Hiya everyone I'm pooped. We've done all the home remedies.. swaddling, bouncing , swinging, vacuum. music, vibrations - just about everything. Husband is gone 2 1/2 weeks a month. I have 2 other boys, cooking, cleaning, running.. you know the drill. I need a little break. Has anyone tried the Amby bed? any other suggestions?

There were these drops that our pediatrician recommended for DS they ar available over the counter, I think its Mylicon drops you put them in the babys formula and it should help. Also she said if that didnt work there was an old spanish remedy anaise seeds, I dont know how to do it though its been almost 9 yrs. Nutramigen is what worked with us along with the Mylicon drops and lots of driving in the car. Good luck I feel for you

It would be worth trying the very affordable Nestle Good Start Formula ... try the milk-based one first and then if that doesn't work, try the soy-based -- it worked for my colicky babies as well as every other colicky baby that I have recommended it for. I also spent a lot of time with the babies in the 'colic carry' that BeachRatz describes, rubbing their tummies gently with my fingers until the expelled gas, laying them on their backs and then scrunching their legs into their belly until they expelled gas, and/or laying them on their tummies over my legs while sitting on the couch and rubbing their backs. Some sort of pressure on the tummy is the key... Best wishes... that makes life so difficult for everyone when the baby is unhappy. You will be in my thoughts! |

Oh boy, you just brought back lots of bad memories for me. Our DD was diagnosed with acid reflux at about 1 month and was sent to a specialist. She would projectile vomit, she cried for about 2 months straight until we got her medication adjusted to where it actually helped, she was on RX Prilosec and Mylanta at 2 months that's how bad it was. I would call DH at work and tell him you HAVE to come home, I can't do it anymore. I couldn't even imagine if there was no one to call, so I can really understand what you are going through. Has the baby actually been diagnosed with acid reflux? Here's what helped us: Erica slept in her carseat until she was old enough to crawl out. I would feed her for the night and then put her in and with a fan on and swaddled, she would be fine all night long (yes she did sleep through the night from the beginning but I think it was only because she tired herself out by crying all day). DON't put rice in the bottle, it actaully can make things worse, don't know if you tried it but don't bother. The swing made things even worse for us, so I never used it. Keep the baby sitting upright as much as possible, don't even recline if you don't have to, let gravity do it's thing. For the whole second month of her life, I would take her and DS who was not even 2 at the time out in the car every afternoon and go to the McDonalds for lunch about an hour away. It wasted the day, Erica slept for the whole trip and my poor son got to spend time with me without all of the screaming. My philosophy was to do whatever it took to get you through the day, deal with the habits or consequenses later. It was the worst year of my life and I will never forget it. No one in my family or DH's ever offered to help, I was so alone. Do you have help? Where in PA are you? You can PM me if you need to talk.

DD, now 14, at about 10 days started having what I thought was colic. I had two doctors tell me I didn't know what I was talking about, however, she wasn't tolerating the vitamin drops. I was breast feeding and couldn't figure out what was causing the problem. For 3 days, I gave her the vitamins at a different time each day. From the point of being given the vitamins, she would then be fussy and crying off and on for 6-8 hours. Not much sleeping going on either. The swing soothed her as did the colic carry that was described above. I tried morning, noon and early evening. Nothing changed and I quit the vitamin drops. All was well after that. I hadn't agreed with giving a breast fed baby vitamins anyway. The problem didn't start until about 10 days because we were in the hospital for a week taking anitbiotics for a possible infection and jaundice.

Iron supplement is very hard on baby's tummy. If it is anything like the way that my own tummy felt when I took those prenatal vitamins, then I feel very sorry for babies. ![]() We called the 'colic carry' the 'football hold' (with the baby being the football!). LOL. |

HMmmm Okay - I guess I forgot to add (I really am tired), he is allergic to milk like my other boys. My oldest had reflux/colic and it was very bad. My second had it but not so bad. He also had a problem with soy. BUT did so well on the Good Start basic (yellow duckie) I don't know why it worked but it did. This little guy is the worst. We are doing nutramigen right now with medication for the reflux. When he was on soy he got horribly constipated with the med. We're talking rock hard and horrible screaming. So the dr moved us to the nutramigen. The regular milk based formula had us going through 1 pack of diapers in 2 days - it was basically colored water. What I'm thinking is maybe we can try him on the soy again without the med for reflux. He did do much better on the soy, the crying /screaming wasn't half as bad. Maybe the reflux won't be so bad ... as long as he can keep most of it down. We do the colic carry - remembered it from my oldest. He does do well on his belly - but ends up puking and getting it all over himself. By the time I'm done cleaning him up, he's back to very upset again. I put him on his belly and pat/rub his bottom. We do the car seat sleeping, sometimes the bouncer. The swing works maybe 10% of the time. He does prefer to sleep on our chests and we do that, except on the extremely wiped out days for fear of letting him fall off, even though I stack up pillows around me. But if I have to get up for any reason, he wakes and it starts all over again. We do use gas drops - relief is temp. Never put rice or anything like that in his bottle..no cereals etc. So, I'm thinking of buying the Tucker Sling/Wedge too...anyone have that? Also, no family available to help. His side is in ID, mine in NJ and either going through a rough time and/or not willing to help out. Grandma is willing to buy toys/clothes and mail them but not willing to take care of them. Sorry this is long and probably all over the place, baby is fussy, Jonah is getting tired and whining and Jakob is agitating him to no end. Thanks soooooooooo much!

