Question Bank Overdraft Problem Help Please

I got three overdraft fees this week from my bank
I believe it only should have been one
I went to Mcdonalds and krogers thursday and used my debit card and it went through, I seen It on my account online when I got home i had the funds and they both had already been taken out
by the next morning my rent check had cleared
so they decided to do the largest transaction out first (just another way to get money i believe)
and then put my other two charges back through and charged 33 for each plus the rent check for 99 in overdraft fees i was nautious

Is that Legal?
How can the tamper with my account when something is already spent and cleared
I hope that makes sense
I am really mad
very fruistrating
Is there anything I can do about this?
Thanks for any help

Calmly call or go to the bank and ask them to explain to you why they did what they did.

Banks will do this, as you suggest, to be able to charge the most in fees. The amount of money that fees generate for the bank is tremendous-you would be surprised what the actual percentage of their total income is from fees.

I would do as above OP stated and either go in (the best option since it is harder for them to be totally unswayed when looking you straight in the face/eyes) or call and see if they will do adjustments. It is definitely worth the try.
Good luck

When you use your debit card the transactions are "pending" usually for 24-48 hours until the bank receives notification of the exact amount of the transaction. When your rent check came through it probably came through before your debit card transactions had truly "posted" to your account. Unfortunately it is common practice if multiple items are presented at the same time the largest one clears the account first.

Most financials will work with you on overdraft fees especially if you are a long term customer and have other accounts at the same bank. It is common for them to split fees if you ask in a professional way.
They don't normally want to lose you as a customer.

I agree with the above poster, overdraft fees is a huge non-interest income to a bank.

I haven't had it happen but I would call the bank and speak with your personal banker (if you have one). If it's the first time, they will usually credit you back. I like my bank (Key Bank). I have a personal banker and he has been VERY nice to us...not just a number

our credit union sees overdraft fees as a convenience for it's members...lol can you believe that?
heres the logic:
you bounce a check but rather than bouncing it back to the payee they cover it for you and charge you an overdraft charge of $25 (credit union rate) so you don't have to deal with the embarassment (they use the word hassle) of re-paying your payee and paying their returned check fee plus any late fees incurred. I can sort of see the "logic" but it's stupid for them to charge $25 for you to use a debit card at McDonald's when the total was less than $5 and they could have easily declined the transaction vs. letting it go through! Granted I would also rather have them cover my "rent" check (or something as important) than deal with the threat of eviction or embarrassment of having to pay the bill again, you know?
I agree with the other posters, but I would personally go down to your bank and plead your case. My husband has a seperate "fun" account and he went under and they charged him $90 in fees (Chase...three transactions...all less than $20 a transaction) anyway, I told him to "just ask" the worst they can do is say no...they removed two of the overdraft fees and told him they can only do it once a year...
Now, the only reason I know about our credit union's view on overdraft fees is because October 2006, our mortgage company tried to take our mortgage out of our savings account when all our money was in the checking account. The credit union dinged us three times and I called, raised hell, and they said too bad so sad get the money back from your mortgage company since it was their mistake (we did) it turns out everyone that paid online that paid from a credit union also had this problem. The mortgage company took a huge hit that month lol!! The irony is now, every month we get a call from the mortgage company asking for our mortgage payment and I very nicely explain to them it's not our fault and we have NEVER been late or have bounced a check with them so they are wasting valuable resources on good paying customers when they could be out chasing the people who are not good paying customers. But hey, if they want to spend "the interest" on people manning the phones at a call center just so I don't have to log online and put in my bank account number, it's their perogative!
Good luck op...just remember don't loose your cool and if you do call and don't get anywhere with a teller, ask to speak with a manager...remember the worst they can do is say no!

I did this one time. Thought I had money, did a 97˘ paypal for coupons and it bounced...ended up paying $35.97 for those coupons. I cried for a week. My BF at the time had taken all our money out of the bank without me knowing and did a one day drug spree...needless to say he was outta here.

The same thing has happen to me where they take out the largest amount first after my debit had been posted. I called and told them that it had to be illegal for them to do so and they no, it wasn't. After going round and round about it, they finally took one of the overdraft fees away and made me pay one. If you call, they should work with you. They told me that they would do that once a year. I haven't done it in three years but have come close. Hope all goes well for you.

Once you get this straight -- get over draught from your savings - so that you don't have to ever deal with this again.

I once overdrafted by 15 cents and was charged 35.00! I was so upset. The bank said Too-bad.

My hubby ordered new checks a couple of weeks ago. He made sure our name was right on the checks when we got them but failed to look at the account number. When I went to cash one of the checks at the bank the following morning, they said the bank account number was wrong. I would be responsible for any checks that didnt' go through. Thank goodness he had only written two checks, One to him, one to me, one to my neighbor for grass cutting and one to the school for lunches. I hunted them all down before everyone had a chance to cash them or that would have been a whopping overdraft!!! Lesson learned from now on with us.

Linking your savings account as overdraft is great idea if you have a savings account. If not you can link your credit card as OD(bank issued). I worked 8 years for Wells Fargo and we tried to get everybody to link their cards. OD fees were $39 - $42 and if you linked your card they would just charge you a transfer fee(which I think was $7)... May want to check it out. Think of it as insurance(you may never need it but nice to have if you ever do).

You asked if there is anything you can do about this. The real lesson here is not to make this out to be the bank's fault, but the account holder. I can't coment on the overdraft policy of any institution, but it should have been given to you when opening the account. I bounced 1 check back in 1990 .....never before, never again. Never, not for Mc Donalds, not for Kmart, etc. never.

My (stupid) son uses his atm all the time but doesn't write it down like he should. He goes by the receipts which you can't go by. He thought he had plenty of money because it kept letting him use his atm card and it showed he still had money. When he finally checked on line a few days later he found he went over on his account by $65. The biggest problem was that they were 10 small transactions so the fee was $350. If you don't have $65 how do they thing you will have $350. LOL I understand that the bank has fees, but doesn't this seem wrong. $35 each no mater the amount. My husband said that the Mafia is alive and well in the banking industry. LOL My son asked if I would call the bank and they offered him a one time credit of $100. I was hoping for 1/2 but that was sure better then nothing. At least that left enough from his new check to pay his bills. Call and ask you bank for a one time credit. It never hurts to ask.

How are several overdrafts the bank's problem or responsibility and why should the bank be expected to take off some of the fees?

Sometimes banks do this as a one-time courtesy to their customers who have never had an overdraft before. A few years ago, I forgot to make a deposit into my checking account and ended up bouncing three checks. I was a long-time customer, and this had never happened to me before. They very graciously removed the fees after I went to the bank to discuss the overdrafts in person. Needless to say, I haven't made this mistake again (but never say never!)

Because the fees are outrageous. $35 for a $1,000 transaction doesn't sound bad. But $35 for 97 cents or other small amounts come on. Or in my son's case $350 for $65 worth of transactions. It was his fault, but those fees are ridiculous.

That wasn't an answer. The fees are there for a reason, $35 is $35, an overdraft is an overdraft. Regardless of the amount, the bank is still consumed with expense regarding an overdraft.
