I lived in my trailer because I had a clothesline & was always trying to save money to of course. But now I dont have one in this house & my dh wont let me put one up the nieghbors all do it though but for the most part they are hid I dont ever see thiers.
The only reason I dont care for some is I dont need to see other underwear & things like that other than that I dont care I think it looks much better than some people when I go down the street who hang them on thier front porch & stuff. Can I see the HOA not allowing them yes because ya never know what people will hang on them & so on like putting them in the front yard or on the house with no clothes line at all

Oh my gosh, I'm having my father and husband install my new T-post today for a clothesline! I've always wanted one and my parents tracked down a post for my birthday. They actually had to order it since none of the hardware/home stores carried them!

I live at the end of a cul-de-sac with 8 acres behind me, so I don't think it'll upset anyone. I loved my mother's clothesline. I remember hiding behind the sheets when she hung them out. I love the smell of clothes hung out to dry, and of course saving energy is a plus for me too.

If I had neighbors behind me, I probably wouldn't install a line because I have to agree that I wouldn't want to look at someone's clothes hanging outside. At our old house, the neighbor next door had a line and would hang rags out - and forget that they were hanging out there. They'd be there in the rain - it wasn't a pretty sight, but I would never complain to them about it.

The clothesline just has too many good childhood memories for me!

Just another reason I would never live in a housing developement. My sister lives in a condo and they have sooo many rules. no basketball, no large christmas decorations, no cloths lines. The way I see it, I bought the place and I am the one paying for it and just why do they think they can tell me what I can have on my pwn property. I would never live somewhere I couldnt have a cloths line. Heck the dryer we have is older than our daughter and she is 22 and it works great, when we actually use it which is very ver little . No need in wasting power to dry something that the good Lord already provided means for . And for FREE! lol

I hang my clothes out all the time. The only thing I dry is underwear. I wouldn't EVER live somewhere that I was told no clothesline. I love the smell and feel of things freshly hung outside. My yard my business. If you don't like it don't look in my backyard. Easy as that.

Yes on just about every Cops show they are in some dirty nasty house and then the next thing you know the cops are running through the back yard with clothes hung all over the clothesline, so I can see where some ppl made the leap......does a clothes line bring to mind a trashy place...Yes, I can see it. But in this day and age where everyone is going GREEN and doing their part to help the earth, I think clotheslines are a wonderfully simple way to reduce the amount of energy we use on a daily basis AND you are helping your electric bill.

I use a clothesline for rugs, sheets and towels, sweaters and some of my kids heavier clothing such as jackets and jeans. Not everything goes outside to the line but, I might just start doing so.

I love clothes hung out on the line ('cept for underwear); but I think it's only b'cuz it reminds me of my grandma [who passed away in 1989]. I don't use a clothes line, but I do like to see them being used (by others). Silly, huh?

My snooty neighborhood does this also, but I LOVE hanging clothes out on the line! At my old house , and growing up, that was the only way we had to do it. It just seems so natural and healthy. After my last power bill( $288 ) I am going to rethink the whole thing. Sometimes I get really crazy and hang them all thru the house. Donna