I don't know if you've read the Baby Whisperer books, but she has a website with a colic/reflux forum that was a lifesaver when I was going through it. Colic, Reflux, & Crying

What reflux med is he on? At least one of them has milk in it. My kids both had reflux (one wasn't on meds, one was) and both slept in their car seats. Are you keeping the baby upright after eating? That was another the dr told us. If he's nothing is working then you may want to have a GI (Gastroenterology) doctor look at him. It might be more than just a milk allergy and reflux. Been there, still working on that.

AHHHHHHH! I feel for you! My ods had colic for 9 months. He didn't sleep throught the night until he was over a year. When dh held him he cried harder so needless to say dh didn't ever want to hold him since he thought he was doing something wrong. I wish I knew what I know now. I believe my ods was allergic to milk since I am. I don't know why it wasn't ever suggested to use soy but that is what I use with Spencer my yds. I tried to bf but he was so fussy. I ended up switching to soy formula. What a changed little baby when I gave Spencer soy. So much better. I know that soy sometimes does constipation but we haven't had that problem. The one time he was a little bit of constipated I gave him some prune juice...just a little and that cleared it right up. I would definately go back to soy if you a saw some relief and maybe give him some prunes/or prune juice. Also they have these colic tablets made by Hylands that you might want to try. Some people swear by them. Didn't know about them 10 yrs ago but I do use the teething tablets and they work great. Also the vaccuum cleaner used to be my LO best friend. I could put him in the swing and turn on the vaccuum cleaner and I could get a little bit of a break (since your LO doesn't like the swing maybe a bouncy chair or carseat). I totally feel for you. Lots of hugs thrown your way. If you lived closer I would be willing to give you a break. I was lucky I had a stepdad that would come on his split (he drove a bus so worked weird hours) and take Brandon from me. Brandon would cry the whole time but he didn't care because he knew I needed a break. What a guy! Good luck! I hope you can find something that works.

mycology, Does your baby like eating? Does he get fussy when he eats? I'm a speech pathologist and we sometimes work with colicy babies who have difficulties with feeding and reflux. There are some things you can do to make the reflux better through positioning and altering the formula consistency. Feel free to email me. |

Ok, I am about eight weeks out from a colickly baby, my dd is now five months. It was awful, every night at 8:00. We tried everything. I finally decided to eliminate dairy from my diet, I am breastfeeding. No butter, cheese, ice cream, milk. It stopped immediately, I mean the next day it was gone. Then about 1 1/2 weeks later I ate some dip with cream cheese in it, not thinking, and she had colic again that night (or the next, I don't remember). I gradually added dairy back in once she turned four months and it never happened again. I don't know if it was a coindindence (sp) or what, but it was wonderful. Other than that we did the mylicon drops, walking, rocking, laying down on tummy across my lap, rubbing tummy. She also went on Zantac after the colic stopped for reflux, she was doing this projectile spitting up through her nose and it was so painful for her. The Zantac has worked great.

No one has mentioned this, and I don't know if you're a believer or not, but if you're tired enough of the crying you'll try anything. I did. Chiropractors can do wonders to relieve colic and gas pains. Also reflux. They are trained to do gentle adjustments on infants. Infants go through huge trama trying to squeeze through the birth canal to come into the world. It makes sense that they will put pressure on nerves in the back and spine, hense causing difficulties with digestion. Try it a couple of adjustments with a qualified Chiropractor. It can't hurt, might help and insurance should pay. You've probably hit deductible ..Ha Ha. Most probably major med max. Should pay the whole thing. You might even consider getting an adjustment yourself since giving birth puts a lot of twists and turns on your spine too!! Hope you get relief soon. I remember it all too well. Not fun but it really does pass and you're not the only one who has had to deal with it. We are feeling your pain. Good luck and let us know what works for you.
