Major computer virus issues

Never had this issue until recently. I have Norton anti- virus. For some reason now, I am getting viruses and trojans everyday. My start up page was reset to Google, along with the rest of my family. I have new icons on my desktop for a casino site and online dating site. ( I know what you're thinking, but unless I am in extreme denial, no one here is accessing these type of sites) I keep getting pop-ups for some time of bogus virus protection. Now my computer is trying to send out hundreds of emails . I scanned my computer with my Norton this am and it found and supposedly got rid of a trojan, but now it is doing it again. What should I be doing to cure this????
Adding that when I try to get into 'set program access and defaults' it tells me this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer/ contact your system administrator. And my printer will not work.

1 word of advice...get rid of Norton's!!
With my old computer, everytime I took my pc there to get repaired, upgraded, whatever, there was always a virus in my computer. He told me Norton's was good back in the day, and the last few years they went majorly downhill.
Just got a pc built by him back in February, and I have Panda Internet Security 2007 (they have 2008 out now). While it's a little pricey, it is so worth it. 1 program for everything. All i will have to pay for renewal is $40, since I will get it from him.Panda Internet Security 2008. Antivirus, Anti-spyware and anti-spam. Panda Security

And so far, not a single critter has gotten into my pc.

AVG Free Advisor - AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

This is my favourite antivirus software, ands the price is right, too. Ad-Aware 2007 - Reviews and free downloads at Download.com is another good malware scan. Download the software, unplug your internet, and then scan. Your computer's got something open that the viruses are coming in through, but if you're offline, nothing can touch your computer that's not already on it.

There are a few free online virus scans that you can try also. I have AVG, but run a different program every so often...just to double check.

One is: Trend Micro HouseCall - Free Online Virus and Spyware Scan

Another one is: Free online antivirus. Download ActiveScan and clean your PC. Panda Security

I prefer the first one (housecall). I had to dump Norton antivirus (came free with my comcast internet) because I was constantly having problems. I have a lot less problems since using AVG, but every once in while, I will get a virus and AVG can't get rid of it. I have found that the "housecall" virus scan gets rid of most stuff.

Run trend micros free housecall.
Do a system restore back to a time when it was running right.
I have been told that when you are deleting viruses, you need to shut off system restore while you do it.
Also,no matter what anti virus,or anti spyware, malware you are using make sure it is always updated

You don't actually have a virus, your browser has been hijacked. (been there) Read the forum and follow the instructions. Post results and they'll tell you exactly what to do.

I think my browser has been hijacked in addition to my virus. I have 'win32.Trojandownlaoder.Ag' It will not budge- I have tried several removers that can't take it out. But at least now I know what it is, as my Norton didn't even detect it.t
Reading on the varous sites you have given me, this is one mean virus. It will not allow me to add/delete programs, or to restore my computer to a pre-infection status, so far the fixes i have read about I am not able to accomplish. My printer will not work, and I cannot re-install. Very frustrating. I am looking into getting a housecall from a 'geek'.

If you know where the file is you can use Unlocker 1.8.5 to delete it. Its only 191Kb.After installing it,just right click on the file you want to delete and choose Unlocker. From there you will be able to Unlock the file so you can delete it.This is my favorite utility, with this you can delete ANYTHING and nothing can stop you.

Can you use safe mode to get into your computer, and try to remove it?

Quote:
Safe mode in Microsoft Windows is accessed by repeatedly pressing the "F8" key as the operating system boots (Microsoft's official website for Windows XP simply advises users to press "F8" once,[1] but in practice the exact moment at which to press the key can vary from computer to computer, so it is better to repeatedly press the key at one second intervals).
(that'd be from Wikipedia)

Thanks again for all the advice. I tried a variety of things (like safe mode) without luck. I called in a computer geek for a housecall today. He has never seen anything like this virus and what it has done to my computer. My computer is basically now a zombie- someone took it over. He has to take my tower and reformat. He was going to take it today, but we decided to wait one week and have it done while we are on vacation. Will cost $150 including housecalls/pick-up/ re-delivery. He said I should carefully moniter my credit cards that I have transacted with online. I am really worried about that.

I had either the same or a similar virus and my brother is a computer guru so I called him and we went through everything and couldn't get it to go byebye, he said he never saw anything like it. I use McAfee and it went around that.

What finally worked was SUPERAntiSpyware.com - AntiAdware, AntiSpyware, AntiMalware! it was free and it did get rid of the nasty homepage stealing, click on this link to get antiviral protection, continuous pop up MONSTER.

Reformatting your computer is the BEST way to rid yourself of any virus. For the most part you should be safe with security on your windows firewall, your modem firewall & hopefully you will still run Norton & perhaps scan from week to week with adaware as well as do frequent maintenance on your pc like defrag & disk cleanup, delete cookies & temp. internet files.
