Boss fired, how long should I wait......

Sadly, my boss was fired today. It seemed as though she was completely blind-sided. We never even saw her leave the building. The admin and assist. admin cleaned out her office for her. Bad day.

When our department was informed of what happened, we were told the position would be open internally before an ad was placed. I don't want to seem like a vulture(I really liked my boss) but, I also don't want to appear uninterested. How long should I wait before expressing interest?

I feel terrible for this person. I just don't want to see an outside person come in and clean house. I really love my job and my co-workers are great.

I don't think it would be disloyal of you to express an interest in the position as soon as the position is listed internally. If you love your department, co-workers and job, I say go for it. Wouldn't you like to be a cohesive part of bringing the department back together and letting them know that you are a team member and want to keep the working team intact? Don't let the female tendency to be the "nice" one get in the way of your desires. I say GO FOR IT NOW!

I'd be curious as to why she was let go before I'd pursue the position.

Actually, I kind of saw it coming. The scores for our department have been low, and she was unwilling to make the needed changes. That doesn't make her a bad person, just not an effect leader. (boy, that sounds harsh)

I'm not very pleased with the way it was handled, not being allowed to clean out her own office and so forth. Other then that, we were told the reason were between upper management and my boss.

I think you should express interest the very next day (after sleeping on it for one night ). It's not uncommon for replacement candidates to be identified long before a job is posted - and sometimes the posting is just to satisfy company requirements. Let the hiring manager know that you're interested; he/she will likely value your initiative, enthusiasm, and desire for the team to be effective.

In light of what information you have on why she was probably let go, I think you should definitely try for it - and don't wait!

And remember - this is business. You can still like your old boss - don't feel guilty. If you don't go for the job, they're still replacing her, right?

Good luck! Keep us updated.

I say go for it and let them know that you are interested! It is good that you have privy to the info on how/why she was let go. It sounds like an excellent opportunity.

EXACTLY!! Let them know right away as they are probably already talking about who they want to take over the job.

I would express interest in the job right away. Management is already thinking about who to put in the position and the sooner you let them know you're interested the better.

Not being allowed to clean out your office is fairly common in the work place when you are fired. Sometimes they will give you a box and stand next to you and watch you pack. They don't want you to take anything that isn't your personal belonging.

Go for it!! If you think you can do the job, don't hold yourself back.

Think about sending your old boss a card expressing your sympathy at what has happened to her. I'm sure that she is in shock. Let her know the things that you admired about her. Don't say that you are going to try for her old job. Keep it at a caring but professional level.

Thanks for all of the advice/support. All of the upper management had all day in house meetings on Tuesday, and today they had outside meetings at the corp. offices. There have been some big changes within the company this week. They will be posting the openings by the end of the week.

However, I did manage to speak with the director yesterday to express my interest. She appeared glad to hear it, so we'll see.
