I don't think it's an age thing. My 14 year old daughter has them.

This sounds really gross, but my Dr. told me you can cut them off yourself instead of going to a Dr. to have it done. Like with a pair of manicure sizzors - and to just make sure everything is cleaned with alcohol .... I find the thought of cutting my own skin too disgusting.

I mentioned them to my doctor when I was there recently. He said they are no big deal, and he whipped out a big can of freezing cold air & froze them right off. They turned black, and than fell off. I have heard you can cut them off, but I couldn't bring myself to do that. I have twisted them until they practically died & than fell off a few weeks later - that is extremely painful tho & I wouldn't recommend it!!

I've had them since I was a teenager, so they aren't from aging.

I had one that was right under my eye and I had that one cut off. A few years ago I was getting some large ones around my neck that were really noticeable and I had them cut off as well. They inject a little numbing stuff and then just slice them off. You look like you have a lot of little bee stings after, and putting ice on the area helps.

Since then I have tried to watch for them - you can usually feel them when they are just starting to pop out, and then I snip them off with a manicure scissors. If you get them when they are really little it doesn't hurt and they don't bleed. I cut a big one off once and that darn thing bled for hours! plus it really hurt!

I personally think they are caused by some sort of virus, or else they run in families.

I have them, you can take dental floss or thread and tie them off. Some are just not in places you can do that though, I had them under my armpits and had to have them removed in an in-office surgery type thing. There were like 34 between both armpits, it was gross. I hate them.

Be careful about taking them off yourself. I always go to the doctor. If you cut one that is too big it can continue to bleed. My doctor has had to stop the bleeding on home cutting several times. Skin tags usually happen in places on the body that rub ( like underarms, bra areas, etc)

I tied a hair around the bottom one of mine that was on my abdomen (at the suggestion of a friend). It was hard to get it tight enough but once I got it on there it worked great - the tag fell off in a few days.

I had a few on my neck and I noticed it's right where my shoulder harness for my seat belt is at my neck. So I bought one of those fleece things that you put on your seat belt and covered it. That's helped a lot.

But to take care of the ones that were there, I had read where you can take the liquid bandage (the one I bought is called New Skin). Anyway, you dab it on the skin tag and keep putting it on there for about a week and they fall right off. It smells like strong fingernail polish. But if you haven't ever used it before, it's to protect a cut or blister without having to put a band-aid on it. But it really works well for skin tags too. Hope this helps.

It's caused by carbs!! I know you probably think I am crazzy but...
I have PCOS and that's one of the things I have to watch is NOT too eat too many carbs for them to come back.
I am also insulin resistant. If your scared to take them off yourself, any health spa offers that service too. The price is about 50 dollars. They have some really great articles about skintabs at SoulCysters.com: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) Treatment & Resources
Hope that helps, they are anoying as HELL!!

I was just going to post something similar. They can be linked to insulin resistance, diabetes, PCOS and a number of other issues. Especially those skin tags around the neck, arm pit area, and trunk.

Be careful if you remove them yourself, in case of infection.

I've been saying for years that I have PCOS and was basically blown off by my docs. I started going to a dermatologist for some other issues-hair loss, skin tags, etc and he dx'd me with PCOS. I'm also a relatively new diabetic-DX'd 3-31-06.

Yes, I was going to add that also in my post above, my dr. says they are part of the insulin resistance/glucose intolerance thing, which I have but I also have PCOS too!

Is that something you can buy yourself or do only doctors have access to "freezing cold air"?

I have skin tags that drive me crazy. I went to a dermatologist and she removed about 5-6 but it was so painful that I was not able to have all of mine removed

My husband has them. We were swimming in a pond and a fish bit one off! I thought it was funny, he didn't, but it was gone!

I have used the liquid bandage stuff and after a week, they do dry up and fall off. You can also use duct tape for a few days and that works. Of course, you just can't use it then in places that people will see it. :-) It doesn't hurt at all to use the liquid stuff. The duct tape only hurts when you pull it off, but you just use a little piece.

My niece took her 12 yr old son to a dermatologist because he had a couple on his face.

She was told to put AloeVera gel on them. it worked for him.
It is only $2 at family dollar.

Do you just apply the liquid bandage once and let it alone for a week, or do you keep applying it every day?

Thanks.

I have a bottle, and it doesn't say that anywhere on the bottle. I'm going out in a bit, I'm going to see if it says on the box.

For those of you that used Compound W:

Did you have any stinging at first?

I just put some on a few on my neck and it was fine at first, then after about a minute it started to sting/burn. I'd say about 2-3 minutes have past and it's just about gone...but did that happen to anyone else?

TIA.

ETA - just looked in the mirror...while it's no longer burning, the skin in the area around the applications are a bit pink.

I just re-read the bottle warnings and there are no mentions of skin tags. The closest thing they mention is birthmarks and moles.

skin tags

For the small ones I just cut with clean manicuring scizzors. Only hurts for a second. I have removed larger ones by putting ice on till numb, twisting and pinching at base with fingernails till smaller, then cutting off with manicuring scizzors. Hurts for a minute, but if you put ice on it stops and mine rarely bleed long. They drive me crazy when I have them, especially under bra line or under the armpits. UUggghhhh.

I forgot to look at a box of Compound W when I was out.

My husband has a small bottle of that "Skin Shield" - the liquid bandage type thing. I might try using that next.

I'm still hoping someone that uses Compound W will tell if it stung a bit for them or if there was any pink/redness.
