I am not Jewish and know nothing about the Jewish background. Have your children ever been invited to a Bar Mitzvah? How long does the ceremony and reception usually last. What is the best gift to give. I don't know the family and have never met the boy. Thank you.

The number 18 represents Chai ('Life") - so money gifts are usually given in increments of 18 ($18; $36, etc.) however, you do not have to give money - gift cards are very popular (to Gamestop, Blockbuster, Barnes & Noble, etc) the service is in the morning - the invitation will say what time the service starts - there is usually a luncheon after the service; at my congregation, services begin at 9:30 and end about 12:15 then lunch is usually over about 1:00 - each congregation is a little different) there is also usually an evening party.

I am assuming your child has been invited. I have nothing to add...other than my two cents How exciting for your child to experience something from another culture/religion
