Hi- Ranitidine is the generic form of Zantac. I have been taking 150mg/2xday for Many years. It blocks the production of some type of stomach acid (?). I am "ulcer prone" with a hyper acidic stomach, this stuff works extremely well. It is MUCH less expensive than the over-the-counter Zantac. HTH! |

Promethazine is the generic of PHENERGAN--generally used for vomiting, sometimes pain and sometimes in codeine based cough syrups. It has a sedative effect (in fact knocks me out quicker and better than a lot of narcotics!) And it is cheap--but I don't think it would be useful for ulcers.

Ranitidine, Cimetidine and Famotidine are all products to reduce stomach acid. The brand names for these medicines are Zantac, Tagamet and Pepcid. They however work differently than Omeprazole, which is the generic for Prilosec. Talk to your doctor, he may be able to give samples to your husband so that his ulcer can heal, and then maybe he could use one of these other products to keep it from coming back. Your doctor knows your husband best and would be the best one to make that decision.

Call the doctor and tell him/her what has happened with the medication price increasing. The doctor can prescribe something cheaper probably without even an office visit. I wouldn't take chances just guessing at something. Plus the doctor would have to write the prescription anyway.
